  1. Like I said before, Shoe would be ok when the starter doesn't have it. He can eat 3-5 innings in middle relief- depending on whether the Twins can get back into the game. Using some relievers on consecutive days when you had others available is a gamble. Last night it didn't pay off. So we move on and look towards what can be done for next year.
  2. Wrist injuries can be difficult to overcome without much rest and sometimes surgery. I say shut him down for the season and see what he can do in winter ball and/or next season. This season is over anyway and he may be too valuable for the future to risk further damage.
  3. We do not need a shortstop so the Toronto trade is out. The Cubs trade is interesting but I would want an additional player. Same with the Atlanta deal you proposed. If we don't extend Pineda (which I would choose) before the deadline, it makes sense to trade him. I still would like to explore a trade of Kepler to the Yankees for a couple of players or maybe Andujar and a prospect. The Yanks need a lefty hitter and might bite at that one.
  4. I had said that Shoe would be ok for long relief if the starter doesn't cut it. So bringing him in with the game on the line is a mistake. Bringing Alcala and Duffy in on consecutive nights was a mistake as well. So Rocco takes the blame for this one. Hopefully we can win the next 2 though the bullpen remains an issue. As for the person saying to "dump Simmons", I say NEVER, NEVER, NEVER.
  5. I think the biggest mistakes the Twins made in the off-season was 1- Letting Rosario walk- The Twins have little offense and Eddie provided a spark. 2- Not keeping Rich Hill- Replacing Hill with Happ could be a wash except that Hill has always been a good pitcher while Happ has been up and down. 3- Not signing a solid middle reliever to take May's place. Ok, they signed Colombe and he has bombed to this time but will be better from here on out (though not as a closer). They also got Robles as a "project" and he has been ok. But they didn't sign an Archie Bradley or similar who has done the job successfully. and their relievers don't strike people out which is what you need in this day and age. Signing Shoemaker was a gamble that hasn't worked though I still insist that he can be a 2-3 inning long reliever when the starter just doesn't have it that day. But injuries have hurt as well and replacements haven't been as good as advertised. So we look ahead to ????
  6. I would definitely keep Simmons and trade Donaldson if we get value for him. With money saved we could sign a good and healthy player. I'd also keep Pineda and maybe trade Polanco (again for value). As for Sano, I guess we may have no choice.
  7. IMHO you cannot count minor leaguers who have not played in the majors as part of the "big 6". Remember Gonsalves? He was our next 20 game winner (top pitching prospect for 2 years running) yet has never had success. And don't count Simmons out. You have to have a keystone to your defense.
  8. The article references the Cubs success. They were successful because they had Theo Epstein who had built the Red Son into champions and did the same with the Cubs. The Reds have good hitters and the Tigers good pitchers that bode well for their future. The Twins have a few good pieces (Berrios, Maeda and Buxton) but must keep them healthy. I would not trade Simmons or Rogers or even Robles who seems to be straightened out. Polanco, Garver, Kiriloff, Larnach and Rooker and Garrick are the future and Duffy and maybe Alcala can help. Gordon has had a nice start and Lewis is a possibility. Cruz and Donaldson and maybe Pineda (if we really want to trade him) should net us a prospect or two at the deadline. Kepler can get us some value as well. I figured he would go to the Yankees but he's not healthy right now. Sano is a big question mark as far as value goes. The rest are not going to get us much at all. It was a crap shoot with Shoemaker and we had to figure Happ as a stopgap until the prospects were "ready" (I hate that word). Colombe has been a disaster but has experience so maybe someone can give us a prospect for him. So we have to build but not totally tear down (IMHO).
  9. I voted for Buxton only but can see Berrios representing the team if Bux isn't healthy. Nobody else is even close except maybe Simmonds because "somebody" has to go.
  10. While I can see the possibility of trading Donaldson, who has underperformed for what we are paying him and doesn't stay healthy, the above trade is ludicrous and makes absolutely no sense. Why would we want a broken prospect and a CF who can't hit? Bradley had 1 decent season and that's it. All he is is a late inning defensive replacement. And we don't need a center fielder (though Buxton can't stay healthy either). And who is this DeRosa who seems to know nothing.
  11. Ortiz hit 15-20 homers, batted .270-.280 and struck out only about once every 6 at bats when with us. Sano can hit more home runs but bats below .230 and strikes out once every 3 times up. No comparison. Even Dave Kingman was better.
  12. As I said in the reports as the game was being played, I can't seem to watch this team (and won't have to after yesterday unless they play Washington or on national TV (ha). What really got to me was when Larnich failed to just bunt to third where nobody was playing, after Cruz opening inning single and Dobnack throwing a meatball slider to Stewart then threw 2 great ones on the next 2 pitches to the next batter. I don't blame Rocco for all this- though his lineups seem strange to me because I disagree with them. I don't even blame Sano. This is a team meltdown- period. Why is it that other teams can take castoff relievers and make them stars (Cubs/Tampa) and we take decent pitchers and make them castoffs? It's tough to swallow. we are in the weakest division and may not even be able to finish second. Oh well. Wait til next year.
  13. If the Twins trade Berrios (as someone alluded to) then I will no longer root for them. We'll be sellers but not destroyers of the team (I hope). The team made it interesting though they still aren't hitting. I would move Donaldson down to bat 3rd or 4th at this point since he is our best/only hitter and maybe drop Cruz to 5th. Put Sano on the bench except against lefties and keep Kiriloff at first. Since it is Memorial Day (thanks to those who serve and prayers for those no longer with us), I can now firmly say that the Twins are out of the Central Division race and are 20-1 to get to a wild card. Both wild card teams may come from the East (Tor, NY or Tampa) unless a Western team (Oak/Hou) sneaks in. The Twins may still get to second in the weak Central but not to the Wild Card.
  14. I've said it before. Put the Shoe in long relief. He is fine for 3-4 innings and that's it. As far as Sano, we missed the chance to trade him when he was hot. Now all we'll get is a bucket of (used) balls.
  15. If the Twins (only) are ahead after 7 innings, stop the game and declare the Twins the winners (ha, ha- I'll bet EVERYONE wants this one).
  16. 1- 15 seconds between pitches with noone on base. 20 seconds with a man on 2- Have a designated runner (only 1 player who cannot bat during the game) that can be used once an inning. 3- Allow managers to change their lineup in the ninth inning (only) if they desire. Example- If the 7,8 and 9 hitters are do up, the manager can choose to start with the #3 hitter then go on from there. 4- Allow catchers to block the plate on throws home. 5- Put the DH in both leagues. 6- Stop the nonsense of position players pitching in blowouts. The last bullpen pitcher needs the work and experience. 7- Change the balk rule (actually eliminate it) to allow pitchers to do anything.
  17. Dobnack should have been out of the 5th inning with no runs and maybe could have given up only 1 or 2 runs in the 7th but the Twins weren't going to win this game with no hitting. It may have been a closer game which may have changed some strategy. The time to trade Sano has passed. We might have gotten something while he was hitting but now we will get nothing. We'll be sellers at the deadline but I hope the core can remain. This team is not all that horrible.
  18. Though everyone gets super excited about speed of pitches, I would be more concerned about command and movement. Speed for a starter can only lead to arm problems. I'd be more concerned that he can put the ball where he wants to consistently and that his pitches move.
  19. A nice start after a minor league stint. Let's hope he can keep it going. As for Shoe, I'm not a big fan but he can give us 3-4 good innings of long relief when needed. Hey, we took a flyer that he could return to a decent form and he has pitched ok for 3-4 innings before imploding in each start. He's not going to be a top starter anyway. As for Happ, he's done what was expected- 3-4 good starts and 2-3 not so good. A 10-10 season at best is about all we could have expected. Maeda and Berrios are bigger disappointments at this point based on what we expected.
  20. Funny article. Thanks. But the Twins are cursed because they started going super long ball in 2019 and forgot what has been winning for them up til then. Plus they have lost some key components in the past 2 years and their replacements have not lived up to snuff except for Maeda who has slipped somewhat this year (probably back to a more normal pace for him). I guess we all somewhat over-rated the team because of what happened last year and the fact that we are fans of the team and we play in a relatively weak division.
  21. Older folks follow most rules more than younger people do. just look at who wears masks when they are supposed to vs not, etc., etc. As for the Mercedes incident, he should be fined by his team for not obeying the sign and shout from his coach and manager. Otherwise, anything goes. So what is worse, the fact that someone hits a 3-0 pitch for a homer off a position player, the fact that someone tries to beat out a bunt in the ninth inning of a no-hitter, the fact that someone steal a base when his team is winning a blowout or something else? Play the game and stop complaining. And I'm an old person (by comparison) and have played ball all my life.
  22. Sano has been much better during the past few games and capped it off with his big night. So NOW is the time to trade him. We won't get more value than right now and, if we wait, we may only wind up with a bag of (used) baseballs. As for Duffy throwing at Mercedes intentionally, ANY major league pitcher who throws a pitch behind a batter is throwing at him intentionally. Their control cannot be that bad- even for just 1 pitch. But Duffy was standing up for his team and that (unfortunately) is a part of baseball. As far as him hitting the home run, too bad, so sad. That's his job- to smack the ball- no matter who is pitching. It would have been worse had he bunted. That would have been bush.
  23. Hard to say but right now it depends on what teams would be looking for. Look, we are only less than 2 months from being a division winner. Are you going to break up the team? And we are only 8 games out of a wild card though we have to pass too many teams to get there. I would say that Kepler (to the Yankees or Mets), Rogers and Donaldson and Cruz are the ones with the highest value who are likely to get traded and would bring back decent returns. You could even throw Colume in the mix since he has experience as a closer. But I'm not quite ready to break up the team looking at next year.
  24. Right now our biggest trade chip might be Kepler. The Yankees may be looking for a center fielder if Hicks needs surgery and they also need a lefty hitter with power. The question is- what can we get from them? That will determine if Kepler gets traded. Otherwise, all free agents after the season are in play and Cruz is definitely in play for the best return if traded to a playoff team needing a DH. I don't know if Garver is a free agent after this season but, if he is not, I would never trade him. Simmonds can maybe be signed for 3 years fairly cheap and could be an important piece going forward as you gotta have a good shortstop. Keep the 3 main starters together if you can. Don't trade Pineda as he has been consistently good for us.
  25. Guys with command issues generally will not make it in the majors. Cano seems to be the best bet to try. there doesn't seem to be much available around the league but this disaster of a season is a team effort- not just the bullpen blowup.
