Maybe the bats need to try leading the pitchers out of the depths instead of "responding" to the pitchers' troubles by going silent.

 

It has always been my assumption that leadership on this team would have to come from the line-up not from the pitching staff. It's time to see that in action.

You are right. Hitting has everything to do with leadership, how the pitcher is doing, and trying hard. They have it in them to hit, they just aren't being leaders right now. Cliché much?

The Braves have been playing with their lineup some, based on whether or not they're giving BJ Upton a day off. As he had a day off Sunday, he may not get one this series, but this is the typical RHP lineup:

 

1. Simmons, SS

2. Heyward, RF

3. Upton, LF

4. Freeman, 1B

5. McCann, C

6. Upton, CF

7. Uggla, 2B

8. Francisco, 3B

9. Pitcher

 

The Braves have used 34 different batting lineups this season so far, so it's hard to nail down what the lineup will look like for sure, especially with BJ Upton and Uggla getting more days off and Chris Johnson hitting well enough that he may play a game or two, despite being on the wrong side of the platoon for this series.

Anyone crying for a minor shakeup?

 

Hernandez should go, for sure. Pelfry should have a short leash. Who do we bring up, Walters, Deduno, Gibson.

 

Hicks needs to go to AAA and play everyday and just...play, where he can';t hurt us. Yes, Clete Thomas is not the best best but let him try. Send out Parmelee to play everyday at first, and bring up Benson. Give those two guys a chance.

 

Maybe it is time to replace Dozier. Bring up additional bench bat Collabero, perhaps?

 

How do we make roster spots? 60-day Mastro and Wood. Send Butera packing (Herrrman and, looks like Pinto, are suitable backups...even Lehmann could go into the fold as well mas Drew.

 

It doesn't mean that Parmelee and Dozier and Hicks can't come back (or Hendriks, for that matter). But what is here is not working. We have to play Carroll as long as he can stand-up and hit. Morneau needs to play his way to a long-term contract somewhere. The Twins can afford to have Doumit and Willingham sucking up space, but not Dozier and Hicks besides.

 

Heavne only knows how the rotation will fare, but must look ahead to 2014 AFTER mid-July. Before then, see if any of the AAA tryouts we gave last year are worthy of hanging onto come next season, when we can rotate in the May and Meyer and Hermsen around Correia, Worley, Diamond and Gibson.

Two things need to happen, decent starting pitching, and scoring some runs. Without both, we could hit double digits in this lossing string. This road trip is going to tell alot about the future for some of these guys.

I have no objection to making some changes, but let's make them on actual performance this year - which means Benson stays in Rochester. If you need an outfielder to give Hicks a chance to work on his game in AAA, then you call up Thomas or Richardson. I just can't justify calling up an outfielder who is hitting below .200 and is currently in a slump at AAA, even if he used to be a highly rated prospect.

 

I think Colabello should get a shot, but unless he can play the outfield (which I think they are assessing) there is no room for him at the moment. Unless he can play middle infield (which he has never done) you can't sub him for Dozier.

They're inching closer to being sellers at the deadline for sure but hopefully that prompts some interesting shake ups. Wouldn't mind seeing Cabello, Thomas, and Gibson up and Butera let go. Hopefully Willingham ups his trade value soon, Morneau too though I'd love to see him re-signed. Benson can't have much appeal anymore with Hicks, Arcia, Parmelee, Buxton, and perhaps others showing much more promise in the OF.

Interesting that they dropped BJ to 8th, and Laird is Teheran's personal catcher, so that is to be expected.

The three Twins starters vs. the Braves career:

Correia – 11 GP, 7 GS, 41 IP, 3.51 ERA, 1.56 WHIP, 5.9 k/9, 1.35 k/bb

Pelfrey – 16 GP, 15 GS, 86 IP, 5.65 ERA, 1.74 WHIP, 4.6 k/9, 1.16 k/bb

Worley – 6 GP, 4 GS, 22.2 IP, 3.57 ERA, 1.63 WHIP, 7.5 k/9, 1.36 k/bb

 

Each has some previous experience against the Braves, though each is a small sample size, of course.

Ryan Doumit is out of the Twins' lineup for the second straight day Monday.

 

Doumit is still dealing with some soreness following a collision at home plate on Saturday. Consider him day-to-day.
