    And to be fair…KC, DET, and CLE have all built their current records with the benefit of having played one, if not two, series already against this club. KC has won 3 games against +500 teams…CLE 6.

    I think the Sox are tanking the year. Robert and Jimenez are young enough to make it “work” if that’s the word to use…but if everyone is healthy, they’re still bad…but yes, not as embarrassingly bad.

    Not a good look for MLB IMHO, that you can have a lineup like the White Sox and a lineup like the Dodgers in the same league. The gap between best and worst keeps growing.

    Yes and no. Those teams don’t want to give up revenue from hosting the Yankees…and the media outlets don’t want fewer Yankees/Red Sox games (for instance)

    Schedules are still ‘unbalanced’. ALC gets 13 games against them…ALE, ALW get 6 or 7. Just not AS unbalanced as before.

    Just like the stock market…it won’t bounce until everyone has sold!

    Paddack has starts against Milwaukee, Dodgers, and Orioles. Kinda/sorta hung in against the first two…demolished by Baltimore.

    Some decent and good individual early results. Team-wise, not so much. Seems like the teams that are off to a decent start with the bats, have pitching staffs that are off to bad starts…and vice-versa. St Paul has been nothing short of horrendous with the bat in their hands. Exception: DeShawn Keirsey (although Will Holland and Anthony Prato have gotten off to solid starts, as well). Too bad Keirsey isn’t on the 40-man.

    I don’t really think it’s as simple as his ‘control’. In his previous start against Baltimore he faced 27 batters and didn’t walk one. Problem was, he gave up about a dozen missiles that landed in and around the greater Baltimore metropolitan area. So, what do you do in your next outing? You stop challenging and you start nibbling. Command’s great…but most starters make multiple ‘mistake’ pitches a game. I think Varland needs to find something new/different, so that his ‘mistakes’ are not so harshly and frequently punished.

    Interesting article. It would be interesting to compare these numbers to Julien’s at the AA level. To me, he’s simply doing what works. And that is…he’s taking advantage of inexperienced and unpolished pitchers who are, in general, not capable (and not willing at times, I’m sure) of consistently beating him with quality pitches late in counts. It’s hard for me to imagine how he ‘artificially’ makes adjustments in AA that he doesn’t need to make to be successful and get his team wins at that level. Most humans are only successful making adjustments…when they have to…when they can see and experience the ‘why’….which also informs the ‘how’ and ‘how much’. If this continues (high OPS with extreme walk/K rates), I think his shelf life in AA should be very short. If you’ve watched this guy at all…he screams CONFIDENT…the body language is almost over the top at times. Sure seems like a kid who would be able to weather some failure along the way…maybe even benefit from it. The sooner, the better, IMO.

    Didn’t see it. Does Jack Jack get hit incredibly hard over and over? And over? Until someone mercifully takes him out of the fight?

    You’re bound to stress the bullpen as he ramps. Obviously, it’s a desperation move…sadly worth considering despite it only being April. Meanwhile, Alcala might be turning back into Alcala back in St Paul.

    Anyone else notice that Brandon Winokur played SS on Saturday? What’s up with that? He had an error…but even if this is just a long-shot experiment…it says something about the skills and athleticism the org sees in this kid. A 6’-6” shortstop. Impressive.

    You’re speaking in general, right? There’s certainly nothing Rocco could have done to change today’s outcome. And even at that, I wouldn’t suggest any ONE person got the club into this spot, nor will it be ONE to get them out.

    Reality check on Varland... Last year he threw 68 innings. Meanwhile, nobody in the league that threw more than 55 innings gave up HR's as frequently as Varland. Despite all the hard contact, he managed an ERA only slightly below league average, with the help of a friendly BABiP against...again, despite the hard contact. Is he cable of having some good outings? Probably. But nobody...least of all Twins management...should be all that surprised at the early results this year. There was a reason much of the narrative in the off-season was that he was in line to maybe be a #5 behind whoever the Twins signed (turns out no), and behind Paddock (yikes).

    You forget about the propensity for giving up the long ball. But other than those things...

    Saints dead last in the International League in just about every batting category including BA, OBP, and SLG. Things you don’t hear every day: we need Kepler.
