Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted August 10, 2021 Posted August 10, 2021 Will Lewis play this year at all? Seems like a long absence. But I'm no doctor.....

Didn't he have his ACL surgery at the start of spring training? That's usually 9-12 months to fully return. Hopefully he can get some winter instructionals time in or something to be ready to go in '22.
Cap'n Piranha Verified Member Posted August 10, 2021 Posted August 10, 2021 From what I could find, he had surgery on February 26, and was expected to take 2-4 months before he could get to light jogging/an exercise bike. At the high end of that timeline, it's only been a couple weeks since he was able to do even light activity, so no, I don't think he'll get any game action in the next 4-6 weeks.

I agree though, we probably won't see him this year. Alas.
Danchat Verified Member Posted August 10, 2021 Posted August 10, 2021 I believe the usual ACL recovery time takes about 8-9 months, so there shouldn't be any chance of him returning by September. He'll be ready for 2022.
bean5302 Verified Member Posted August 10, 2021 Posted August 10, 2021 There is zero chance Royce Lewis plays this year even at AFL. If he follows a fast timetable (not insane Adrian Peterson timetable) Royce should juuuuuust be getting the okay to start light jogging.
bean5302 Verified Member Posted August 11, 2021 Posted August 11, 2021 Found this today. Really good news overall. Article is from 8/2. "Lewis has been running in the pool already, but he expects to begin jogging on land next week. Near the end of the month, he’ll travel to Minnesota to visit team physician Christopher Camp, where he hopes to get the go-ahead to progress his hitting and lateral movement. He plans to stay in Fort Myers through October and then report to spring training a month early in early-to-mid January to help him get some more at-bats under his belt." https://www.twincities.com/2021/08/02/rehabbing-twins-prospect-royce-lewis-determined-to-return-and-ball-out-like-people-have-never-seen-before/

There's never a good year for a season-ending injury but man, this was about as bad as it could get for Royce. With the Twins' losing season and plenty of empty outfield and infield spots, Lewis would have been playing in Minneapolis since probably June-ish. Goddamn.
TopGunn#22 Verified Member Posted August 11, 2021 Posted August 11, 2021 I was kind of hoping they could get him to play some Winter ball, just to get a little game action. I guess I was overly optimistic. I'm still not sure he's our SS of the future or our eventual replacement for Buxton if the FO bungles resigning him. But with him and Austin Martin they have a couple guys with high potential.

Unless the AFL changed its rules there was zero chance of him going back a second time anyway.

They did change the rule in 2019. https://www.milb.com/news/arizona-fall-league-to-begin-earlier-open-up-player-pool-305415426

Featured Comment Seth Stohs Site Manager Posted August 15, 2021 Featured Comment Posted August 15, 2021 I was texting a bit with Royce a couple of days ago about some other things, but I did ask how he was progressing. He said right now he's pretty much playing some catch and some ground balls... and he won't be adding more baseball activities until he sees Dr. Camp in Minneapolis this month. He remains positive. "Trying my best." He also noted that there are several others rehabbing and they provide good competition to each other, which helps. He talked in spring training about how he looked into it and Adrian Peterson was back playing in the NFL in 7 months (or something like that). At that time, they figured that would be September and that was a very very aggressive timeline, so they were going to be conservative and make sure he's ready for spring training.
