Garrett Acton Placed On Injured List By Twins With Shoulder Strain

The door is open for Luis Garcia's second chance this season.

The Minnesota Twins placed right-hander reliever Garrett Acton on the 15-day injured list with a strained right shoulder and promoted Garcia from Triple-A St. Paul. The 39-year-old Garcia, also a right-handed reliever, recently signed with the Twins after being released by the New York Mets. Right-handed reliever Zak Kent was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster for Garcia.

The Twins acquired Acton from the Miami Marlins on April 2 after he had been designated for assignment after not making the Opening Day roster. He was called up from St. Paul on April 5 and made four appearances, compiling a 2.70 ERA in 6⅔ innings, allowing four hits and three walks while striking out nine.

Garcia had a 7.11 ERA in six appearances for the Mets before being DFA'd. He signed a minor-league contract with the Twins on April 21 and pitched twice for St. Paul, allowing two hits, including a homer, with no walks and a strikeout in two innings.

Kent made two early-season appearances out of the Twins' bullpen, allowing five runs (two earned) on four hits with five walks and two strikeouts. If he passes through waivers, he could report back to St. Paul.

I know he's a recent pickup and it's only been a SSS, but I've been somewhat impressed with Acton as a middle man option. I hope he's not out long. 

Why not Garcia at this point? But I do wonder why not someone like Brebia instead and let Morris complete the transition to a high velocity short arm? Just in case they need him in the rotation I guess.

Don't understand what the end game is with someone like Garcia. Zero upside whether the goal is to 'contend' this season or find a long-term piece for the pen.

You're not wrong... However, I'm looking at the Saints pitching stats this morning and it's not pretty. They're keeping Zebby stretched out as a starter for now even though he's destined for the bullpen. Raya's numbers are terrible as a reliever. Rojas has upside, but we also saw his control is pretty wild at this point in his career.

I'm a little surprised it wasn't Rojas, but this is probably just kicking a decision down the road until Abel comes back and a more consequential decision needs to be made.

I'd keep Rojas on the starter track at AAA, no need to force him into a long relief role in the majors. He's already been aggressively promoted to AAA, give the kid some time. Just because the MLB squad is a disaster doesn't mean they should alter the plan on him. When it's a prospect like Andrew Morris or John Klein? Sure, move them to the pen and see what happens. Festa should return as a reliever.

I haven't lost faith in Zebby as a starter quite yet, we need some options for starters because you know more injuries are coming to the rotation eventually. Maybe later in the season they can kick around moving him to the pen full-time if his numbers are a starter are still rough, but I think he's going to rebound from his current AAA stats.
