Dominic smith

Rumor this winter meeting is the Mets want to shed payroll and trade 1B Dominic Smith.  Would the Twins take on a Familia who had a terrible season last year and is owed 3 yr for 30 million and  get a young cheap 1B who plays solid defense at 1B and is projected to hit with power from the left side.

I know we keep assuming Sano is moving over to 1B but maybe the Twins are thinking of giving him another year at 3B and this is a way they can Use payroll flexible get a guy at first and a guy in the bullpen if they think they can tweet some things and get the Familia from years past.

I think that Dominic Smith is a pretty good player and has a strong pedigree. He's young and when he played last season, he was fantastic. My only worry is that he had under 200 plate appearances in 2019 and his two seasons before last were pretty sub par. I personally think he could have a nice career, but I think for a guy with such few successful MLB plate appearances, the front office may not want to trust him with 1B. If they were willing to trust a guy like that, they may even give guys like Rooker or Raley a shot before eating a questionable contract to acquire him.

It would be a fun move and I'd actually like it for Smith's upside and my belief that someone like Familia bounces back. I just try to look at it from the front offices point of view.

I don't think that a team looking to go deep into the playoffs should be taking on a lot of projects. You're talking about ridding the Mets of a bad RP contract in hopes that we can fix him (because I doubt we're going to DFA him) as well as taking on a good hitting prospect (which we have in spades) albeit a bit more ready than ours...

I don't really think this makes sense. If we're going to trade for a 1B or SP, I'd rather the downside be something that won't hinder us presently with an upside of a high ceiling (i.e. Matt Boyd or someone like that).

It depends on what we give up, of course (duh, right?), but Familia is only one year removed from being someone a lot of us wanted last year. Familia 2019 stunk, but Familia 2017/2018 would be a great add to the bullpen.

A clarification is that he has two years remaining on his 3/30 contract, but it was backloaded according to baseball-reference.com. He has 2/23.33 remaining, plus gets a $1MM bonus if he’s traded. That seems steep unless the Mets pick up a portion, though Smith would save us a bunch compared to the Cron/Thames kind of guys that have been discussed.

The Twins can afford some bloated contracts, but I wouldn't take on 3 years of one.

Familia was good when he was at his best. But he also has some baggage in his personal life doesn't he?

Pass.
