In a vacuum, I’d probably cheer for the Nats to win it all. Since we’re not in a vacuum please tell me which of my two reasons they are the LAST remaining team I want to win the WS is most shallow:

1. I don’t want them to have enough steam to feel compelled to work something out with Strausburg.

2. I’ll be damned if another long suffering team who hasn’t won the WS since the Twins last did in 1991 wins it all before my Twins do.

 

Even if they don't work something out, you really think Stras at 31 would have a lot of offers beyond 4/$100 that he's opting out of?

A-Rod, in the post-game show, states that he's 100% sure ("well, 99%") that the Astros "knew" those pitches in the first inning. He was careful to say he wasn't accusing anyone of anything, but....

In case we were still debating who the best fans in MLB are:

 

St. Louis Cardinals fans give Washington pitcher standing ovation as he leaves the field.

Was thinking the same when watching it last night. I can think of other fanbases who would have done similarly, for instance the one just a few miles away by MBTA Commuter Rail, but to be in the running for the "best fans" this is an important hurdle to clear. Good luck with that, KC or Philly.

You are correct—getting a “Standing O” right there is not proof, but it’s a hurdle many fan bases would not clear.

I would have not taken out a guy who had only given up 1 hit, but the pinch hitter got a hit for the Nats. I guess Rocco would have yanked Scherzer in the 5th....Each of these post season teams have 1 and 2 Star pitchers, and that is what the Twins were missing....waiting for the Astros game. Hope they beat that other team. Go Nationals!

Watching the Yankee Astro pre-game show and you wouldnt even know Houston is playing.....Just like the Twins series I guess, we didnt exist either!

Go Astros, Altuve is top 10 to me - fun to watch, And Bregman for size those 2 are both fun to watch, Alot of these games we r not use to all these pitching battles, know we had some bad luck with Starters , but even at our full strength, Dont think we could of hit alot of these pitchers, October, baseball to me Contact is more important than Power---- Gotta Adjust every a.b. every pitch

How about the Nationals,  Ther #4 annibal Sanchez, would be our # ? starter , was it 2 years ago we let him go, back then he wasent pitching like he did to the cards

Just to clarify for reference, nearly half the stadium in tickets was available for purchase roughly 12 hours ahead of the game. Assuming these are all Cardinals fans is perhaps giving additional credit where it is not due. No numbers to say who was or was not there to support the Cardinals, but with that many tickets available, traveling fans and just fans of baseball that wanted to see an NLCS game could be a notable contingent of the group giving that ovation.

I'm not going to get into a "who's fans are best" argument, but --

 

The stadium had just erupted in huge cheers for the Cardinals first hit of the night. Which brought the top of the lineup to the plate as the tying run, and prompted the removal of the pitcher that had stymied the Cardinals all night -- and the opening of the Nationals bullpen which is regarded as porous.

 

Here's a highlight with clips of the hit and the pitching change beginning at the 1:00 mark -- I don't get the sense that there was really an widespread ovation of positive recognition for Sanchez here:

I've done this before too -- cheered the Twins for planting the seed of a hopeful rally, and finally getting a tough pitcher out of the game.

Interesting Yankees-Astros game last night, and good result (series tied 1-1), although too long for my tastes!

 

Yankees pulled Paxton pretty aggressively in the third inning, and eventually ran out of effective relief pitchers -- although it didn't happen until the 11th. I kind of like the aggressive strategy in the postseason, although it certainly has downside risks like that in the late innings and especially extra innings.

Wow, it's weird to see the Nationals living up to their potential. Did they need to get Bryce Harper off their backs or something?

To be fair, they ran into 4 good teams in their 4 playoff trips with Harper, and they were very close losses (3 of them going the full 5 games, and the other was 3-1 to the eventual champ Giants in 2014, featuring 3 one run losses -- the Nats and Giants actually tied at 9 runs for the series!) And they didn't have Strasburg or Rendon for the first one of those, or Scherzer for the first two, so there are more key differences than just Harper.

 

They certainly are playing well this year, though! And to think, they not only started the year 19-31, they've also been on the brink of playoff elimination twice -- trailed the wild card game by 2 runs with only 4 outs to go, and game 5 of the NLDS by 2 runs with 6 outs to go.
