Pelf to DL; Hernandez recalled..

It's at least two starts, possibly three. Hernandez is not and never will be a capable major league starter. That much was plain in his last stint. He got shelled in AAA and is the worst of the five guys down there. This will not go well. I can't believe they don't have contingency plans in case of injury.

I think the contingency play is Swarzak or Pressly, bur they were burned up yesterday

Relievers have train their body/arms for short stints. Relieving and starting are different. Relieving you are only throwing 20 pitches, starting your goal is to throw 100. They train differently and asking a reliever to turn on a dime and start is asking a lot. Swarzak and Duensing are more long relievers that go 3 innings or so, but when they've had spot starts it hasn't gone too well.

I completely believe this is an incompetent move. Albers could have been called up to pitch this game and might as well send Walters back down in favor of Gibson while you're at it. I realize it is a short term thing, but why call-up a AAA filler over a guy that might actually give your team a chance to win long term? If I was Albers and got passed up I would be frustrated as hell. This has been another example of the Twins terrible handling of young players. I get that Gibson will probably get the call after this start, but it just doesn't make it any better.

As a half dozen other people have already mentioned, there are 40 man considerations in play here. You don't just throw players of value away in a situation like this. Anyone saying we should waive Hernandez doesn't understand the value a AAAA starter stashed in the minors has. You know, like for when your scheduled starter hurts his back shagging fly balls...

Wouldn't want Pedro as anything more than an MLB 5th starter/spot starter for injury at this time. But a player of that caliber (especially a lefty) has value.

Maybe Gibson makes the Saturday start instead of Hernandez. It's possible. That would give Walters one start to overcome his bad start and Pelfrey would take Walters rotation spot after next Friday.

If not, then Gibson getting the call for next Saturday is just a one start thing too. Of course, if he pitches on Tuesday, he likely wouldn't be able to start on Saturday, unless they limit him t 50 pitches or something.

I'm fine with Pedro on the 40-man. There are plenty of of other options to DFA. Wait for it.... wait for it..... Butera!!!! SPEEED!!!

Sarcasm Alert!!!

The real tragedy here isn't who is being called up. The real tragedy is that Pelfrey will lose 2 or 3 more starts in which he could have proven himself so that we could've gotten a C- or D+ prospect at the end of July!

As long as this is a one day promotion for Hernandez, this isnt a killer. Replace him with a player for MIA (WRamirez?? as they didnt have any idea what to do with him).

Gibson was scheduled for TUE or WED in ROC. MN isnt smart enough to bump back a couple starters to get Gibson on his scheduled date & will use that as the excuse why its not him.

The move SHOULD be Hernandez today, demoted after game for Gibson who starts TUE in Miami with other pitcher pushed back a day & start again with Correia Wed & Diamond Thur, but they wont cause this is Terry Ryan.

Hernandez gets a start to: a) showcase him as trade bait (somebody needs a LHP), B) prove himself as functional to serve as the replacement for Duensing, or c) just to "hold a place" until Pelfrey returns. Maybe all three.

Easy: DFA Hernandez, call-up Albers.

That would back Rochester into a corner. You lose both guys that could start today and then back that up with potentially taking Gibson or Worley. I get that its about the Twins, but why do that when the result is probably pretty similar?

I agree, Gibson will take Pelf's spot. Next DFA could be DeVries in my opinion.

This is the time. Hernando will start today and Gibby will take Pelfreys spot in rotation. The wrting is on the wall. The other options people are talking about are downright silly. I could even see Gibby pitching on on his regular four days rest and pushing everyone back a day. Would make the most sense instead of pitching him on a weeks rest next Saturday.

Twins/Ryan played their hand today that Albers is NOT next in line & isnt a serious contender for this staff as it woulda been an easy transaction.

Why he offerred that comment to 'tweak' Gibson is still baffling.

Gibson is on the 40 man, so no need to DFA someone to call him up. It's been said already, but they needed an emergency starter which eliminated Gibson and Albers from the list. I wouldn't be surprised if Gibson gets the call and starts here in a few days. I also suspect Albers goes on the 40 man if the Twins can trade Pelfrey or Correia at the deadline.

Hernandez shouldn't be casually tossed away like that. There's a good chance he ends up being a nice bullpen arm.

Really, I don't get the criticisms here. You don't call up Albers for one start. He's in a groove, let him keep doing his thing. When there's a permanent spot open in the rotation, give him a real shot.

IMO, the real criticism is Ryan's quote that Albers is next in line. If he doesnt offer that up AND this is a one day promotion for Hernandez, their isnt as much complaining.

I havent gotten a good explanation for all the head games that Ryan is playing with Gibson. He wasnt available for today, so thats fine....but he should be up for his next start without being screwed with.

Ryan's statement was baffling, that's for sure.

Hernandez shouldnt be anywhere close to a MLB team. Hes horrible to say the least! I mean he was dreadful when he was on the Twins and in ROC he has a 4.50 ERA lol. This guy just doesnt know how to pitch. He throws softer than I do(Kinda kidding but I wouldnt be suprised). Every pitch he throws is a meatball, the only good games he has is when he gets lucky when every hard hit goes right to someone.

He better just pitch this game because Gibson couldnt, but right after it they should send him down and call up Gibson and just stick him in the roto and get his career going. I mean Hernandez did absolutely nothing to earn this start. Hes got a 4.50 ERA in ROC while Gibson has a 3.01 and he throws alot harder.

The move is easy....

First demote Pedro immediately & do one of 2 things!!!

Activate Wilkin Ramirez from rehab & have an extra player. You can then start Kyle on TUE in AAA & have him go 50-70 pitches & be ready to go on SAT. You then get 4 games with an extra position player.

The other....start Kyle on TUE on his normal day & move every starter back a day....or go Correia on Tue & Gibson on Wed w/Diamond moved back to THUR.....easy moves.

Will be interesting tho as Aaron Hicks starts his rehab on TUE. Their isnt a move that MN wants to make, so will they wait the week or so on Aaron & option him??? Will they actually release/DFA Wilkin Ramirez or option out Escobar or a 13th P. IF a P, who goes as all RP have a legit arguement to stay (IMO they want Thielbar to get give up some runs to make it him).

I get this now, but I originally thought this was a 15-day deal, which could give Albers a real chance to show what he can do against MLB hitters. It was on his turn in the rotation, and on merit alone, he deserved the shot.

But I also get that Hernandez has value. So, as a temporary move this makes sense.

Hernandez goes out and puts us in a position to win. 5 IP, 2 R.

Gibson to start Saturday.

Another case of Ryan clearly not knowing what he is doing...

They got away with one today, Hernandez was tipping on a Walters-esque performance through much of the game, but it worked out.

Thank god it's finally time to see Gibson.
