  1. This is about the one year overpay I was suggesting for Story. Definitely need to know if the Twins can trade him or not.
  2. If you think you can get Story for $22MM a year for 5 years, just offer him something like $35MM for one year. He can get a longer contract next year when things have settled down. Twins can use him at SS, even trade him in July if need be for prospects. Gives us three months to assess Lewis and Martin, and gives the illusion that the front office really wanted to compete this year.
  3. Which is why I think it would be a savvy move by the Twins to throw some outrageous money at either Carlos Correa or Trevor Story for one year, something like 1.5x what they're looking for… but for only one year. Sell it to the player as chance for the player to work on their long-range contract during the year or in the next off season, which should be quite a bit more stable than this year was. This would give the Twins • a shortstop • a chance to spend the money that they didn't • more time to evaluate Lewis and Martin • a really great trade chip at the All-Star Break if their season completely sucks
  4. Injuries and a COVID-shortened season and lock-out and no real MLB paycheck to help make up for it = The Big Suck.
  5. I kept thinking that Kennys Vargas might have actually developed if he had been given more consistent playing time.
  6. It's built into your name to expect that: Major-League Ready. ?
  7. Minor league pitching, sure. Something like for Cruz,
  8. Let him DH and play some 1st/3rd as needed in 2022. Hope he gets hot, then trade him to a contender since the Twins will need more pitching in 2023 after not having enough in 2022.
  9. Well… I suspect that they will get plenty of chances to test their skills.
  10. I'd rather play him as soon as possible at SS to see if he can play there or not. Twins in 2022—at least so far—have no real starting pitching, so it's not like there's a lot more they can lose by playing a team with a lot of rookies with something to prove on it. Just do something more for the fans with the $50MM or so they didn't spend this year.
  11. Nicely written. I hope he reads and actually considers this.
  12. Looking forward to seeing your next two team trades suggestions, Jamie.
  13. I love Nellie. But we have no room for him unless many players are traded/dumped.
  14. Well… it gets down to how steep and soon the bonus escalates. Sharp-inclining escalators seem more like buying shares in a stock that did really well last year then blindly assuming it will repeat at the same or better level of performance next year and beyond. I'd hate to base any sizable long-range contract bonus upon something that happens in the first year of said contract, especially if pre-contract, the player had a significant history of injuries. But, if it's a more of an exponential growth, I could get onboard.
  15. Well… that's ridiculous. "Locking in" defeats the whole purpose of "incentives." If that is what Byron's Agents are insisting upon, then trade Buxton immediately.
  16. If Hybrid three-innings guys are to become a staple in baseball (and I've been wanting the Twins to try a one-time-through-the-order type of mix and match inexpensive pitchers), I think you still need two quality Ace type for playoffs. Perhaps you can get by with just one then trade for one at the All-Star Break? Worth a shot at this point. Why not? It would be a hard sell, though, to get a superstar SS onboard when he learns the plan.
  17. Ah, that makes sense. Then the Twins need to hang onto Dobby or trade him now.
  18. I wish the Twins had played Gordon full time at SS the last month of the season.
  19. I don't know how it works: If the Twins drop Dobnak off their 40-man, wouldn't any team picking him up then need to assume the salary of that long deal? And so, and if it's so bad, no one would take him, right? Then couldn't the Twins pick him up again later after the Rule 5 Draft when roster space isn't so crucial?
  20. An interesting question but not one that concerns much me until Twins sign Buxton and sign/trade for three quality starting pitchers with the floor for a #3 being Big Mike (hopefully better). If they solve Buxton and pitching, even Andrelton Simmons on a cheap SS contract would win you games.
  21. Sign Buxton and I'll be pretty happy. Pick up at least one reasonably high-tier starting pitcher in free agency (and also Big Mike as your #3), then trade for the best higher-tier young pitcher you can, a #2 guy. Solve everything else in-house unless a sweet trade deal or free agent appears in your lap.
