  1. I don't think there is anything about this roster that I disagree with.
  2. These projected odds can be disregarded. There are too many things that can happen in an individual baseball game to come up with odds favoring either team, especially to within 0.1%. To claim that level of precision is so far beyond the threshold of ridiculous that it's barely worth commenting on. And even if these odds were significant the odds are close enough to 50% that there would be nothing surprising--nothing at all--for the team with lower odds to win any of the three games.
  3. I want to mention this: 11-4 (.733) in our last 15 regular season games. Level of competition notwithstanding, this team seems very capable of taking care of business.
  4. Make this note to yourself for future reference: Rand Balls Stu writes only sarcasm.
  5. You can, but just barely. Game 4 of the World Series is on October 31.
  6. Thin air affects batted balls too, you know. A fly ball to center that is caught at Target Field probably clears the wall in Denver. I think I've read that Ryan gets more fly ball outs than the average pitcher, and if that's the case it would be expected that Coors Field would be unkind to him. If I consider only starting pitching, I lean the same way as you regarding game 3. But one needs to consider the pitching staff as a whole. It's not difficult to envision a scenario in which Maeda enables us to win game 1 and/or game 2 by being available in the bullpen.
  7. Partially correct, partially incorrect. Texas beats Seattle in a 2-way tiebreaker. Seattle beats Houston in a 2-way tiebreaker. Houston beats Texas in a 2-way tiebreaker. Seattle wins a 3-way tiebreaker.
  8. Unfortunately Phil Cuzzi umpires badly and unfairly without trying.
  9. Hicks is not a good comparison. Think back to what the Twins' situation was in 2013 when he first came up. The Twins had traded Denard Span and Ben Revere not to clear space for Hicks but because they got offers that were widely viewed as overpayments. They knew Hicks probably wasn't ready but they saw the athletic skills and chose to roll the dice with him, partly because they weren't expecting to contend anyway. Sometimes things work out well and sometimes they don't.
  10. Actually, you can, if the pitch is not held by the catcher. A runner can score on a wild pitch, a passed ball, or an error.
  11. My wife and I celebrate our 32nd Anniversary this week. (You can do the math.) Our families and attendants waved homer hankies at the conclusion of our wedding. We were on our honeymoon during the ALCS but we attended all four home games of that year's World Series. It was a pretty special time, I must say.
  12. The contrast between "best" and "most valuable" is interesting. A great case study is Steve Carlton in 1972. He had one of the best seasons a starting pitcher has ever had but he pitched for a Phillies team that finished in last place by a wide margin. So as great as he was that year he was not valuable. At all. Sonny Gray's situation is different. Even though the Twins lost an inordinate number of games he started his consistency was a significant contribution to the team's success, and from what I understand the intangibles of having him on the roster were also an asset. I wouldn't say he's the clear-cut team MVP but neither is anyone else on the roster. I certainly think he's a legitimate choice.
  13. In the olden days (before 1995) having two top-flight starters could get you a World Series win. (The 1987 Twins are exhibit A.) Those days are gone. In today's era having two top-flight starters is obviously good but that's no longer enough. To get 11 or 13 wins a team needs at least 3 and probably 4 starters capable of holding down the other team. That's why it doesn't mean much to compare the rotation on a 2023 team to the rotation on a team from the distant past. I know very little about starting pitching depth on the other postseason-bound teams but I would hazard a guess that we are as well-situated as anyone.
  14. As of right now Toronto is more likely than Texas. If Toronto hits a snag this week they could easily be our first round opponent.
  15. He's always there in case of emergency. But it would have to be that for him to play in the majors in 2023. And even then it's probably not worth doing.
  16. Reinsdorf just doesn’t get it. After 2016 Jim Pohlad recognized that the Twins needed not just new management but a complete reboot of the entire organization. It appears to me that the White Sox desperately need the same thing to take place and that will never happen under Reinsdorf.
  17. There’s no question that the top priority is to have him functioning as well as possible on October 3 and beyond. I am certain that the team will act with that in mind. For people on this website to post a specific regimen is silly because we simply don’t know enough. And whether he plays or not, if we can’t qualify for the postseason during the remaining 11 games we don’t deserve to make it.
  18. So will Target decide to spend even more for a patch when they already spend plenty for the naming rights? Is that a cost-effective PR expenditure?
  19. Please, no Wisconsin references on a Minnesota uniform.
  20. It’s the classic dilemma. He can’t face lefties because he doesn’t have experience and he can’t get experience because he doesn’t face lefties. The obvious solution is to get experience in low leverage situations. The ninth inning of the game against Tampa Bay was not that.
  21. If Ober is rejuvenated by the rest he’s been getting while on the AAA roster he should be the fourth starter if and when we get to that point.
  22. A month ago we still needed to have him available to start in case the Keuchel experiment backfired. It was only after Keuchel was found to be performing acceptably that they had the option of converting him to relief for the remainder of the season. I expect the organization will want him to revert to starting next spring.
  23. Trading Larnach makes sense for the organization and it would give him a better opportunity to become an established major leaguer. But every other team knows that too, and that’s going to bring down his trade value. The ideal scenario is to find a team who has a need for a player with his skill set.
  24. In his postgame interview he mentioned making adjustments. That’s how he did it. It would have been extremely difficult to hit that pitch as far as he did just by reacting to it. He anticipated how Littell would pitch him and was prepared to apply his skill as a major league hitter when he got the pitch he expected.
