And if Anderson had referred to himself with an even more racially sensitive word? The fact that Donaldson was being dismissively snotty about it means he didn't actually care about the issue. So even if he didn't say it because he's a bigot, he's still just unbelievably obtuse, which doesn't change the fact that only a terrible person would have said that.

I would say Tim Anderson should be ashamed for having compared himself to Jackie Robinson in the first place.

Anderson didn't refer himself to a hypothetical word, he referred himself to Jackie Robinson. Calling JD racist for this is the problem with this country, he could have said about a million things that could be considered racist but this isn't one of them. The dig against TA wasn't because he was black, it was because he was f'n stupid for comparing himself to a national hero. Treating people different based on their skin color is racist, so JD being a jerk to TA and treating him like he treats everybody else is not racist. Now with that said I have no idea if JD is a racist and maybe he said things that haven't been reported, so a punishment is overdue.

Literally no one is defending Anderson. If Donaldson was truly offended by what Anderson said because he's a defender of civil rights or baseball history, he would have and should have told Anderson that what he said was wrong. He didn't, he said it mockingly which is dismissive of Anderson and insulting of Robinson. "Hey Tim, I found what you said insulting to Jackie Robinson's legacy." Instead he said it like a snotty brat teasing on the playground. He was the one being insulting, though I won't speculate on his motives.

That is BS, everybody that called what Donaldson did racist was defending Anderson. Anderson called himself Jackie, and when JD mocked him, he was called racist and suspended for mocking him. Calling JD a snotty brat is very similar to if you cut somebody off in traffic and they honk and you flip them off. Because how dare somebody honk at you or mock you (Anderson in this case) for making a ridiculous statement. It wasn't that long ago it was acceptable and to be honest expected in some cases to mock people for doing or saying ridiculous things, how many times has Rickey Henderson been mocked for the "I am the greatest of All Time" or talking in the third person by people of all colors, and that has never been considered racist or god forbid offensive. This is just another example of MLB trying to be the wokest thing in the room.

h2oface Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2022 Posted May 24, 2022 "Defender Denial" is, perhaps, an interesting subject all its own. If baseball fans and writers call Shohei Ohtani "today's Babe Ruth", it is a compliment coming from a third party, and certainly would not be mocked. And Ohtani would feel honored. In fact, this is now fact, as this has happened many times. If Shohei Ohtani made a practice of calling himself "today's Babe Ruth", then he would probably be the brunt of quite a bit of mocking and trash talk on the field. Would a player/players/fans get suspended/removed for calling him "Babe", being snotty brats, goading him, teasing him, trash talking him, getting in his head for his own arrogance,,,,,, even if Ohtani said he didn't like it? I think Anderson is the only one calling himself "today's Jackie Robinson".
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted May 24, 2022 Posted May 24, 2022 I guess it comes as no surprise that this couldn't be discussed civilly. Please disburse to other threads for baseball topics that you are comfortable discussing without resorting to generalizations, dismissives and name calling. Thread closed.
