  1. “Dobnak would take over the fifth starter spot--unless the Twins decide that every win counts.” Cudos, Mr. Blonigen! This might be the single best sentence in the history of TD writing.
  2. If you mean “let him be a minor league pitcher”…you’re right (kinda). If you mean a major league pitcher, the evidence is overwhelming that he can NOT be good…over any meaningful number of innings…in any role.
  3. Since Buxton’s first ‘full’ season (2016)… Games played: Buxton -709 Santana - 1229 (an additional 3.2 seasons worth of games) Availability is an ability.
  4. Yikes. I wouldn’t call a 5 games winning streak terribly ‘hot’ when 3 games were against one of the worst teams in history. But this game is a bit of a heat check. If you win tonight on the road with that lineup against a good starter and what is actually a good bullpen…then you’re officially hot. I would imagine Lewis will see absolutely nothing over the plate, while the games is close anyway.
  5. One of the more dramatic examples of Twins players who have cut down on the K’s. I do think it’s hurt his EV’s some and, with that, the BABiP. His K’s have not spiked during the slump. And, his BABiP has tanked SO much, it’s reasonable to expect somewhat better results over the remainder of the season.
  6. Both Cleveland and KC have a ton of young guys that might continue to get better over the next few seasons…as does Detroit for that matter, and they’re almost average now. The Twins are still in a decent spot overall. I don’t mind the bar being raised for the Twins to ‘compete’. Sets up a better chance to make a run if/when you make the postseason, IMO.
  7. Definitely room for improvement. Winning is always a good thing. Just need to continue to make baby steps getting better, more consistent, etc. The August schedule going forward looks challenging. Looking forward to the return of Correa. Need him.
  8. Cubbies a little flat after the big St Louis series me thinks. More runs needed tomorrow probably. But good job by Festa and bullpen taking advantage!
  9. He’s always had spectacular stretches…spectacularly good and spectacularly bad. I think this has been one of his longest stretches of good. Maybe not as ridiculous as some of his hot streaks over the years, but very good. Even mixed with the poor results earlier, the production is very good. Meanwhile, he’s been primarily available defensively. I doubted whether he had a season like this in him anymore. But, he’s headed for his best season…by far, IMO. (knocking wood)
  10. Yes…has some defensive and baserunning value it seems. We can also hope Wallner is a better student of the craft than was Sano in terms of adjustments and understanding what pitchers are trying to do with him, etc
  11. In summary: Wallner swings really really hard, which makes the ball go fast and far when contact happens. Contact frequently doesn’t happen. Pretty much exactly like Sano in his early years. Will longer term results be different? Too early to tell, IMO.
  12. When all your rivals are trouncing real clubs, and your team is laboring against the White Sox.
  13. True. But this only carries over to the actual matchup if you assume the respective pitching performances will be equal. And the Twins pitching hasn’t been even too close to the equal of any of these clubs with the exception of Boston. Hence, the frustration with the deadline.
  14. Well, kinda. After the beat down Cleveland put on the Orioles yesterday, even if they only win 1 of the next 3, the Twins are looking at picking up 1 or 2 games. And I wouldn’t bet on the Orioles winning 2 of the next 3 in Cleveland. With a current 6.5 game gap, Twins probably need to dominate Cleveland in their remaining matchups regardless. We’re getting very close to the point where wild card would be the only realistic path.
  15. Um…sitting with the best record in baseball. Yep. Better than the Phillies. Better than the Dodgers, the Yankees, and the Orioles. Also, better record than the Twins in their last 10 games. So, not exactly looking terribly vulnerable at the moment.
  16. His BABiP so far this year is 387...about 100 points higher than his career average. He's a 110-ish OPS+ guy whose entire offensive value...what makes him 'good'... is his ability to take a base-on-balls. Meanwhile, he can only play 1B or DH from a practical standpoint. But we always yearn for what we once had. I guess.
  17. How does a guy with a 1.14 WHIP and an average HR-allowed rate have such a poor ERA and negative WAR?? Well...this year his OPS allowed with RiSP is 1.047. The Twins plan, obviously, is to never use this reliever in situations where......um, you really, REALLY need a reliever. Innovative! For all other situations, we got our guy!
  18. Especially in the 4th inning. Meanwhile, they must have had to call Sands out of the clubhouse. Pre-game plan didn’t have him pitching until the 6th, apparently.
  19. The article’s headline is 100% accurate. The Twins must do trades BEFORE the deadline.
  20. That 9th inning by Thielbar had to be a huge blow to Ober’s confidence.
  21. Emphatic no for me. Time to let the young guys with much higher upside go. Nothing against Dobnak…and he’s getting paid well for his efforts, for what he is.
  22. Why do switch hitters that are far superior from the right side continue to switch hit?
  23. You make a great argument for Raya to be outside the top 10…then you put him at 6?? Zero evidence he’s on a path to be a major-league starter. Graterol 2.0, but without a dominant pitch.
