$$$$$$ If the money is better, that's the deciding factor I'm sure. Why does everyone think anyone associated with baseball or sports in general always goes to a winning place, city they want, etc. They have a few years to make money, they are going where cash is king.

Well, the balls he hit over the fence were hit about a mile and like was stated earlier, he was towards the top of the league in exit velocity. Hit the ball hard, good things happen. Swing at good pitches, good things happen. Did he get an extra couple HRs from the live ball? Maybe, but it's not something I think would drastically change his stats or the results of what he does.

He shrunk in the postseason for sure, but he wasn't alone in this regard. I saw a much different hitter the second half of the year. His patience at the plate is what makes him good. He had this and showed it right away when he came up from the minors to start his career. The swing and miss is still something he struggles with, but I think that can be corrected as well. We saw what happens when he is able to catch up with those fastballs, he hammers them and becomes one of the most dangerous bats in the game. As for his defense. I will be honest. I do not really care about it. The bat is so good I would work on perfecting that even more with the thought that eventually he moves over to 1B or takes over the DH spot when Cruz retires. If it's me, I DEFINITELY have him as part of my plans for this team going forward.

I'd love him back on a 1-2 year deal at a price that makes sense for the Twins. If they aren't able to get him back, someone that is great defensively with MLB experience would be my choice.

I would surmise it is not the fact that lower prospects wouldn't get it done. I feel as if this information was leaked because the Twins were unwilling to beat the offer accepted even without using Lewis and Kiriloff. They don't tell the truth to their fans over there all the time. Or at the very least, they leave parts of the truth out. They have always made it seem as if the other organization is the villian, "the asking price was too high", "he turned down our offer and wanted too much money", etc. Now, I am not all that mad they didn't make a trade for Stroman. I don't feel he is that great. There have been chances over the years though to add real talent by giving someone up and they haven't done it. Basically, I really won't believe anything from them until there is proof their offer was higher both in terms of trades or FA signing. That's me, I'm sour. Most of it comes from blowing 2006 and 2010. Even though those were a long time ago, it still chaps my hide. LOL

I'm not sure alot of folks actually feel this way. I'm pretty sure there is a good portion of the fanbase that is more than ok with using of few of those guys from the top of your list as long as it brings back real talent. Twins have been the ones trying to trade peanuts for ribeye steaks, at least over the years they have been.(Maybe that's what you meant with your post, sorry) I will give this FO credit, they have done a pretty darn good job so far. But to me, the biggest test is these next couple years. This is the same type of thing Terry Ryan was faced with, with a few of his cores. He declined to do anything significant and it was the start of the 16 game streak of gettiing beat in the postseason. The real question, IMO, is will the ownership allow their FO to break from the Twins mold and do what it takes to build a real contender? Or will they toe the line and continue with the cheap ways and prospect hoarding we have seen for years?

How do you know this? Look at what he was traded for? No one near the level of either one of those 2 players. I'm curious how people think that what was leaked from Twins officials are what ultimately was going on. I just look back on all kinds of trades and see what was it ACTUALLY took to acquire guys from time to time and it seems to me, most of the time, Twins would have been able to match or beat these offers. Like Syndergaard. I don't believe for one second that the Mets actually believed they would get Lewis and Kiriloff both for him. Did they start there? Maybe. But I would be willing to bet either one of those guys, plus another from our top 7-15 would have got that trade done without an issue.

Not very many and that is kind of the point. Half of the time it doesn't take guys like Lewis and Kiriloff. The problem is the Twins have a hard time getting rid of guys even rated in their top 20!

Hoping it continues and that I'm not jinxing him by saying this. But he is the best pure hitter on this team hands down. Great eye at the plate, ability to really work counts. He won't swing at junk and is great at spoiling great pitches made by the opposing hurler. He is also extremely fun to watch, I love the "nope" head shakes when he takes a close pitch that is called a ball. I think it is a forgone conclusion that not only is he a starter next year, but that is firmly entrenched into the 1 or 2 spot in the lineup until he does something to lose it or get hurt. It is also kind of baffling to me how we didn't hear more about this guy coming up through the system. Yes, there is not a ton of power there, but that kind of plate discipline and control of the strikezone is rare and as good as I've seen.

Of course be smart. But also, you can't be afraid to fail either. If there is someone out there in a trade or signing that you feel has a great chance to improve your club, don't hold back because you think some kid in A ball might be the next coming or feel that by spending money now you won't be able to have enough to sign your own guys later. There is no later. Teams and players go up and down all the time. If there are chances to make things happen, be aggressive.

So, can I ask what is the best way in your opinion for the Twins going forward to form a formidable pitching staff with the gumption to win some playoff games/series? This core has Jose Berrios as a part of it and nothing else. So is that to say we PUNT on this core? Do we not attempt signing or trading for high end pitching talent this offseason and next?

3 critical developments. KC Detroit CWS Add in September rosters in and AL that was severely top heavy for a 4th if you wish. I kid, I kid. I am hoping Duffey can continue the stretch he was on the second half of the season. He looked really good out there, was throwing gas and his breaking stuff seemed to have a heck of alot more bite on it than years past when that looping curveball was his best pitch.

Yep, keep being "careful". 20 straight games without a postseason win will sound great at the end next season. I'd say now is the time to be BOLD, not careful. Go for it for once. In a couple years this core is gonna outprice the Twins budget. Right now they have lots of payroll space and lots of production that costs pennies baseball wise.

And that's just it. Also, pretending that your top 3 starters aren't the best pitchers on your staff is a fool's errand as well. Let Verlander pitch 1-2 innings every 3rd day and he would be the most dominant reliever in baseball history most likely. How about Stephen Strasburg as a closer? He likely breaks strikeout records for a reliever. Having talent and lots of it in a pitching staff is what will win you playoff games. Patching together will probably work over the course of a full season where you play lots of bad teams. But when it comes down to brass tacks, both your starters and your bullpen guys have to be top end if you want to get to the big dance.

The thing is though, there is nothing new to this kind of thinking in any way. Even High School and college coaches know that their guy is going to be better with rest than without. This seems like trying to drum up something out of nothing. Here's my question to this line of thinking. In a game you need to win, would you rather have your best guy on no or little rest? Or your worst guy feeling the best he possibly can? Me I go with my stud rather than throw out the bottom of the barrel just because numbers and averages tell me so. Common sense and dancing with the gal who brought ya, you know.

I am with you, but the difference between the Twins and the Astros is that the Twins avoid risk at all costs. Astros are aggressive. I think the Twins are on the right track as far as building the organization to be more self sustaining, more analytical, etc. Now they just need some balls. Literally, that is the big thing that is missing so far. That and a willingness to put themselves into the top 10 in payroll when the situation warrants itself.

This. 100X over. It is always reported the Twins were in on such and such a player and they decided not to come here. If they were top bidders, it would be in their interest to leak that information to the press. "Cole accepted 5/150, Twins offered 6/180." Something like that. We have never heard this coming out of Twinsville and there is a reason for it. Offer the top bid and you will get your guy 75% or better of the time. This is business and if you think these guys aren't out for money more than anything, you are fooling yourselves. They are also under pressure to take the highest bid by their peers. Something else to think about.

Do not agree with #3 at all. Berrios is young. I think there is no doubt that he can still improve. He has the stuff, he has the drive. He is more than capable of beating the big boys if he has to. Has he shown it yet? Maybe not so much, but the guy is only 25. His best years will be his next 3-4 just like almost every starter that ever achieves "ACE" status.

I can agree here. So that means if you want a top stud, you have to buck up and pay him. Yep, it will be an overpay. But you have a team filled with cheap guys that hit the hell out of the ball. If not now, it will never happen. That or you have to be smarter than everyone else and figure out a way to trade for someone that isn't blowing doors off now, but with a tweak here, tweak there can do so.

Cole was a #1 overall draft pick and a #1 starter in Pittsburg. He was no diamond in the rough. Everybody knew what he was. He has just matured and now has become the dominant force that his potential said he could be when he was drafted.

I'd give it to him. I don't care about the Pohlad's money. Who cares if you might be able to get him for 2/25 or 3/40 or whatever. Give him the QO and he's here almost for sure. Plus if he sucks, then you let him walk after a season. The only thing I would be leary about would be that whatever he was taking was helping his performance. There is almost no doubt in my mind he was using performance enhancing drugs. How often are you able to sign 31 year old pitchers with his numbers to a one year deal? It's fairly rare I'd say. Just give him the QO and be done with it.

And that right there is why now is the time to go all in. Lots of productive guys there that are playing for cheap.

Boy, not if I am the GM. Adrianza has been an extremely solid guy for this team in his time here. He's not going to break the bank either way, I don't think. He's arbitration eligible, so he can still be here on a 1-year deal. No way they get rid of him and if they do, I think that would be the definition of Pohlad Pocket Protecting.

The game isn't played on paper. It's not run on a computer either and things like emotion, want, confidence are real things. Both for players and fans. Had they been competitive, there would be some momentum going towards next season. As it sits, you have a fanbase that doesn't believe and feels it's more of the same. I'm guessing many players feel this way as well. I can see your point, but I don't agree with it. 16 losses in a row. That means something, whether you want to admit it or not.

Do you remember game 1? We were up 2-0. The boys were hitting homeruns like that had all season. Bad stuff happened when our 1st baseman didn't catch a ball. Then it compounded when our manager made every bad decision possible when it came to handling the pitching staff. We should have won game 1, hands down. That happens, we are in a much different position. As it were, we lost a winnable game, got spanked in game 2(another game in which the pitching wasn't handled well) and then came home for game three knowing it was just a matter of time before or season was over.
