The Warehouse District has existed since the end of the 19th century.  Like most neighborhoods that age it has changed over the years from its roots as the main commercial hub in the city, with different eras and vibes.  It's just absolutely ludicrous and ahistorical to suggest it was some sort of blank spot on the map until the 1990s.  Read a book.

Yes it was full of warehouses, but it was not the entertainment hub it is now, that is my point.  The stadiums revitalized that area which was badly needed.  I parked where Target Field now sits, and it was not a comfortable after dark once you passed Hennepin Avenue.

gosh, musk is not playing a ball game. you can't compare that. when I started talking about this money the players get. I really didn't think anybody anywhere would agree. somebody making super millions of dollars playing a game. I am very price conscious with everything but when it comes to sports it's crazy money out there. ridiculous absurd and we have to pay the price okay?

So the average income family lets say 100k working should help donate to a player making half a billion for ten years you like that? Why? Its about who pays this very kind player Jeffers 24 mil Twins if they don't he goes elsewhere. Since 1976 players move instead of stay home but no player is home anymore. Its a money grab. Boycott this nonsense appropriate pay would happen.

You're looking for Town Ball, not professional baseball.

You can start the boycott by refusing to ever discuss the Twins or MLB ever again.

This is giving way too much credit to one aspect of a revitalized city.

After the mid century white flight suburbanization of major American cities, we've seen steady reversal of the trend for 20+ years all around the country, not just in cities with major league baseball stadiums.

The retrofitting of old warehouses into nice loft apartments is independent of the presence of the Minnesota Timberwolves.

it's like paying $50 for a loaf of bread. why would you want to do that? players are laughing all the way to the bank. Tori Hunter could see this so he would buy tickets for underprivileged children.

I'm not sure why you're bothering at this point.  They literally have no idea.

The 'give the billionaires everything for free' crowd is impossible to argue with because those people already know they are taking an indefensable position even before they decide to publicly defend them.

Fangraphs projects 3/45 or so.......

Would you do that, IF you think that's the ONE big signing of the year? Likely next two years?

No, which is why I'm more than happy to have him either accept or reject a QO.

That seems right in line with a one year $23 million contract. Does he bet on himself thinking a good year can help him get larger than 2/$22? Or does he take the guaranteed contract.

And if that's the one big signing of the offseason, then the Twins payroll remains pathetic and everyone would have been right about Tom Pohlad being nothing but a used car salesman.

This my concern. I think it is a reasonable assumption the Twins will add one position player to a sizable contract including Jeffers. If this is true, there are other players I would rather have than Jeffers.

You’re wrong. Fine Line and First Avenue have been in business since the mid 1980s. Target Center opened in 1990, after Block E was demolished. Target Field and Mayo Clinic Square completed the gentrification of the Warehouse District but it definitely didn’t create it.

Block E was demolished at the same time as construction began on Target Center, you don't think they were connected projects.  So there were two places, now there are over 35 establishments.  And the bars and restaurants started opening after Target Center was built.  There was virtually nothing after Hennepin Ave from 7th Ave up to Washington.  If you spent any time in that area in the early 90's you would know that this is what was happening.

So you were a planner for the City of Minneapolis and have the only answer.

Not everybody is in the all or nothing crowd.  There is nuance to what is involved in getting a sports stadium built in todays environment.  Everybody just wants a billionaire to write a check for everything, that is not reality until all governments, state and local, decide they are not going to subsidize any more stadiums.  I live in the real world, not in fantasy land.

Those two survive to this day (plus the Gay 90s). Loon Cafe opened in 1982, Glueks in 1979.

I like how the film Purple Rain featured Prince and Morris Day hanging out in textile factories and and performing in industrial laundromats every night.

You have identified correlation. You have not identified causation.

Saying the welfare queen billionaires getting handouts is why people decided back to urban neighborhoods is just not the case. Downtown Minneapolis/North Loop would look much the same without Target Center/Field in terms of restaurants, population density, etc.

Actually, if you read further in the article, teams DO forfeit a pick if they sign a free agent who had received (and declined) a QO.

There is value to the public subsidy, now is it break even, it is difficult to measure.  But there was no warehouse district before Target Center and Target Field were built.  What kind of tax revenues flow from that area on a yearly basis and all the other ancillary activities.  That area was an absolute dump before the stadiums were built.

I get the argument that people don't want to use public dollars for stadiums, but it not a fair argument to say that there is no value to the public.

if I have this correct, I'm not sure. I think the entire 1.6 billion to build the latest Yankee stadium came from the public and around that stadium is not really good area either. most of the people that live near the stadium couldn't afford hardly to buy a loaf of bread yet. they're paying for this stadium but I don't know how far reaching the taxes were to pay for the stadium. think of businesses. they have buildings people come in. hopefully they are successful and people will buy their products or services and the general public is not obligated to pay for their place of business and neither should a sports team ask the public to pay for their place of business so they can make millions of dollars. I think it was $135 million that came from taxes or was that the ownership that paid that amount? I do believe that Hennepin county had a a 0.15 of a penny went to the building of the stadium which is much better than most places. as far as public paying for it goes most likely.
