    I wish people would give up trying to judge trades too soon after they are made. (I didn't even bother to read this article.) For the umpteenth time, a trade can not be properly evaluated until the careers of the involved players have concluded. And if any of the involved players are included in other trades then it's necessary to wait for the careers of players involved in those trades to conclude. In some cases it can take decades to know. As an example, look at the Escobar/Duran trade. Escobar has had some very good years since we traded him, so based on performances up to now, the Twins clearly lost that trade. 10 years from now it would be judged an overwhelming win for the Twins if Duran has a long career as an elite reliever.

    I'm totally in favor of players being recognized for their achievements, both in terms of monetary bonuses and in terms of awards and the like. I think it would be good and appropriate to have bonuses tied to full-season awards, for example an all-pro team, MVP, Cy Young, and so forth, rather than tied to ASG appearances.

    There are too many words in the OP and the thread for me to read all of it. 2twins87 has the gist of the situation. Scouting and player development are two separate functions and both are instrumental in the success of the organization. It's possible that we have developed our hitters extremely well, but that they simply aren't talented enough to do better, which means the scouting system didn't succeed. It's also possible that our hitters are extremely talented but player development didn't succeed in maximizing their skills. I don't know enough about either matter to know where our organization stands.

    So ****ing what? The ASG is a meaningless farce that does nothing more than prevent chosen players from getting a beneficial break from games that actually count for something. Actually, that's not quite true. The function of the ASG is to earn take money from advertisers and other sponsors, which ultimately comes from us fans. So I guess from the viewpoint of MLB it's worthwhile. But from my viewpoint it would be just as well if it didn't exist.

    Bummer about Lewis. Big time. But this is a golden opportunity for Miranda to try to capture some of what he had going on last year. Let's hope for good times!

    Coming out of ST I expected far more games like this than we have seen. As many have already said, if our hitters perform up to their abilities the division is ours, maybe in a runaway.

    I strongly believe that he IS busting it down the line as fast as he can but is being slowed considerably by the PF.

    I think it goes back to one of the things Tom Kelly is known for saying: put your players in situations where they can succeed. In Pagan's case, it's lower leverage situations. Avoid late and close. He usually does OK as the earliest reliever. Try to limit him to that. We can quibble about verbiage, but while this role isn't necessarily an important one, it's still necessary to have a pitcher who can succeed in that role so that the high leverage guys can be available when needed. I think about LaTroy Hawkins. The Twins knew he could be a good major league pitcher, and they first tried to use him as a starter. That didn't work. Then they tried him as a closer. That didn't work. Then they tried him in other roles in the bullpen. He succeeded. When he went to the Cubs after leaving the Twins they tried him as a closer. Again, that didn't work. But once he was put in situations where he could succeed he wound up having a really good career. I'm not saying Pagan can be the next LaTroy Hawkins. But with the pitches that he has he should be able to fill a role in a major league bullpen if he is used properly.

    If your team has a big lead or a big deficit WPA underweights good performances and bad performances, especially late in a game.

    No team has ever used a 6-man rotation for an extended stretch. First, your best starters should pitch every 5th day, whether you have 1, 2, or 5. Second, many pitchers actually pitch less well with too much rest. Third, it means the bullpen is one man smaller. Going with it on a short-term occasional basis or using a one-time spot starter is probably beneficial in special circumstances but I think it's bad strategy generally.

    BTW, I don't think there is a separate "mental health injured list" as there is with concussions. Nor should there be. It's simply the injured list.

    Yeah, I know, bad form to quote myself. And getting a bit off-topic. But I never get tired of watching this fielding play.

    It's interesting about baseball. Pretty much everyone agrees that pitching is the most important of the four aspects of the game, followed by hitting, fielding, and base running in that order. But great pitching is boring video and TBH great hitting is not much better. Great fielding plays usually make the best highlights and the Castro-Correa-Jeffers play is a good example. That was really sweet.

    I don't know anything about him, but if that were the case I'm sure he'd be getting a lot of time behind the plate. Every team wants and needs good catching so I have to assume his performance was not of high enough caliber.

    I know better than to jinx our favorite team with a prediction. But on the surface the saying that it's not just which team you face but when you face them appears to be in our favor. The Tigers are severely reeling and we are not. Go Twins!

    Many very good baseball players bounced between the majors and AAA early in their careers. Torii Hunter is a good example. Very often these things just take time.

    Yep. The St. Croix is the boundary separating us from the dark side, and that's only 28 miles from Target Field.

    I agree. I think the Twins' rotation can carry them through a full length postseason run if we are good enough and fortunate enough to do it. I think Ober or Varland are just as good as the fourth starter any other team would use. I almost feel uncomfortable talking about the postseason when it's only June, but keep in mind that for the 3-6 seeds a postseason record of 13-9 would win the whole thing. So it's just a matter of being mildly hot at the right time.

    Yes, and as the result of logical reasoning. With the possible exception of schedule changes due to postponements there are enough days off in the postseason schedule to accommodate a 4-man rotation with 4 days off for each pitcher.
