This x1000. He could have won, he could have made Texas competitive again. Him not running for Senate is going to be the big What If of 2020, I think.

I think he eventually just runs for that Senate seat. Or Julian Castro beats him to the punch.

My mom was in charge of the remote and part way through started muting every time Beto came on.

I liked Castro a lot. I liked him before but like him more now. Warren is still my front runner but Castro closed that gap.

I'm hopeful Castro gained some momentum. I'd really like to see him in the big league debates. I wonder if anyone will drop out before the next debate.

Our healthcare system should cover anyone here. Just like other countries. Where it is cheaper and there are better outcomes. This isn't hard. We have decades of proof that socialized medicine is the best medicine. Decades.

Biden's having a rough night. Dodging questions, getting owned by Harris, and a bad answer for the first issue he would change when he enters the oval office.

If your party runs on VA Care For All and destroying private health insurance, but it polls poorly and hurts 2020 candidates, is that because it's bad policy or because Americans are uninformed?

The campaign should endeavor to educate them and not sit upon what polls badly early on.

The thing that frustrates me about their arguments for Medicare for All is what a huge boon it would be for businesses to no longer have to manage their benefit programs  Even if the money they spent on insurance were converted into a tax, they would still save tons on the managerial costs of those programs.

I kind of liked the Senator from Colorado.

I hated that the status quo candidates received more time, more questions and were given a bigger stage.

Haven't seen the whole thing tonight, but there was a pretty surprising discrepancy last night in terms of candidate exposure by minutes and seconds spent speaking . Booker and Beto spoke more than twice as much as Inslee and de Blasio, and Warren was not far behind the leaders.

Any thoughts on Yang's performance tonight? He's one of the third tier/long odds candidates for sure, but I'm interested in how he runs in terms of his future prospects.

Edit: In fourth place for 'air time' last night, just a hair behind Warren, was moderator Chuck Todd. Huh.

He didn’t really get to say much so it was difficult to say. I liked what he said when he did talk, but still felt like I just didn’t hear enough to really know.

Thanks, kind of what I expected based on last night... front runners playing not to lose and saving up for the medal round, 2nd tier goes for broke and either booms or busts, and third tier getting a participation merit badge.

Yang was underwhelming. And he was given a few softballs.  He wasn't good a distilling his ideas to palatable terms.  I was looking forward to what he had to say.

Bennett (Senator from Colorado) is a good orator and pushed back against Biden and others well.  Hidenlooper (former governor from Colorado) seems stuck in another decade.

All though I'm big fan of Warren, Harris is my number two, though I'd like to see how she responds to tough questions about her record as prosecutor (which Biden took a dig at tonight).

Thanks for the summary and the correction. Bennett is one of the 'Who?' candidates, for me, anyway. His bio says that he was appointed superintendent of Denver PS's despite never having been a teacher, let alone a school administrator. And he served only a year and change as an appointed Senator before winning his first election ever when his term was up. So coming out of nowhere to succeed is nbd for him, I guess.

I listened to most of it. Harris had a strong showing. Pete also did well. Biden was underwhelming. I continue to feel that Sanders and Biden are past their primes. The messaging is done better by Harris, Warren, Castro, Mayor Pete. I'm interested to see how these performances impact the polls going forward.

Harris and Castro made the largest jumps for me. I already really liked Warren and she didn’t disappoint, but Harris and Castro kind of evened the playing field for me. I thought Klobuchar and Gillebrand showed well, but also didn’t quite impress enough. Buttigieg was great. He’s smart and gets it, but ... I just don’t think he’s quite ready, but I do think he will be president some day. Maybe in 4 or 8 years he will be my candidate. Booker? Eh. Beto? No. Biden and Sanders ... I don’t think they acquitted themselves well, at all, but maybe that’s just me.

I wish I could have heard more from the ‘lesser knowns.’ The Senator from Colorado was intriguing to me. Williamson ... um ... love will beat Trump? That needs to stay with her motivational speaking gigs. Everyone else I’ve already forgotten.

Great summary, Carole...Harris was excellent last night. I agree that Sen. Bennet from CO was as well.

I have been on board with Biden as I've thought he would the most electable, but his performance last night was pretty uneven. I hate to say it, but he came across a little old. Almost confused at times.

My debate rankings:

1. Harris

GAP

2. Bennet

3. Buttigieg

GAP

4. Gillibrand

5. Sanders

6. Swalwell

7. Hickenlooper

8. Biden

9. Yang

HUGE GAP

10. Williamson

Harris is going to be a force. She is sharp, and can really connect emotionally (Something I don't think Warren is great at). If her, Warren, Buttigieg, Booker, and Castro are the last 5 standing... Democrats will be choosing from a great list. That would excite people.

I agree on your take with mayor Pete. He should run for higher office and get some experience. He has a great background, but some higher level political experience would be helpful. With that list of candidates, having him as a candidate after one of them are president would be great.

Of course, these debates aren’t the end all and be all. But ... glad I was ‘forced’ to watch and found them interesting. (Had I not been at my Mom’s with family, not sure I’d have watched.)

I also wondered, between the two nights, if one of them wins in 2020, how many of the others could be cabinet picks?

I don't think Biden is ready for this new trend of presidential debates... He was visibly thrown off by Harris' attack last night. When you have to address and account for all of your stances and beliefs over 30+ years that makes it tough.

These days it's an advantage not to have a extensive voting track record for opponents to dig into.

I wouldn’t call it an attack so much as holding him accountable. She stood up to him. But yeah, I think his age showed. When he was a Senator it was a different age and time, and things were done more with a handshake and a wink. It’s just not like that anymore.

Both Biden and Bernie showed their age last night. Both are certainly sticking around until the bitter end, but I don't think either will encourage others outside of their core fans to go out and vote for them.

Harris did give him the chance to walk back his stance on busing which he did not, and now that every one is exploring what his stance was and it's not going to be good for Joe, as it appears he actively opposed busing, and just didn't simply advocate for state right's on the issue.

2 things really stuck out to me that contributed to his bad night. The lack of a rebuttal to Harris is one. The other is excluding NRA from any blame for the guns issue in America. I paused and listened again last night just to make sure I didn't misinterpret that quote. Disappointing.

It will be fun seeing how these debate performances impact the polls. Again, we are going to be faced with the establishment candidate (Biden), running against a new breed of Democrat.

I also really hope the candidates hammer on the insurance industry. It isn't enough to talk about single payer... put the heat on insurance companies, drug companies, and corporate hospitals. People aren't as stupid as the GOP thinks, we know who we pay our checks to.
