  1. A good win and sweep. This is the way it should have been from the beginning. The first home run off Maeda was a good pitch. Gallo will hit homers at times but he's not a good hitter. A lot like Sano. Guys and Girls-- We gotta push heavily for Cruz to be the DH. I know Ohtani is the crowd pleaser but Cruz is a real DH. Vote! Vote! Vote!
  2. Because we expected so much, this feels close to the worst staff ever. Statistics wise it is among the 5 worst right now but let's see how the rest of the season goes. The relievers, after Colome, haven't been terrible but have been inconsistent. And Colome has been better lately. Subtract Shoe and Dobnack and the starters have been disappointing for what we thought we had- even Happ was ok for his first 5 starts. The offense, or lack of it, also has to be part of the blame for this poor season. I just hope management doesn't gut the core of the team because of one bad season. The core is still good- if it ever stays healthy- another issue.
  3. Ober should have started the 5th inning. Not pitching a pitcher because he hasn't pitched in very many games is dumb. If he hadn't thrown more than 75 pitches in a game then maybe, only maybe, wait until his next start but I agree with those who say he should have pitched one more inning.
  4. Whoa! This was ONE GAME. We were all talking about how great Littel was doing and then he gave up 4 runs without getting anyone out yesterday. Let's see how this guy does over time.
  5. Tampa has a brass that knows how to evaluate talent. And their minor league team in Durham (near me) wins the league almost every year. That is really saying something. Plus the big spenders in the East spend much time on the disabled list.
  6. I would almost be willing to bet that, if Buxton does get traded, that he stays injury free for 3 straight years. And who is this Pesch character. It sounds like he cannot hit major league pitching so why would we trade for him? I'd love to see him go to the Yankees where there are no walls to crash into. But, for the Twins sake, I hope they can keep him (and Berrios) or, if necessary, trade him to the National League- but next year at the deadline if we happen to have a team like this year (doubtful).
  7. Good to see Kiriloff go deep with his wrist issues and Maeda gave us about what was expected. The defense could have saved a run and the relievers were shaky at times but the offense didn't produce enough to win. Solo shots were nice but not enough. We tried and hopefully Happ can give us 6 good innings tonight.
  8. You don't break up an entire core of the team just because of one bad year/start. I could see trading Kepler and maybe Polanco out of this group but none of the others.
  9. Relievers can be good for one year or two and not so good the next year. But Littell was young and could have been protected. The sample size for 2020 was small. Also, the article never mentioned his pitch speed and bats missed which are important. Right now he, and the Giants, are playing over their heads. While it would be nice for both to continue, let's see where they are in mid-August. Hey, the Yankees gave up on Tauchman and he is flourishing with the Giants while the Yanks are starving for a left handed bat.
  10. I'm not sure why they changed his slider grip this Spring. Also, which batters were swinging at it? Major leaguers or minor leaguers. Dobnack's story to the bigs is a nice one but maybe it is not a long lasting one. I have hopes that he can recover a decent ability to pitch here (but not against the Yankees). We have him cheap for 4 more years if he lasts that long. If not, we haven't lost too much. Certainly the rest of this year and next year will tell the tale.
  11. Like I said before, Shoe would be ok when the starter doesn't have it. He can eat 3-5 innings in middle relief- depending on whether the Twins can get back into the game. Using some relievers on consecutive days when you had others available is a gamble. Last night it didn't pay off. So we move on and look towards what can be done for next year.
  12. Wrist injuries can be difficult to overcome without much rest and sometimes surgery. I say shut him down for the season and see what he can do in winter ball and/or next season. This season is over anyway and he may be too valuable for the future to risk further damage.
  13. We do not need a shortstop so the Toronto trade is out. The Cubs trade is interesting but I would want an additional player. Same with the Atlanta deal you proposed. If we don't extend Pineda (which I would choose) before the deadline, it makes sense to trade him. I still would like to explore a trade of Kepler to the Yankees for a couple of players or maybe Andujar and a prospect. The Yanks need a lefty hitter and might bite at that one.
  14. I had said that Shoe would be ok for long relief if the starter doesn't cut it. So bringing him in with the game on the line is a mistake. Bringing Alcala and Duffy in on consecutive nights was a mistake as well. So Rocco takes the blame for this one. Hopefully we can win the next 2 though the bullpen remains an issue. As for the person saying to "dump Simmons", I say NEVER, NEVER, NEVER.
  15. I think the biggest mistakes the Twins made in the off-season was 1- Letting Rosario walk- The Twins have little offense and Eddie provided a spark. 2- Not keeping Rich Hill- Replacing Hill with Happ could be a wash except that Hill has always been a good pitcher while Happ has been up and down. 3- Not signing a solid middle reliever to take May's place. Ok, they signed Colombe and he has bombed to this time but will be better from here on out (though not as a closer). They also got Robles as a "project" and he has been ok. But they didn't sign an Archie Bradley or similar who has done the job successfully. and their relievers don't strike people out which is what you need in this day and age. Signing Shoemaker was a gamble that hasn't worked though I still insist that he can be a 2-3 inning long reliever when the starter just doesn't have it that day. But injuries have hurt as well and replacements haven't been as good as advertised. So we look ahead to ????
  16. I would definitely keep Simmons and trade Donaldson if we get value for him. With money saved we could sign a good and healthy player. I'd also keep Pineda and maybe trade Polanco (again for value). As for Sano, I guess we may have no choice.
  17. IMHO you cannot count minor leaguers who have not played in the majors as part of the "big 6". Remember Gonsalves? He was our next 20 game winner (top pitching prospect for 2 years running) yet has never had success. And don't count Simmons out. You have to have a keystone to your defense.
  18. The article references the Cubs success. They were successful because they had Theo Epstein who had built the Red Son into champions and did the same with the Cubs. The Reds have good hitters and the Tigers good pitchers that bode well for their future. The Twins have a few good pieces (Berrios, Maeda and Buxton) but must keep them healthy. I would not trade Simmons or Rogers or even Robles who seems to be straightened out. Polanco, Garver, Kiriloff, Larnach and Rooker and Garrick are the future and Duffy and maybe Alcala can help. Gordon has had a nice start and Lewis is a possibility. Cruz and Donaldson and maybe Pineda (if we really want to trade him) should net us a prospect or two at the deadline. Kepler can get us some value as well. I figured he would go to the Yankees but he's not healthy right now. Sano is a big question mark as far as value goes. The rest are not going to get us much at all. It was a crap shoot with Shoemaker and we had to figure Happ as a stopgap until the prospects were "ready" (I hate that word). Colombe has been a disaster but has experience so maybe someone can give us a prospect for him. So we have to build but not totally tear down (IMHO).
  19. I voted for Buxton only but can see Berrios representing the team if Bux isn't healthy. Nobody else is even close except maybe Simmonds because "somebody" has to go.
  20. While I can see the possibility of trading Donaldson, who has underperformed for what we are paying him and doesn't stay healthy, the above trade is ludicrous and makes absolutely no sense. Why would we want a broken prospect and a CF who can't hit? Bradley had 1 decent season and that's it. All he is is a late inning defensive replacement. And we don't need a center fielder (though Buxton can't stay healthy either). And who is this DeRosa who seems to know nothing.
  21. Ortiz hit 15-20 homers, batted .270-.280 and struck out only about once every 6 at bats when with us. Sano can hit more home runs but bats below .230 and strikes out once every 3 times up. No comparison. Even Dave Kingman was better.
  22. As I said in the reports as the game was being played, I can't seem to watch this team (and won't have to after yesterday unless they play Washington or on national TV (ha). What really got to me was when Larnich failed to just bunt to third where nobody was playing, after Cruz opening inning single and Dobnack throwing a meatball slider to Stewart then threw 2 great ones on the next 2 pitches to the next batter. I don't blame Rocco for all this- though his lineups seem strange to me because I disagree with them. I don't even blame Sano. This is a team meltdown- period. Why is it that other teams can take castoff relievers and make them stars (Cubs/Tampa) and we take decent pitchers and make them castoffs? It's tough to swallow. we are in the weakest division and may not even be able to finish second. Oh well. Wait til next year.
  23. If the Twins trade Berrios (as someone alluded to) then I will no longer root for them. We'll be sellers but not destroyers of the team (I hope). The team made it interesting though they still aren't hitting. I would move Donaldson down to bat 3rd or 4th at this point since he is our best/only hitter and maybe drop Cruz to 5th. Put Sano on the bench except against lefties and keep Kiriloff at first. Since it is Memorial Day (thanks to those who serve and prayers for those no longer with us), I can now firmly say that the Twins are out of the Central Division race and are 20-1 to get to a wild card. Both wild card teams may come from the East (Tor, NY or Tampa) unless a Western team (Oak/Hou) sneaks in. The Twins may still get to second in the weak Central but not to the Wild Card.
  24. I've said it before. Put the Shoe in long relief. He is fine for 3-4 innings and that's it. As far as Sano, we missed the chance to trade him when he was hot. Now all we'll get is a bucket of (used) balls.
  25. If the Twins (only) are ahead after 7 innings, stop the game and declare the Twins the winners (ha, ha- I'll bet EVERYONE wants this one).
