  1. An outfielder who can hit and field? No we try to get rid of those types. We prefer them to only have one of those skills or neither as long as they are cheap we are good. Joking of course - yes we could use a right-hand hitting outfielder who can field but not sure we would allocate a portion of our budget for that. Would open the possibility of trading some of our other outfielders for pitching.
  2. He would not be my first choice or 2nd - but I can see it happening and I would not hate it. First try to sign one of the big guys (for me Correa would be my choice) then when that likely will fail - try for Galvis or Iglesias on a short-term deal. If that doesn't work out then Simmons. I know he made some head-scratching plays on defense but he also made difficult plays look easy and is our best defensive option. If he comes back you have to hope his hitting picks up and if not DFA him or trade him and trial some of our other young candidates who hopefully one of them will step up next year. His hitting was frustrating last year - could not even bunt well.
  3. A nice thought provoking proposal. I am a little concerned with the hit to the defense by losing Donaldson and Buxton and Baez is probably not that good either. I might take the Baez money and sign a cheaper better defensive SS and flow the rest of the dollars to the bullpen and OF. I don't want to count on Larnach and Rooker as OF options next year - let them get some more AAA time. Also want to sit Kepler against lefties as well so need to roster an outfielder that can play CF and hit lefties - like Buxton - lol! I would keep him. In the bullpen maybe keep Rogers and add Iglesias
  4. I feel it was the correct decision to let Eddie go for this season at what it would have cost and with Kirilloff, Larnach and Arraez to try in the OF which makes it that much easier to root for his success in the postseason this year. No bitterness. It is always entertaining to watch him play, the good and the bad but now the bad doesn't hurt as much and the good is enjoyable.
  5. I was rooting for Tampa Bay and San Francisco to go to the World Series so going to be tough to watch either of these series. The story in the AL - who can cheat better? Boston somehow plays "clutch" when Cora is managing and Baker always seems to have tough defeats in the playoffs so I will go with Boston winning in 7 although Houston should be favored. NLCS Atlanta vs LA Dodgers - another tough one to pick a team to root for as both teams have been in the playoffs a bunch. Atlanta has Eddie Rosario so I'll root for them although the Dodgers should be heavily favored and always seems to beat Atl. Dodgers in 5 seems about right.
  6. Excited to see what Celestino can do next year. He was quite awful when brought up this year on both offense and defense fully considering the jump he made but I was encouraged how he performed in in AAA. I definately want to keep Buxton and I also favor keeping a good fielder with speed as the 4th OF over a plodding OF slugger that has difficulty making contact such as Rooker. It seems we could also use a RH platoon for Kepler - don't know how Celestino hits lefties. I should clarify that I feel the Twins could use an outfielder that can field well to backup all OF positions and hit lefties to spell Kepler and am hoping Celestino progresses to that role next year. Fine if he starts in AAA and earns his way up. Want to make sure he gets enough at-bats so he can continue to develop.
  7. As bad as Monday nights game was - this one was wonderful to watch. Nice to see Jax come through with a good game and the bullpen also delivered. Kudos to Astudillo for the home run and nice defensive play. I thought it was a bit strange to pinch-hit for him in the 8th - I guess Polanco was coming in for defense anyway and prefer to have him hit than Astudillo - even after he homered and just made a nice defensive play? But after Polanco singled then Kepler came up facing the lefty and struck out so I guess we were hoping Polanco would have homered? Could have let Astudillo hit and have Polanco hit for Kepler if Astudillo got on which would have necessitated putting Larnach in the OF in the 9th weakening the OF defense.
  8. Bullpen blowing a 9th inning lead 2 nights in a row is such a 2021 Twins move. Both unbelievable but very believable at the same time At this point Robles and Colome just need to be let go and give some tryouts to prospects. I was also frustrated by the 10th inning at-bats of Kepler and Sano. Sano was swinging to hit a grand slam when all we needed was a soft single. Is anyone counseling the players on strategy or are they just not listening? In either case that is an issue that needs to be corrected. I also would have kept Gordon in the game rather than pinch-hitting Larnach - although both are struggling of late Gordon can make something happen with his speed.
  9. Great pitching effort by Berrios - he did have the 2 walks in the 2nd but was not helped by the defense. The Jeffers error should have been charged to Simmons - Jeffers threw the ball to Simmons and I think Simmons thought he was playing soccer and couldn't use his hands. This game just continue the story of the season, untimely errors on defense, no clutch hitting - especially in the 2nd when we could have answered those 2 runs and in the 6th inning when we were gifted a couple of hits but struck out again stranding runners. Then the cherry on top is bringing Colome in and he gives up 2 runs with the help of another Simmons error. First pitch from Colome was a fat slow strike that was tagged for a double.
  10. I can see him potentially as a 4th outfielder/platoon ie upgrade over Cave. With our current OF situation he is our best defender outside of Buxton which has value.
  11. Excellent data points and reinforces what we think we have seen this year. The high-leverage stats also mirrors our performance in playoff games. A question I don't know if we can answer but do we have issues of clenching up in high-leverage situations or is it the fact maybe we keep the same approach no matter the situation and the opposition is sharper in those critical situations and we are just not adjusting.
  12. Wow, Gibson-Long and German combined to strikeout 19 St. Lucie batters. Thanks as always for these updates - they provide a nice alternative from focusing on the parent club's performance.
  13. Pineda has been very consistent when he has pitched - the one issue I have is that he has had a hard time completing a full season either due to injury or suspension. He is not getting any younger either. He would probably be a fairly valuable trade asset come deadline time as the acquiring team knows he only has to last a couple of months with them and he will give them a solid consistent performance. To me if we get a valuable offer we have to trade him. This assumes his forearm stiffness is nothing and goes away. I would not object to keep him if either he signed a team-friendly 2 yr contract at about the same level he is now and we do not get a valuable trade offer for him. Next year in the rotation we have Maeda, Berrios and maybe Dobnak plus bringing up a rookie or two and and/or signing another FA so I don't think re-signing or extending him squeezes anyone out. We will still need arms to let the prospects develop.
  14. I am particularly enjoying Refsnyder's surprise showing. Realize that is going against his track record, but he is taking quality at-bats and playing solid defense. Not meaning to throw Cave under the bus and I know he is out hurt but I would rather see Refsnyder as the backup outfielder over him since he hits right and we have a lot of left-hand bats in the OF.
  15. I have seen them play enough bad baseball this year to attribute very little if any of their futility to bad luck. Losing has been a team effort - one part of the team will always fail at a key moment - if it is not the Starting Pitching, then the Bullpen blows a lead, if the bullpen pitches well, then the defense caves in, if not that then the offense stagnates. Sometimes everything falters. Also consistently not delivering with men in scoring position - the offense has been disjointed. The team has been disjointed. Almost wonder if the playoff futility has impacted them mentally. Do they need a mental coach or better coaching? What is up with the bullpen allowing inherited runners to score at a record pace - bad pitching or bad preparation. I can't attribute that to bad luck at this point because the bullpen has been consistently awful. Maybe bad luck that the every pitcher in the bullpen has collapsed at various points - there has not been a constant reliable arm to calm the storm. Astudillo hits well except when it is a pressure situation - then we can count on a pop-up, double-play or one of his rare strikeouts. Bad luck or can't rise up to the moment or just not good enough? Honestly Refsnyder has come up and hit and hit with men in scoring position - I know that won't last, but at least it is refreshing to see.
  16. One thought I had regarding the 6th inning decision - there were runners on 2nd and 3rd and one out. Vaughn was up and Collins was on deck. I was thinking if we should have walked Vaughn to pitch to Collins who is not as good a hitter. Would also set up the force at any base or double-play but then a walk forces in a run and Pineda just walked 2 people and Robles is know to give up a walk. Collins might have been pinch-hit for as well but Collins seemed to be struggling so I thought that could have been another choice.
  17. I have noticed that as well this year - that other teams seem to have more stable lineups. It seems the Twins are attempting some analytic lineup model. Even in past playoff games they may have trotted out a lineup that was different that what was used in the regular season. I don't know if there might not be greater value in lineup consistency in terms of offensive rhythm and production - getting big inning rallies. As you mentioned there have been injuries and positive covid tests this year which lead to more changes but guys seem to be moved up and down in the order a good bit more than other teams.
  18. Well, at least we have the minor league report now that their season has started. Nice diversion from this same play reel.
  19. Not sure our bullpen could be much worse - it is a slow painful torture to even watch them pitch.
  20. Their main issue is that they are playing "October Playoff baseball". Unfortunately its the Twins version of playoff baseball. I feel like it has continued into this season with the offense. Individual players have been hot but they have not had a team offense yet. Between injuries and resting and Covid lineups have been all over the place - there is still time to Gel but can't waste too much more time and this is very difficult to watch.
  21. Half-joking here but I have a suggestion for watching Twins games - watch for the the first 3 hours and then turn off the game - don't waste more of your time. Colome needs to be moved to mop-up duty and too many dead spots in the line-up - yes that means you Sano, Cave and Jeffers. Its early and I am sure those batters and relievers can turn things around.
  22. Yesterday's loss was painful but there were many good points highlighted here in the Article - Maeda pitching out of difficulty, Buxton, Kepler at the plate, Stashak, Rogers and Robles in the Bullpen. Perhaps most worrisome to me is the 17 K's but just one game we will see how it plays out. Watching the White Sox-Angels game made me feel a little better. Chicago had some issues in the field late and their bullpen blew the lead in the 8th. Iglesias closing for the Angels looked pretty Haderish - right-handers had some futile swings against him.
  23. Great write-up Parker! Very interesting and informative. Excited to see him pitch this season.
  24. I am fortunate to be a Twins fan that lives in Texas so I will subscribe to mlb.tv again and catch most of the games. I’ll miss the Houston and Texas games which will be blacked out. I have YouTube TV which does not have the local FoxSW channel any more.
  25. I was counting on the time spent together as a time for the players to share their viewpoints on discrimination. When you have a personal interaction that can have more impact than just reading a tweet or even as well-meaning as they are and I applaud the team for coming together and choosing to take their action to boycott - the boycotts. To go with the ride-along - the league could hold a discrimination online seminar on the same day with the police and players watching together. Probably start the morning with that and that invites further discussion during the day.
