Baker miss first half

I advocated for the Twins to pick up his option during the offseason. I strongly felt he was a much better option that committing 10 million to Correia.

Clearly, I was wrong about Baker. Good decision Twins.

Not picking up Baker, with hindsight, was a good decision. And I agree, at the price Chicago signed him for, it was not worth the risk, so *perhaps* also a good decision in foresight, too.

I won't even begin to argue on Correia's behalf, but please, please, please let me eat those words!

Comparing Baker to Correia isn't the right fit. Correia to Marcum is the comparison there. Whether we made the right call on Baker is largely going to be based on what Pelfrey does or does not contribute. But so far it's looking like passing on Baker turned out to be the right call. I was heavy on the mistake there, but it was largely based on Baker > Pelfrey.

To be clear, I don't think going after Baker was a bad decision, and I think these decisions have to be evaluated without the benefit of hindsight. There was simply no way to know whether Baker would be injured at this point in the season.

That said, I'm glad the Twins didn't go down that road at this point.

The Twins had the benefit of the reports from their medical staff. I could have trusted their assessment rather than question their decision not to pick up option.

Well, and correct me if I'm wrong, but the issue was not a red flag for medical. They got outbid.

Seems like it very well could have been a financial choice to not go above a certain number, at least in part because of questions about health/durability....

I was unaware baker was still on the Twins, shouldn't this be posted in the general baseball thread?

I feel bad for what has happened to him, but this hardly has anything to do with the Twins in 2013 at this point and doesn't "legitimize" the reasoning they had for keeping him or letting him walk since nobody could have seen this setback happening.

God....

The nerve, jorgenswest, putting a discussion like that here. This never would have happened at BYTO!! The nerve...

thanks 10 pages...

I actually considered which forum and decided that my main thought was about the Twins decision making.

My apologies to Dave. I must not have made that clear in my original post.

You better be careful, jorgenswest, because for all the talk about letting things go at the wild wild west that was an old message board, some people are tattling to the authorities now. Just thought you would appreciate the warning.

Never understood the bitching about letting Baker leave...keeping him was certainly an alternative, but not a great one. The fact that they exclusively pursued other undesirable options isn't a reason to add emphasis to what would have been a highly questionable move at the time.

NOBODY could have seen Baker having elbow problems in the spring. that should read EVERYBODY should have seen Baker having elbow problems in the spring. It happens every spring. You can rip on the twins about who they did sign but I was and am glad they did not resign Baker. He has been a good pitcher when healthy but totally unreliable. He cannot stay healthy and as he ages it will get worse.

I mean I think most people thought a 1 year 3 mil deal would have been fair/fine to offer, but at the end of the day I don't blame the Twins one bit for not pursuing more actively.

Yeah the Correia deal was bad, but only because they "panicked?" and gave him 2 years instead of 1 year.

There is almost no "tattling" and the "authorities" are listening to members who don't want over-moderation. Just have fun and stay within the posted policies.

Twins medical staff dont have a clue , if they knew he was hurt then we would not have persued him....

Just tried to send you a private message, but it says your inbox limit is full (I'll skip the obvious jokes)... I would like to have a polite conversation with you if you would be willing to participate.

As it turns out, there was indeed an unusual level of reports today. I should have checked my email earlier, but I usually don't check it on Sundays.

If we moderators wanted more drama in our lives, we could just say bad things to our wives about their cooking. This drama is getting tiresome and I urge people to cut it out so that we can all focus on baseball.

Now you're being crazy... my girlfriend's cooking is deliciousness exponentially increased by love and butter.

Relax Glunn, nobody blames you for anything, and even if they do they'll just type you a silly message about it. Except ruining my Frodaddy joke, that is nearly unforgivable....

He's physically weak. He's mentally weak. Thank goodness he's gone.

Yep, we need more grit on this team. That's what we've been lacking. Thank goodness for Correia.

We need more guys like Correia on the team. Guys who consistently (never) go out and throw over (under) 200 innings, which Kevin has done multiple (zero) times in his career.

Back on topic... I'm a little surprised by this. I wanted to see the team re-sign Baker but now it looks like they were right to not waver on signing a deal without a team option.

(It was sarcasm)

Ultimately, given Liriano's and Marcum's injury problems, as well as Baker's, the guy to still feel bad about missing out on is Saunders.
