He may be the worst hitting 1B in the league where Kirilloff has been one of our better hitters. Santana, in my opinion, is clearly over the hill. His defense is not so much better than Kirilloffs as to make him a regular starter. He has been nearly an automatic out. So, the question was, "How much more time does Carlos Santana have left?" I would hope very little. When injured players start to return, Santana should be one of the first to be let go. Congrats on a very good career, but it should be over before June. And he can take Rocco with him. Time left -- a long, long, long, long, long... time.
big dog Verified Member Posted April 24, 2024 Posted April 24, 2024 I would compare him to Tony Bautista (2006), except Tony was a lot better than what we've seen from Carlos so far. Tony lasted 50 games.

My prediction is playing time will decrease but will still be on team until August. Unfortunately I agree with you. The FO is determined to keep their blunders on the team and even playing a lot. Then blame Rocco for the results.

But even for me 1B isn't a position where you worry about defense, you are concerned about production. Twins said they signed Santana mainly for his defense & plan for him to play every day. I'm a firm believer in Kiriloff, Miranda & Julien at 1B so I was completely against signing & locking (or any other capacity) Santana at 1B. Santana IMO was a very unnecessary risk & waste of money from the beginning. I'd DFA Santana a long time ago but I'm afraid we are stuck w/ him knowing this FO. Miranda, (it’s early) is hitting ONE point higher than he did in his “injury plagued ‘23” ….. he’s at .212 with an OBP of .257 and OPS+ of 72, is NOT THE ANSWER. I have complete faith in Julien hitting eventually ……….Miranda - NOT! That’s just me ……serious doubts he’s a major league hitter. Santana in February - supposed to pinch hit some - late defensive replacement - platoon from right side of the plate - exceptional defender. His roll has been expanded due to the left handed hitters injuries or Wallner’s zero performance. “Gotta play Santana” in the left handed side box due to nobody else available. ……he had a couple hard hit balls for outs Monday & a double last night. My concern is his non-production from right side! ………Larnach - Lee - maybe Wallner help displace Santana - Kirilloff at 1B - and all is good in a month? Vlad Guerrero dropped a chest high throw at 1B and it lead to 3 runs and sunk a good start by Gausman. Defense kind of matters all over the diamond - particularly at the most active spot other than catcher. 1B can be slow, not necessarily athletic, …….can’t suck!

Irrational beliefs in the face of all evidence: 1. The earth is flat 2. Santana was signed to be the 1st baseman against lefties. Riverbrian, JD-TWINS and Mike Sixel 2 1

JD-TWINS Verified Member Posted April 25, 2024 Posted April 25, 2024 He’s supposed to be a RH platoon guy at 1B - late innings defense - RH pinch hitter. Wallner disappearing and the left side of infield going down, along with Kepler - Larnach - Lee being hurt……..they didn’t have enough bats and not enough LH bats. He’s been forced into essentially everyday action. Larnach can DH - Martin in LF some v. RH pitching to get Kirilloff at 1B - if Correa comes back Castro can go to LF as a lefty bat, Kepler in RF & Larnach as DH along with Kirilloff at 1B. Just gotta have a little more patience and things should change. Unless Miranda starts hitting about .333 in a big hurry, I don’t see Santana going anywhere.

Pretty much everyone assumed Wallner would be in LF - Correa would be at SS - Castro would be freed up to play wherever & able to DH from the left side if Larnach were not on the roster. Some Castro in CF with Buxton at DH as well. All with Kirilloff at 1B v. RH pitching.

Line them up... who plays against right handers and who plays against left handers. Don't worry about the catcher position... but I want to see the other 8 spots in the lineup. If you don't mind.

Humor me here...explain to me how Wallner being on or off the club is related in any way to Santana's status as the regular first baseman. RpR 1
