Some teams do it better than others extracting value out of their players. KC traded 33 year old Joe Thuney with 1 year $15 million cap hit to the Bears for a 2026 4th round pick.

It frustrates me to see Thuney go for exactly what we got for half a season of a mediocre LT in Cam Robinson, who was every bit as bad as Darnold those final two games.

Thuney is good value for the Bears for sure.  Even if he's on the down slope that's an easy swap.

I agree with your overall point, but to be clear: the Chiefs offensive line just got a lot worse with that move.  And they have a day 3 pick to show for it.

I wonder if KAM would've done more of this stuff if not for the ownership mandate not to strip the ship for parts and blow it up.

Like trading hunter....

This is trading Kepler a year early.... Which is great if you've already won it all...

I definitely am on board with dealing guys when the time is right.  When Cousins was hurt...Hunter should've been traded.  Everything not bolted down should've been traded.

But I also think ownership of the Vikings is heavily pressuring KAM not to be that guy.  I have no proof of that, but that's what I believe.  So in that sense, I do agree the Vikings missed an opportunity with Hunter.

Thuney is a salary dump, but he's a still a damn good player to get for a 4th.

What did you want them to do? Trade Darnold before the trade deadline?

Right, the time to make these trades wasn't last year or this offseason, because there are no trades to be made this offseason. It was the prior half decade that they left vets to age and deteriorate on their rosters because they were so terrified of being 7-9 instead of 9-7.

I agree with your first paragraph, but as you say, I'm not sure the owners do.

I believe we gave up a conditional 5th and received a conditional 7th for Robinson.

https://www.vikings.com/news/cam-robinson-trade-tackle-jaguars

I forgot about the 7th, but the conditions were most likely hit to make it a 4th round pick:

Quote

In addition to Robinson, the Vikings will receive a conditional 2026 seventh-round pick that can go away based on playing time, while the Jaguars will receive a conditional 2026 fifth-round selection that can become a fourth-rounder based on playing time.

Robinson only missed about 60 snaps against the Bears and then played the entire rest of the season, so in all likelihood the Jags got our 2026 4th. So in both trades the other team got a future 4th - one for a pedestrian LT and one for a still very good LG.

Should they not have had a LT last year? What did you want then to do instead? Because how many LT were available?

I want day trading analytics Kwesi to make something happen. I’ve moved on from Darnold. The only thing I want the beat reporters to dig in on is did Kwesi make a valid effort finding a tag and trade partner? If he did, then I’m happy. Sucks it didn’t happen, but at least he tried. If he didn’t make every effort to pull it off, then my pitchfork is directly aimed at him.

Yeah, that's the price you're going to pay when you're desperate mid-season. Lucky if there are any LTs available at all.

I would sure hope the team was looking.  I'd also have some serious issues if that wasn't even pursued.

Your pitchfork is clearly already aimed at him. I guess I don't understand why anyone would think he's not doing the bare minimum right now when it is the most active part of the season for a GM. If Darnold could have been tagged and traded with certainty, he would have been. Any GM would have done it, not just the ours.

Obviously and unequivocally, the answer to 'Can the Vikings tag and still trade Darnold' is either 'No' or 'Not right now.' And both answers would require the Vikings to let him walk.

I would have preferred to stick with the backups they had on the roster, Quessenberry has been a fine backup in the past and had been the swing tackle for the past two years. I understand that wouldn't have been a popular move, but Cam Robinson is an overrated player whom Jacksonville had benched for Walker Little and it would have been hard for Quessenberry to be worse in those final two games (Robinson gave up 21 pressures against the Lions/Rams!). Another move that was thrown around was Brandel to LT and Risner to his natural position of LG.

That's fair. I just don't have an issue with losing picks after round three as a rule. It's like fifty percent or less they matter.

I was leading the squad of people talking about how bad he was at the end, but maybe the league got even more sour about it than I expected too.

With a bad draft and so many needy teams, I really though the guy could do better than 1 year at 25M.

For the record....I don't want him back at any price.  Even 1 year 5M and I'd pass just because I don't want to create a QB competition.

It would say a lot about their confidence in McCarthy, and be enough for me to fire the GM if they don't believe in him at this point.
