Good. The lineup looks like a disaster with a collection of extremely low ceiling vets. Buxton, Correa, Miranda, bathroom break. The starting 2B and 1B are out and the team's best hitting prospect, who can play both spots, is going to sit in AAA because there's somehow STILL no room for him? How many injuries will it take to see Julien, let alone the rest of the young hitters?

Larnach, Gordon...those guys can hit too. farmer crushes lefties. Solano hit lefties like he's Arraez, so these guys platoon pretty well until the two guys who were a little behind make their debut. I think you're overly pessimistic about the lineup. But beyond that, it's easier to run out a vet like Castro for a couple of weeks until Polanco comes back (a top 5 offensive 2B, BTW) then to jump a guy like Julien 2 levels just because he looked good in spring training.

but this is about Coulombe. He's a fringe-y LHP who isn't elite against lefties, and is just ok against righties. Can't really be counted on to throw multiple innings, and is solidly behind Thielbar (who has been great) and Moran (who has been better than people realize and already thrown almost as many innings in a Twins uniform as Coulombe) who has big time upside with that elite changeup. not sure Coulombe is going to be missed all that much.

Coulombe was one of the guys they brought in this offseason to compete for a spot. Hoffman was another. None of them apparently turned out to be anything special. It sucks to lose Coulombe because the options in AAA are even worse.

The front office has been obsessed with acquiring depth everywhere except the bullpen.

Perhaps because they could use any of Ober / Winder / Varland / SWR / Sanchez / Dobnak / as multi inning RPs if they need more depth plus they have Megill / Henriguez / Ortega / DeLeon and several other non-40 man guys in STP.

They could use many of those guys. They wouldn't win games but they could use them.

Coulombe has appeared in 194 ML league games has a whopping total .5 WAR.  He isn't going to win games either.  I will take my chances with Winder / Megill / Henriquez or even Dobnak who are all much younger and can be a long-term solution.  Varland / SWR would also be better than Coulombe and it would be a way to prepare them for a role next year and several years to come.  Coulombe has no value beyond being a band aid if several guys get injured.

Winder and Henriquez are injured. Megill and Dobnak (and Sanchez) have been terrible. Coulombe and Hoffman are nothing special but they're not injured or terrible.

Dobnak has been better, by far, than a guy no one has signed to a MLB deal.

Coulombe contributed -0.31 WPA in his two years as a Twin. He doesn’t have options. He isn’t a long reliever and really was competing with Moran and Pagán.

Cole Sands is the first of many to have the last spot in the pen. He has a chance to prove himself and move up the ladder like Jax did last year. Otherwise he will be long relief help until the Twins bullpen gets stretched and they need a fresh arm.
