Dozier can be seen as disappointing & not get an arguement BUT he's one of the top rated 2B UZR-wise & is on pace for a 14 HR 14 SB rate. May be the best 2B in the past several years.

Which isn't saying much. Dozier can still bat much better. He needs to raise his .233/.314 line. Parmelee is hitting .233/.315 with one more HR. Dozier's batting needs to get much better.

I heard Bremer the other day say something to the effect that Dozier has been "stymied" in the .230s. While this is basically true, since June 1, Dozier has been an effective offensive player. He has drawn 18 walks and struck out only 15 times in that period and had a .389 OBP in June, which is very good. His OPS was .902 and he is 4-12 with three more walks so far in July. I would say that he has stepped it up. Parm has taken about a half-step forward, with a few good games and a number of bad ones. Give him the at-bats this year and hopefully we'll know what to expect in 2014.

Three years of this now.... Why isn't Gardenhire ever held accountable for this kind of performance? Not his fault?

Other teams at least have regular pick off plays, squeeze bunts, hit and runs, and generally try to put pressure on the other team.

Gardenhire is playing for the three-run homer and shut-down relief pitching. And, it ain't working. For the third year in a row.

Going to get monotonous real fast as the year winds on.

If nothing else, I think that's the first time I've ever seen someone criticize Gardy for waiting for the three run homer and not for playing small ball.

If Gardenhire is playing for the 3 run home run then he ought to be fired. Never enough on base, no one with power to bring them in if there is.

Dozier has actually been really good with the bat since May 28th. Since then...

34gms 31 starts

30-108 (.278BAve)18runs 6doubles 6HR 17rbi (.500slgg) 17k 19bb 2hbp (.395OBP)

Dont think he's one of the problems...BUT he needs to keep this up

Also hitting lefties really well for a .300/.410/.520 clip in 62PAs

Lets keep this thread on the main topic: evaluating the players performance at the midpoint of the season. If someone wants to start a thread on Gardy's in-game choices, that could be a valuable thread that people could continue to post on going forward.

Thanks.

Back to the players. Here is a link to what each player did in June:

Minnesota Twins 2013 Batting / Hitting Statistics - ESPN

In order of OPS, best to worse, here's the list: Dozier, Arcia, Plouffe, Mauer, Morneau, Clete, Doumit, Parmelee, Hicks, Willingham. So yes, Dozier is definitely trending up.

It is encouraging to me that the top 3 guys on the list could each be around for a long time if he continues to improve.

Who's impressed, who hasn't. The hasn't is the easiest. Willingham's done squat, and Parmalee hasn't done anything to impress me either. Doumit is either hot or cold, so not good. Hicks a big disappointment. Diamond, Worley and Duensing have been disappointments to me also. I've never cared much for Roenicke. And for some reason I've not had confidence in Burton last year or this.

I'm softening my stance with Plouffe a little bit. He might make it. Dozier is learning and showing some signs that he may be a late bloomer. At least it looks like he's improving little by little. Florimon is just so so. Carroll has purposely been shut down way to much for him to have an impact, not his fault.

I'm satisfied with the play of the M & M boys, though Joe's k's are a bit concerning. Most impressive for me is Fien. Liked him last season and this year he's done an outstanding job. And I do like Deduno, fun to watch him pitch. I still think Pelfrey will be the best 2nd half pitcher for us. Thielbar is rather exciting since he came up, and Arcia is a treat and will only get better. Perkins has been for the most part solid.

Posted

Clete Thomas: He's filled in nicely I'd say. Not anything extroardinary, but solid.

Mauer: Not many complaints. Maybe just his amount of strikeouts.

Arcia: Young, flashes power. Needs to make more consistently good contact, and he has to take better routes and get better jumps on fly balls in the field.

Willingham: I'd say he's been a huge dissapointment. He isn't clutch, or productive, and skies the ball way to often.

Doumit: Absolutely terrible. Not a fan of his work at all, just like Willingham.

Morneau: I really like what he's done. Not a ton of power (starting to come now), but production/average/and steady in the field.

Hicks: In his time here, besides a handful of games, he hasn't shown MLB readiness.

Dozier: Good in the field, besides that little 5 game power surge, not good enough in the batters box. Has to start hitting for a better average. Not sure if he's a long term solution.

Florimon/Escobar: Not productive at the plate, fill-in player hopefully.

Parmelee: Knows his abilities in the field and uses them well. Not a good hitter.

Plouffe: When he's been here, he's hit for power, and a respectable average. I like where he is headed as a player. Maybe back at SS when Sano is in the majors?

ftfy and fify, what do they mean?

Fixed that for you or fixed it for you. Really not a fan of people doing that.

Thought I'd take a look just at OPS for April, May, June (not definitive, I know but I wanted to see how players are trending).

Arcia -- upward each month

Carroll -- down badly each month

Doumit -- upward each month (although June was just slightly better than May)

Dozier -- down slightly in May from April but a BIG upward jump in June

Escobar -- good April; horrible May; bounce back in June (but not far enough)

Florimon -- acceptable April & May; Horrible June (has got to do it with the glove cuz the bat isn't there)

Hicks -- horrible April; better May and June (but June inconclusive due to injury)

Mauer -- mediocre April; great May; fall off in June but above April

Morneau -- .5 to .75 upward trend each month

Parmelee -- nice improvement from April to May but then a slight drop off in June

Willingham -- off significantly in May from April and then another slight decline in June

So, I guess I'd say I'm happy with the trends for Arcia; Dozier; Doumit; Morneau and thought Hicks was headed in the right direction before his injury

I'm okay with the trends for Mauer & Parmelee but would hope they bounce back from downward trending Junes

Disappointed but hoping it comes back some more for Escobar

And do not like the way things are going for Willingham & Florimon & Carroll

Obviously this looks at a player's performance only with regard to himself not compared to other players and does not look at defense at all. But at least some of the younger players are showing some improvement the more pitching they see. That's a positive sign for me.

As far as Mauer goes, I'd like to point out that, yes, his June was a dropoff from May...but it kind of had to be, considering his May OPS was over 1.000. If his June OPS was his season OPS, he'd be 3rd for catchers right now. Funny thing is, that is where he stands, currently, right now for catchers anyway.

His OPS in June was .849 -- so it was below his career average (as were his OBP and BA). Not a big concern but I'd like to see it go up instead of down in July.

Given the size of sample in any single month isn't change in data likely due to random variation rather than a trend up or down?

It is true that younger players will improve and trend up. We can hope that Dozier is that case. I don't think it will be seen by comparing monthly data. The first data that might become reliable is strikeout and walk rates. If his walk rate shown in June continues through July, that would be encouraging.

It's a pretty run-of-the-mill bit of forum humor that's been used as long as the quote function has existed, no super powers required.
