  1. They are built for October if that means their strength is watching football and going trick-or-treating. I do have to hand it to the team for staying in the race despite injuries, bullpen blowups, lousy base-running and situational hitting. In large part that is due to having a weak division this year. If they get these injured players back - will they immediately step in and perform or by the time they get acclimated back will the season be over? Or will they get re-injured or suffer new injuries? The one constant with the team is having a revolving crew of injured players. Make no mistake - I will be rooting for the team to get hot and take the division title but the team is going to have to step up and play much better than we have seen in a while. As for if we make October - we are not playing sound fundamental baseball and we don't have a big enough talent advantage to overcome that which would likely lead to a quick playoff exit.
  2. Correa has been solid this year and glad we signed him but not worth the $35M. Certainly he can produce better next year if he opts to stay here but I think someone will give him the $35M for 10 years he is looking for in the open market and he will get paid if he opts out. He could stay here if we offer him that deal but not suggesting that the Twins should or would do that. I viewed the signing as a one year deal and I planned on enjoying watching him play for us this year.
  3. To be fair Buxton gets hurt every year so I am not sure that shutting him down for this season would be a benefit. If there is a good chance that continuing to play would cause a knee injury which would shelve him for all next year then I am for shutting him down. It could be a 10 day rest is sufficient to get him back on the field - and given our current set of outfielders we need him playing as long as we have a reasonable shot at the playoffs. Of course, given the way we are currently playing and Cleveland is playing that shot may be over in 10 days.
  4. We had our best pitcher and a well-rested bullpen and the lead in this game against a Dodger fill-in starter and still lost by 3 runs. Disappointing series to say the least. The way Kepler is swinging he can't be batting clean-up. Let's see if we can do anything against the Angels.
  5. Thanks for this article - it supports the eye test from watching games this year. If we are not the worst base-running team we are certainly in the discussion. It also helps explain why we have a boom or bust offense. The sprint speed stats were interesting as well.
  6. I think with the current minor injury situations with Buxton and Kepler I would have kept Celestino and sent down Garlick - just to have a better defensive option in the outfield for this week's games. Certainly hope Sano comes out hitting hot but my expectations are tempered.
  7. Assuming the $750K offer hinged on him starting now - the offer would not be available at the end of our season which is the reason Wes is leaving in the middle of the season. Stinks as a fan of the Twins but not sure how many of us would turn down that substantial a raise for doing a relatively similar job.
  8. You know you are in trouble hitting-wise when we are rotating DH'ing our catchers who combined are hitting below .200 and are slow as molasses on the basepaths. Sanchez I can maybe see as a DH but Jeffers should never be the DH. Garlick in the 4 hole is another gem. FO did not bring in enough depth this offseason. I have mentioned this before so don't want to beat a dead horse but we also move players all over the lineup card each game which I think hurts any consistent production. Looking at the opposing teams lineups we have played this season - they like to stick to a pretty consistent order. So there is plenty of blame to go around - players, managers and FO .
  9. Well, something to look forward to - another bullpen arm potential bust. Let me ask a question - Is there a bullpen arm we have that is not a potential bust? Hopefully he channels some suggested changes and pieces together a nice season for the Twins this year and he can move on and be a bust for the White Sox next season.
  10. That was a game we should have won - certainly if expect to be a .500 team and possible playoff contender. Their starting pitcher was not good but their bullpen had no trouble shutting us down. Wondering if the fact that our lineup and bullpen usage is so scattered has an impact on this team of humans. Maybe a computer model suggests all these different lineups and bullpen usage should work best but humans like some more certainty to perform better. One more thing I will say is that we had a full offseason to improve our backup OF positions and bullpen but it looks no different than last year. 2 injured players who were also injured last year by the way and we are left without adequate replacements. For me - no more Garlick - I would have preferred to keep Gordon in the game - at least he has speed. I don't get our affinity with slow plodding outfielders.
  11. Can we trade Kirilloff's injured wrist for Sano's good wrist and then send Sano down for a rehab assignment until June while Kirilloff takes over first base? it's still early - I would keep Sano in the lineup for at least the rest of this month but start planning for a possible replacement. This is really Sano's prove it year - he came in better shape - we have to hope something connects like the bat with the ball.
  12. I heard PETB - People for Ethical treatment of Bats has filed a complaint against Sano for breaking his bat. In a statement released by PETB "It was not the bats fault Sano can't swing and make contact and stood looking at strike 3 down the middle of the plate. There was no excuse and we are shocked and horrified for such a violent treatment against an innocent bat. Bats have feelings too."
  13. I was pretty much enjoying the season - outside of Duffey's blown save - until the 8th inning last night. Now I am having flashbacks to the 2021 Minnesota Twins. At least Shoemaker and Happ are no longer in our rotation. Here's hoping to brighter days ahead!
  14. I will go with a C-/D+ with the grade saved by the Correa signing (perhaps only for one year) and the Sonny Gray trade. We did not sign one of the many top SP arms in Free Agency or pick up a top tier reliever. We still have and even added to the glut of position players who are best served as DH's - Sano, Sanchez, Arraez, Larnach, Rooker. We greatly weakened the Catcher position and did not address an OF platoon option that would allow Kepler to sit against LHP.
  15. Wow! Correa was my dream choice for FA signing but never thought we could pull that off. Kudos to the FO for pulling it off. Our right-side of the infield suddenly looks tons better with Correa and Urshela.
  16. I will cheer for anyone in a Twins Uni but Gary Sanchez will really put that to a test. Realize all the moves are not done yet so I will put that caveat out there - but if you took all of our offseason blueprints and compared to where we stand today - I don't think anyone would have submitted this blueprint. Realize we have plenty of dollars in the budget to spend but we are running out of players to spend it on.
  17. Personally I would rather not overpay for Story in $ or years - I just don't see him as a Franchise type player to be the face of the franchise with a big contract. Since we have payroll flexibility I would rather see us swallow a bad 1 or 2 year contract in return for getting some additional players with longer term value and not surrendering any of our top prospects. Looking like this year is about player development and evaluation and maybe we can make a better push next year.
  18. Generally an optimistic person but well I don't know what to think now - had the 24 hours of picturing Kiner-Falefa playing SS for us. Hopefully we find a SS. Also hoping Urshela performs but really would prefer not to see Sanchez play for the Twins but I guess we need someone to split catching duties with Jeffers.
  19. Sorry to see Garver go, but this certainly does fill a gap we needed and keeps Polanco at 2B. Of course signing Story would have done the same thing and we would have kept Garver. Not sure what we will spend our remaining budget on. looks like we will be finishing in the draft lottery territory for 2023. One more thing on the trade, I live down here in Texas Ranger land and Kiner-Falefa was a fan favorite - plays with some fire something I think the team was lacking in last year - not sure that translates into any more wins but maybe more enjoyable to watch.
  20. May not be 50/50, but I will blame both parties for not reaching a labor agreement. Solutions presented don't even really address pay versus performance inequities and the games themselves becoming less interesting to watch. I won't waste any more time discussing that subject - if they play I will watch if not I'll find something else to do. As long as the regular season is delayed/postponed/cancelled we can replace the cancelled games with game by game reviews of either the 1987 or 1991 seasons - instead of actual game #1 this year we replace with review of Game #1 of 1991 for example. At least that way we are guaranteed to win the World Series at the end of the season ?
  21. Thanks for the article - I have no recollection of Walter Bond - that was before my baseball following time. I don't remember Herman Hill playing either although I just double-checked and I have the baseball card of Herman that is shown in the article. Didn't realize he had died down in Venezuela. Bostock, I do remember and what a great hitter he was for the Twins. Was sorry to see him go to the Angels but then we would not pay much for players back then so it was not surprising. Sorry that all these men died so young.
  22. He will fit right in with many of our other players who struggle making consistent contact with the ball both at the plate and in the field. I was actually hoping for the opposite - a RH hitting outfielder who can make contact, hit lefties and can field so they could mix and match with Kepler. Someone like the first-half season Refsnyder.
  23. On the owners side if they are not up for more of a revenue sharing plan then I would think they could lower the salary cap (while increasing penalties for going over) and raise the floor to lower the spending gap between teams. My suggestion on the player side would be a funding tax based on each teams payroll there the proceeds would be disbursed each year to the players that are outperforming their salary to help prop up the younger players earnings until they can get to free agency. The NFL has a smaller version of this. Using the current structure and if the players under the union proposal can reach free agency faster this is only going to help the large spending teams get the best players in more of their prime years so there needs to be a more broad solution.
  24. Tender them all - none are outrageous and we need to keep and amass as much talent as possible.
  25. This is wonderful news to hear - kudos to Buxton for signing this deal and the Twins for getting it done. Since both signings were announced today would you rather have Buxton signing for 7 years and $100M (plus incentives) for his age 28-34 seasons or Marcus Simien signing for 7 years and $175M at his age 31-37 seasons?
