Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted March 14, 2013 Posted March 14, 2013 Well, that sucks. Who are the starters now for two months?
Badsmerf Verified Member Posted March 14, 2013 Posted March 14, 2013 Good to hear that Gibson is going to Rochester. I wish the same could be said about Hicks... but it looks like he will be the opening day CF unfortunately. I hope it is worth it for the Twins.
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted March 14, 2013 Posted March 14, 2013 So is it Hendriks and DeVries fighting for the fifth spot, or does Deduno have a shot if he shuts down Mauer and the Americans in the WBC tonight?
Jim Crikket Provisional Member Posted March 14, 2013 Posted March 14, 2013 So is it Hendriks and DeVries fighting for the fifth spot, or does Deduno have a shot if he shuts down Mauer and the Americans in the WBC tonight? As unpatriotic as it might sound, I'm rooting a little bit for Deduno to do just that, tonight.

The Twins should be playing the same player "control" game that the smart teams do (See, e.g., the Rays). Particularly because having Hicks or Gibson on the roster on opening day will not make or break the season. I still have hope Hicks starts in AAA and is, if still playing well, brought up the day after the Twins achieve the extra year of control.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted March 14, 2013 Posted March 14, 2013 do we have to ahve the control argument in every thread?
Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted March 14, 2013 Posted March 14, 2013 do we have to ahve the control argument in every thread? Keep it up and I'm going to ban you for two months to maintain control over your posting through 2018.

Try it, and I'll go to the posters union.....or maybe just spend more time talking about the Vikings on another board, or D&D on another board, or maybe I'll actually finish one of te 5 books I'm currently reading.....

D&D? Pssshhh. Nerd. Try it, buddy. My THAC0 is -8.
Nick Nelson Site Manager Posted March 14, 2013 Posted March 14, 2013 A little disappointing that Gibson couldn't take control this spring and establish himself as a top five option, as I'm excited to see him get going and innings are limited this year, but hopefully he'll sharpen up over the early weeks in Rochester and come to Minnesota by early May ready to go, with an extra year potentially added to his service time.

twinsnorth49 Old-Timey Member Posted March 14, 2013 Posted March 14, 2013 This was always going to be the plan, I don't think his performance this spring was ever going to play a factor.
ThePuck Provisional Member Posted March 14, 2013 Posted March 14, 2013 One less thing to have excitement over as the season starts.
Dance with Disco Dan Provisional Member Posted March 14, 2013 Posted March 14, 2013 do we have to ahve the control argument in every thread? Sorry you are over the topic. Unless and until Ryan hacks the Pohlads' checking account password, however, decisions about promoting a player to MLB must factor in the financial ramifications of that decision as well as the readiness of the player. If not, it's akin to GM malpractice - unless you GM for the Yankees, Red Sox, or Dodgers. It'd be nice to promote good young talent the second it's ready to succeed at the MLB level. Unfortunately, that's not life under the CBA for 27 teams. In a vacuum, I'd love to see Hicks start the season in CF if he is ready. But I'd rather see the Twins competing for the playoffs sooner than later and maximizing the low-cost control of its young talent will allow them the best chance to achieve that.
Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted March 14, 2013 Posted March 14, 2013 I'm going postal on this line of thought. Talk baseball, Go Twins, and hope we find some pitching. I don't even know what this means. Brock is hit by +18 Vorpal Sword of Confusion for 253 damage. Brock has died.
SweetOne69 Verified Member Posted March 14, 2013 Posted March 14, 2013 This makes sense. Gibson has pitched in 4 games this spring and hasn't gone more than 2 innings per outing while the other starters are at 4+IP at the same point. It's obvious that he hasn't been getting stretched out to be ready to go by opening day. Also his last couple of outings have been pretty lackluster.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted March 14, 2013 Posted March 14, 2013 THACO? that is old school..... On topic, I always said to keep him up if he was ready. It appears that he is not ready, so I have no problem with the deicision, but am bummed he was not ready.

There is no compelling reason to worry about control for a 25 year old. They have control until he's 31 or 32 already. This is not a 22 year old we are talking about, but someone that will be 26 just after the season ends. There are guys arguing against signing 30 year old pitchers as free agents, and yet many of those same poster are worried about controlling a pitcher past that age.....
Seth Stohs Site Manager Posted March 14, 2013 Author Posted March 14, 2013 Mike Berardino reported first that Danny Lehmann has also been reassigned to minor league camp.

bird Verified Member Posted March 14, 2013 Posted March 14, 2013 No!!! Danny Lehmann sent down??? What a mistake!!
strumdatjag Verified Member Posted March 14, 2013 Posted March 14, 2013 I want to see Deduno start the year as the Twins #5 - My only reason? So, I can respond "Day-Doo-Noe" to the stupid "Day-yoe" canned cheer at Target Field. Also, Deduno's stuff plus wildness may actually translate into success in MLB - The old "effectively wild" theory.

cmathewson Provisional Member Posted March 14, 2013 Posted March 14, 2013 I'm just glad they're sending him over there to start games and stretch out. I didn't like him relieving last night. Apparently, he didn't like it either, cause his first 10 pitches missed their mark.
