I'm paying a lot more attention to this draft then I normally do. Not really sure why. Maybe it's the Twins getting lucky and landing #5 or maybe it's a really strong draft class. I wonder if the 2020 draft and season have a lot to do with that. Pandemic/5 round draft/ a lot more HS players went onto college. The top 100 this year compares to the top 50-75 the last couple years. With that being said I'm wondering if this isn't an opportunity for the Twins to capitalize on their luck, a deep class and a large bonus money pool. Something like what the Pirates did in 2021 where they ended up with 5 of the top 100 prospects. Maybe the other teams are thinking that way as well. IDK just a thought. Don't get me wrong if one of Skenes, Langford or Clark (probably the most likely of the three) are there garb him and move on from that idea. But let's say a well under slot guy at 5, a HS catcher or pitcher at 34 (over slot $), then power arms or more HS players at high bonuses in rounds 2-4. Just curious how others feel/think about that strategy?

Agreed. ACL tears compared to multiple IL stints per season is a bit different. I wouldn't call Lewis injury prone at this point. Overreaction, both positive and negative is the status que on TD.. I'm guilty of it as well. Ober has been outstanding all season. With Ryan, Lopez and Ober locked in for 3-4 more seasons I'm feeling pretty good about our starters now and going forward. There were a few runs left on the field yesterday, but most were due to great plays by Baltimore not bad offense. Today a leftie starter with bad numbers...The Twins Kryptonite...

It'd have to be a huge under slot signing for this to make even a slight bit on sense at 5. At 5 I would hope if it's a hitter that has 3-4 stand out tools. not one, maybe 2. Didn't we draft like 6-8 SS last year and most look like 2nd or 3rd basemen? If they aren't taking the one of the obvious top 5 then I'd prefer Teel, Dollander, Lowder or Meyers.

Good pick at 34 or even 13 (our original spot?) at 5 taking a high floor/low ceiling player is poor talent acquisition...@ 5 you hope for a star not hope for a utility/2nd baseman/leftfielder when it's all said and done. Gifted the #5 pick and then wasting it on a safe pick is like building a roster of 3 true outcome players and wondering why the whole team struggles....

A batting order of Arraez, Correa, Buxton, Gallo and Kepler isn't going to produce that many more runs than putting Juilien or a healthy Polanco in his place. IMO. An example from yesterday's game. Kirilloff gets a leadoff base hit, Vazquez walks. the next three strike out. inning over...With RISP Arraez would definitely make the team a lot better at that. I just don't believe 1 player would fix this offense. Lopez has pitched well enough to give the team a chance to win most of his games. How many starters could you say that about the past couple seasons? The Marlins have Arraez, Soler, De La Cruz and Sanchez all playing well and hitting for average. We have none of that.

For lack of a better or more polite way to put it..The offensive problem is in the cover photo..With the platoon obsession. Correa and Buxton are the only real regulars. HOPEFULLY Correa turns it on in September and Buxton manages to make it through the WHOLE season as a DH. If not for how bad the Al central is, we would and probably should be talking about who we can trade..

I'm happy to take the heat I may deserve it but I want to argue against a few of the trades being bad ones... Pablo for Arraez. I get the huffing and puffing about it. Today I watched Kirilloff get a single followed by a Vazquez walk and then 3 K's. How is an amazing hitter like Arraez going to fix a team wide failure? An Arraez single that drives in a run is very unlikely to offset 5 innings who? of Chris Archer. VERY UNLIKELY...MLB network is already talking about how much $ he should make when he's a FA.. Dyson, is a given but is that something the FO can find out before the trade? Seems dicey to me. Sure, it definitely is a bad trade in hindsight. At the time it was a fair trade. The Twins didn't really part with anyone to bring Dyson onboard. Lopez...No argument here. Didn't like this trade then and REALLY don't like it now. 3 months total of great pitching in 2-4 seasons is a recipe for overpaying, and that is what happeneds.. 10 time out of 10 I'd trade Roger's and Rooker for Paddack, Pagan and Medina. A set up guy and a guy you probably have to cut for three lottery tickets. There aren't too many FO's that would do that trade. if any.. And finally, the elephant in the room. Yes, definitely the Twins lost on this (Mahle) trade. No agruement here..It was a gamble from the start and the Twins are paying for it now. Not unlike the Rays trading Ryan for Cruz. We and they gave up depth for immediate returns. The Rays are MUCH better positioned to have an oops. We are definitely not. 2 of 5 definitely bad or terrible. 2 of 5 meh....bad to OK, IDK 1 of 5 I disagree. I may and probably am wrong. I'll take 140-180 quality pitched innings over a .300- .350 BA with no power 7 days a week.

Teel seems like a draft for need at #5. Which sems like a big change for this FO. With a really deep draft it may come down to money. I want them to just take the top 5 guy that lands in their lap. But I'm leaning towards a under slot draft pick. IDK why but have little faith in the FO swinging for the fences...

Series Preview: Minnesota Twins v. Atlanta Braves
weitz41 commented on Sherry Cerny's article in Twins
Great preview! The Twins seems to play better against the better teams, and this should be the week to find out if that holds true. Should be a good test for that, with the Baltimore series after the Braves. 500 on the road +/- 1 would make for a good week. Let's start it off with a win tonight.- 15 comments

100% agree with this. Maybe a middle reliever or a depth piece. A big and costly addition seems like a waste at this point. If suddenly they start playing a lot better overall, then maybe. 1 player won't fix the team that played yesterday.

The Joey Gallo Reclamation Project Has Been a Failure
weitz41 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Moving them this afternoon would be good with me but unless someone calls the Twins, I doubt it will happen until then. -
Another tough loss. Really terrible to see De Leon get injured. Just when he was having a little success in MLB. We've seen guys come off the mound and head for the dugout that way before and its usually pretty bad news.

The Joey Gallo Reclamation Project Has Been a Failure
weitz41 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Yes and yes please..Hopefully after the all-star break we will have one or both of Wallner and Larnach starting in the OF. -
I agree that my comments aren't completely fair. Neither is this obsession with "if Arraez was on the team". I may argue that the AAA team from last season's second half wasn't all that much different than what we've seen so far this season. I think my point is that it takes all 26 players on the roster if not most of the 40-man roster to be good to great. 1 player will not fix that.
-
I know many/most won't agree with me but Arraez on the team would not make that much of a difference imo. This isn't basketball, one player hitting .400 will not offset 6 others hitting below .220. The second half of last season we had Arraez as our only good hitter and how did that work out? We'd just have more guys left on base and someone like Jordan Lyles pitching every 5th day. It's been a frustrating season, I get it, but this dead horse has been kicked enough...

Should the Twins Pursue Wil Myers?
weitz41 replied to Cody Schoenmann's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If it's a minor league deal, I don't see why not. Picking up his current contract, no thanks. Veteran reinforcements in Saint Paul has very little downside at this point in the season. The FO has built the team to win this season. So, I have a hard time seeing them trading away Kepler or Gallo and adding Myers would make sense. Plus, we only get to enjoy this pitching staff for this season.- 48 replies

Max Kepler isn't good at anything anymore
weitz41 replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
He's pretty good at holding down a roster spot. So..sorry you're a little off on the title.. -
I can't argue with that. That part was more about position flexibility than anything else. I expected people to react to the CES/Williams numbers.

What’s Happening with the Twins Outfielders That Have Left Since 2020?
weitz41 commented on Theodore Tollefson's article in Twins
After Kepler's 2019 I highly doubt any team would have held onto any of these over him. They're either platoon or depth outfielders. Rooker had a great month and a half. Now looks a lot like the guy who was traded, released and a free agent this offseason. Put Kepler in Atlanta's line up and I'd be shocked if his number didn't improve. Cave..no comment..Wade's a platoon 1b, as if we don't have enough of that going on already. Refsnyder, ok he'd be a nice 4th outfielder to have.- 21 comments

I'm going to have to add Williams to the list of guys in AAA that we need to see in Minneapolis... CES: .416/.675 OBP/SLUG, 23/53 BB/K CW: 396/.629 OBP/SLUG, 27/62 BB/K Oh, and he can be our 3rd catcher...
