Riverbrian Old-Timey Member Posted November 26, 2018 Posted November 26, 2018 Are you sure Cron costs 5M? He's a FA. He will sign for what he can get. I don't believe there's an arb requirement in there, is it? I don't mind a pickup like that. We will need 1B/DH help this season and probably next. I'd rather go bigger, but this isn't a bad move for a guy that could have some upside yet. I was using the 5M estimate he was due in Arbitration. Last year Dickerson was traded after he was DFA'd. There is still that possibility for Cron. I'm all for adding assets wherever we can and Cron has some light tower power. but... I'm also willing (actually hopeful) to see what Austin can do. Austin is out of options and if we are going to see what Austin can do, his presence on the roster makes the acquisition of someone like Cron difficult. The Rays couldn't manage both Cron and Choi on the same roster due to the lack of flexibility they both possess and I don't believe the Twins can roster both Cron and Austin for the same reason.
Major League Ready Verified Member Posted November 26, 2018 Posted November 26, 2018 Let's hope Sano shows up at 240 lbs, plays above average 3B and the two of them combine for 75HR!!! A man can dream, can't he?

Whelp, he never made it to FA... He's probably our DH. Hope they do go out and get someone in the IF who can play multiple positions.

DrNeau Verified Member Posted November 28, 2018 Posted November 28, 2018 According to our Depth Chart (last updated today)... According to the depth chart:* Sano will not make the team (doubt that happens)* Garver is no longer a catcher* Grossman will not make the team* Cron is 1B - not Austin As it applies to position players, the depth chart should instead look like this:1. C - Garver2. DH - Cron3. LF - Rosario4. CF - Buxton5. RF - Cave6. 3B - Sano7. SS - Polanco8. 2B - _______9. 1B - Austin-- Bench --10. OF - Kepler11. C - Astudillo12. IF - Adrianza Thoughts:* Sano will start at 3B* We have 5 years of team control over Austin. Might as well give him a shot to assume the 1B role, long-term. He has 77 MLB games at 1B and 1 error. Nothing is really screaming that he is incapable at 1B. Looked fine there last year. * We need to trade Castro and go with Garver/Astudillo* We need to trade Grossman* Our only need right now is 2B* Josh Harrison can't play SS. We're fine with Adrianza for Utility. Side note: * Pineda will slot into the rotation* Need to improve bullpen* Don't overpay for a closer - use May
ashbury Verified Member Posted November 28, 2018 Posted November 28, 2018 According to our Depth Chart (last updated today)...I wouldn't pay this chart a tremendous amount of heed. I said this in another thread, but it seems to reflect some kind of snapshot of thinking during early-September, and then updated (by an intern? or someone at MLB.com but outside the organization?) in the off-season to reflect moves like Cron being added and Santana not having his option picked up. Slegers with an asterisk in the rotation appears to indicate an injury, which was the case for him in September but he recovered and made an appearance late in the month. And Romero made a lot of starts for the team but wasn't called up in September, and doesn't show up in the starting rotation grouping at all even though iffy guys like Gonsalves and Littel and Stewart do. Sano is not listed at third base, and indeed during September he was held back from there, although mid-month he had one game at third. Garver was limited to non-catching duty due to the concussion but I've seen nothing other than this chart to indicate it's a permanent decision. All in all this chart looks like it contains misinformation from misunderstandings by someone without real authority. As always, I Could Be Wrong.

DrNeau Verified Member Posted November 28, 2018 Posted November 28, 2018 Sano and Grossman are both listed on that depth chart you posted. There are 12 position player spots, but there are more players than that on the depth chart. Mathematically, some will not make the team.

As always, I Could Be Wrong. Yes, it says "projected by MLB.com" so that is possible. Still fun to see how the roster is formulating and chat about it.
