So with the lack of coaches being hired, does that mean that the guys the teams REALLY want are still in the playoffs?

I imagine Johnson is #1 and then coaches will fall. But every team probably thinks he's the coach for them. He's gonna get paid.

Ha, I hope ALL of them don't, because I think some of them are clearly more dysfunctional than Johnson would like.

Is it just me or is anyone else confused as to why Arthur Smith is getting HC interviews? He took the odd path of being a TE coach before becoming an OC. Had a great season as OC with the Titans, but anyone can look back and see that was all Derek Henry. He then used that to springboard to the HC job in Atlanta, where this 'offensive' coach turned a perennially average offense into one of the worst offenses in the league for three straight years (wow he's gone, guess what, their offense is average again).

Then after getting fired, he goes to Pittsburg and runs the least inspiring offense in the league. But not only is Pittsburg not firing him, he's getting HC interviews. Or maybe Pittsburg is hoping he gets hired away so they don't have to fire him? Either way, I don't get it, am I the crazy one?

I don't get it either. The old boys club is still strong in the NFL is, legitimately, my best guess.

Jets interviewed Flores yesterday

It's really hard for me seeing the Jets, Bears or Raiders going back to a defensive HC.

Not a lot of good looking offensive guys though so I suppose one of those teams might bite.

Yes you are crazy -- for not spelling Pittsburgh with an H at the end? 🙂

Mike Tice came up as a Tight Ends coach, and Tice was... not good.

Not sure who else fits that bill.

It is strange, though it is just the Bears and Jets, and they have interviewed 17 and 16 candidates a piece. Still, he wouldn't be in my top 30 HC candidates.

I can see the Jets doing it, I agree about the other two. I think they are the only team that has a real chance of hiring Flores, there were some league rumors about the Jets hiring him and then taking McCown to be their OC and even Grigson (our current assistant GM) to be their GM. How Grigson would get another HC job after bungling the Colts with Luck and not being able to draft with the Vikings would be baffling, but a Flores/McCown combo makes a lot of sense to me.

Dan Campbell.

Seems to me that usually the guys who came up coaching the OL or TE, want the old school ground and pound system. Obviously Campbell is something else.

Reports say that Aaron Glenn has his choice between the Jets or Saints job. If he gets the Jets job then I think Flores is back.

Betting favorite for Cowboys job is Schottenheimer… yikes.

Both of those would be great!

I don't see it on PFT, but just got a notification that the Bears are getting Ben Johnson.

I'm optimistic that this really hurts the Lions, while also optimistic that he might be a better offensive mind than actual head coach. I hope this doesn't work out for either of those teams.

Given how quickly this came together today…. Would it surprise anyone if Tom Brady rescinded their offer after seeing first hand how awful that trick play was in the 4th quarter? Brady was mortified with that call.

Maybe, but makes me think he probably had already decided on the Bears.

Caleb Williams vs, Aiden O'Connell? Kirk Cousins? No idea who's going to be QB there, but it's not going to be pretty.

This right here.  If you're Ben Johnson, why would you want any of the openings other than Chicago and maybe the Jags?  The QB situations are pretty terrible everywhere else.

he's the next Scott Linehan.

Linehan never had this kind of anticipation to be a HC. He left Minnesota and went to Miami, even while Tice remained the HC, because he was mad that nobody wanted to hire him after the 2005 season.

Not that I think Johnson is a sure thing. I could see it being a disaster, or maybe something like Mike McDaniel in Miami. Might still be able to call a good offensive game, but not being able to run a functional team.

And if he's taking his queues from Dan Campbell as to how to be a HC, and that's a strong possibility, it could be  a problem. Those two do not seem to have anything close to the same personality; nobody has the same personality as Campbell. If he tries to be a hard-nosed-but-softie-but-still-Alpha type, I think it's going to come off as phoney.

It was probably down to the Bears and Raiders giving him their final bids this weekend, and he probably wanted the Bears job most. Caleb Williams has an elite skillset he can work with and their roster isn't terrible, while the Raiders have nothing at and a worse roster, and may have to trade up in an underwhelming 2025 QB class. I would guess that was the tiebraker, not the Raiders/Brady overreacting to one play call.

This makes sense.

The Jets are trying to finalize a deal with Glenn, so it seems Flores will return as it appears he isn't a finalist for the Jags job.

Rabbit hole conspiracy alert!

I was thinking that it's kind of odd that the Raiders haven't reached out to Mike McCarthy. They've interviewed top coordinators Ben Johnson, Aaron Glen and Todd Monkin, but otherwise it seems they've focused on former head coaches, interviewing Steve Spagnolo, Robert Saleh, Pete Carroll, Vance Joseph, and Ron Rivera. Reports also said they have at least talked to Bill Belichick and didn't interview Mike Vrabel only because he already told Tom Brady he was going back to New England.

So why not McCarthy? He seems like a pretty good fit considering all of the experienced coaches they're looking at.

Conspiracy theory: Tom Brady already has Aaron Rodgers lined up as the LV QB in 2025 and Rodgers and McCarthy didn't get along at the end of their time in Green Bay.
