    This club…and the manager…make the 2016 club, and it’s manager, look positively gritty and over-achieving.

    Full blown 5-alarm dumpster fire. It’s not Rocco’s fault the Twins are bad. But on the other hand, it’s hard to lose this often and this bad, and hold a team together. Have to admit, Rocco does not look the part of someone up to that task. This is starting to feel like a complete rebuild may be the only way out.

    Just win, baby! Last time the Twins won a playoff series, the hero was... A.J. Pierzynski. And for that...and his ability to play (even the catcher position) on a nearly every day basis, year after year...he’s one of my all-time favorite Twins.

    $25M+ AAV, 6+ years? If a large market team is going to pay Buxton anything at all like a ‘superstar’ based on...what, 300-400 recent PA in a 7-year career where he’s accomplished almost nothing....then, he’s gone. The Twins can’t afford to take that gamble, and they’d be stupid to do so. Almost never plays more than half a year, just got his career OPS+ to 100...and will never be as good defensively as he was yesterday, especially now that we’re into a new era of Buxton injuries that impact his running. Don’t get me wrong, I get why someone would take that gamble, and probably will...but I pray it’s not the Twins. And I don’t think it will be.

    Some, even many, or most injuries are just an instance of bad luck. But over eight seasons, the number...and the number of different types of injuries... I’m sorry, but over the long haul, the ability to be available...as Bud Grant famously said, the most important ability is availability. It’s an ability just like being fast or having power. And Buxton doesn’t have it.

    I don’t think of several of these guys as Twins ‘left fielders’. Turns out, for good reason. I went back and checked...Shane Mack and Larry Hisle, neither put in more than one season where they played LF in even half of the games. They both moved all over the outfield (they both had big-time arm-strength issues)...and put in time at DH. Meanwhile, Bostock played considerably more CF and RF than LF for the Twins. So, to me it comes down to Allison, Rosario, and Gladden (Stewart was good for 2 seasons) Bob Allison was pretty clearly the best player in this list, offensively and defensively. Gladden gets consideration for the 800+ OPS across two WS wins. He’d be my number 2.

    The only true TWINS father/son (both actually played for the major league team) would be Sal and Drew Butera, right? Also, Roy Smalley played for his uncle, who managed the Twins...and my uncle was my father figure...so kinda.

    An organizational sweep! Things are looking up at the shortstop position, Lewis’s injury not withstanding.

    Exactly this. Missed on Anderson...but if the Twins still had Wade and someone was willing to offer someone/something with a chance, the Twins would still be right to pull that trigger in a New York minute.

    Larnach does seem so calm in the box. My concern with Kirilloff is the OBP with his low BB rate.

    If Sano's BABiP gets to league average, he'll be much better than average. And if it works it's way all the way back to his career average, he'll be very, very good. Even this year, his HR/PA has been elite, better than guys like Judge and Stanton. Meanwhile, he's leading the Twins in HR and RBI...while struggling to make contact, and getting bad luck when he makes contact. Happy for Gordon. It's been a long journey for him. I'm pumping the breaks a bit, as it's only been 32 PA, and his BABiP is unsustainably high. Still, he looks the part of a nice piece to have on a roster. You can hate the Astros for cheating, but they don't have to cheat to be good. And they're proving it this year. That's a good ballclub, and this was a good win. Berrios was the star.

    Toronto sure treats Martinez strangely for a 19 year-old they think is going to stick at short...let alone stick as a plus defender. He DH’s and plays 3 rd a fair amount and speed doesn’t show up in his numbers, either. As Dman noted, he’s not going to be faster or more agile, with more range in 2-3 years when he arrives. His bat seems far ahead of Palacios and Javier...but he doesn’t seem closer than either of those two as a major-league shortstop. Maybe his bat projects so well, he’s a good 3B prospect? We need those too. Anyone else find it weird that Franklin hasn’t appeared in the minors yet this year when he had already dipped a toe into A+ ball in 2019? Red flag?

    In ‘79, Marshall appeared in 90 games...and finished 84, while pitching 143 innings...as a reliever...with 81 K’s. Game hasn’t changed much, has it? ?

    Being ‘kind’ or ‘fair’ or respectful with how you treat those in your organization has nothing to do with commitment to winning and willingness to take on significant financial risk in pursuit of championships. They’re two completely different things. The overwhelming majority of criticism of ownership found on this site is in relation to the latter. We can all agree that it’s good to root for an organization that will make a move like they did for Stashak. At the same time, let’s not pretend that even a dozen such moves would amount to even a decimal point on the financial statements.

    And now we know why Hackimer was allowed to fail so spectacularly...and humiliatingly...in the previous day’s game. Classy.

    How about because Hackimer is a human being? A manager letting a player fail is one thing. Letting him fail spectacularly, is another. And the next day the organization releases him. Classy.

    Twins will end up paying Dobnak $9.25M over the next 5 years. The Yankees will be paying Garrit Cole that over the next 7 weeks. In round averages, Cole is costing the Yankees about 20 times more than Dobnak is costing the Twins. And yet Dobnak only gave up 4 times as many runs. I see what you did there, Jim! Dobnak’s deal was brilliant! It’s the kind of deal that dynasties are built upon. In this case, the Polad family dynasty.

    How’d that work out? You aren’t suggesting Gardenhire would have left him in the game if he hadn’t hit the pitch limit, are you? Hackimer threw 4 strait balls to walk the bases loaded (third walk of the inning). Threw 4 strait balls to walk in the first run. Walked in the second run on a 3-1 count. Highly questionable. Left him in to pitch to yet another batter, to whom he threw a wild pitch before walking. Inexcusable, IMO.

    “The Bats scored three runs as Tom Hackimer walked six in the fourth.” I figured that HAD to be a typo, right? So, I looked up the box score. How does this happen? I know the league is developmental, but come on! You’d figure simple professional accountability (not to mention basic curtesy) to Hackimer himself, the players in the field, and the paying customers, would prohibit the 5th, let alone the 6th, walk from happening. In what universe can that be rationalized, Toby?

    There are already headlines in the papers of Minneapolis every day to slow the roll of tour buses into this city. A bad baseball team is just another one. At this point, It’s highly likely the rebound in 2021 attendance will be plenty muted. How severe and how the organization responds...we’ll see.

    To my way of thinking, you have to ‘earn’ your way to the all star game...despite the fact that we know it’s been a popularity contest for quite some time. So, no to Buxton with his 98 PA...and not having even started a rehab assignment yet. That leaves Berrios. But it would be a token appearance.

    Notice that when Sano starts hitting bombs, the batter in front of Sano (in close games) gets lots of fastballs over the plate. This has been easy to observe for about a week now. This is a good development, obviously, and is a reminder that the offense COULD possibly catch fire...particularly if Cruz and/or Buxton can get healthy. Don’t know that it can matter for this year given the hole, and given the pitching. But, maybe the club can become more entertaining to watch. (Still, Monday’s game is a tough matchup, especially without a healthy Cruz.)

    Yeah, the lack of a 2020 season...especially for guys coming off major injuries...sure made Rule 5 decisions complicated. But, in the end, this is what Rule 5 is for. Wells gets his deserved opportunity. Good for him!

    This was a case of a highly resistible force (Cleveland’s offenses), running into a very movable object (Twins pitching). We won this battle of titans, but I wouldn’t draw too many favorable conclusions regarding Dobnak or the bullpen quite yet.
