Gabriel Maciel write up from John Sickels:

10) Gabriel Maciel, OF, Grade C+/B-: Age 18, signed out of Brazil in 2015, hit .323/.389/.438 with 24 walks, 34 strikeouts in 217 at-bats in Pioneer League, nine steals; 65-70 speed though he needs to use it better; patient approach helps OBP and makes him a significant leadoff threat; athletic switch-hitter but 5-10, 170 frame lacks impact power; more polished as a hitter than Eduardo Diaz but younger. ETA 2021.

The others don't have a write up in his top 20 report

They have two very young players in A ball with upside and a former college OF whose numbers look like Lamonte Wade.

The Twins can only control keeping him and offering a qualifying offer or trading him for the best the market has to offer.

I would have been prepared to make the QO but the return is probably better than a comp pick in the 50s. I would think either of the two younger players is close to that comp pick and getting both lottery tickets exceeds that value.

Why haven’t we traded Dozier? I’d rather kept Escobar and traded Dozier, I mean it’s not like we are going to resign a regressive player like Dozier anyways. Escobar was our insurance policy for if Sano doesn’t pan out. Now we can’t replace the production we are losing with Escobar.

I think it's mighty nice of the Twins to bring in a mixed up Johan prior to putting Johan Santana in the Twins Hall of Fame....

Brilliant!

Get used to Adrianza playing 3rd until Sano comes back. Which will probably be tomorrow. So much for having him earn his way back......

He did what he needed to do. Lost 20 pounds, and worked hard. He satisfied the front office, which is good enough for me.

The only way I will like this trade is if the Twins sign Escobar to a 3 or 4 year deal in the offseason.

agree.... laugh at me because I'm just a dumb fan, but I was still hoping to make an improbable run at 2018. Jokes on me!!!

This trade doesn't seem to make much sense

The Twins are out of the playoff race and traded a pending FA for something. Seems pretty cut and dry. More pending FAs will be traded too.

you are getting three prospects in the double-digits of a team whose #3 prospect would be #15 on 90% of the other teams in the league. None of them would be a top-50 pick next year

Also, what good is a bunch of A ball prospects for Escobar? We have very little in AA and AAA lineup wise, so wouldn’t conventional wisdom be to trade for AA and AAA talent for Escobar. The players we traded for are 2-4 years alway anyways, right now we need at least prospects in AA and AAA right now.

Hey, I'm just a dumb fan without the analytic tools of the front office.

I'm sure the clubhouse is on board with this!

No analytics needed! Just a glance at the standings.

When has this team shown they can go on a tear at any point this season? Week in, week out, .500 ball or pitiful baseball.

The best word to describe the trade is underwhelming. A couple of C level prospects (plus another sub C level guy) at low A make me wonder if the deal is worthwhile. I guess if I had to point to one promising aspect of the trade it is that all the guys coming back are pretty young.

What race are we in this year, exactly?

I can read the standings. I don't need the know-it-alls to tell me they're not a "true contender" or whatever. I know what their record is. I want to cheer my team. The players want to make a run.

Falvey just traded one of our best, most popular players. So go ahead, tell me again how great this move is. :)

On the Twins’ side, there’s some interesting young talent coming back. Per MLB.com’s recently updated organizational rankings, Maciel ranked as the 11th-best prospect in the Arizona system, with Duran listed in the 19th spot. Maciel is valued for his ability to get aboard and do damage on the basepaths when he does. Entering the season, Baseball America rated both of those players among the thirty best Diamondbacks prospects. In their latest look, they bumped Duran into the club’s top-ten list on the basis of his big heater and “power curve.” While he still needs a third pitch to profile as a future starter, it seems there’s a lot to like about his arm.

You can still cheer for your team and hope they make a run without Escobar now.

I never said it's a great move. It is what it is. More trades like this are going to happen when the team torpedoed in the first half.

May work out eventually (like Escobar did) but nothing here I love. Definitely some potential but still... meh. I thought we would be trading for near-term assets... that’s what we were told.

Stepping back, still not bad for a utility guy. If Sano returns to form now and Polanco doesn’t screw up again, we are fine. Just hate knowing any benefit from this deal is years away...

I guess you would make the qualifying offer. Fair enough. I am torn.

I was incorrect about the 50. If Escobar signs for less than 50 million it would be after the competitive balance picks in round 2. This year those picks were 75 to 78. Of the over 200 players drafted in those slots a total of 8 have a career WAR of better than 20. Two others had good stretches in their career coming in above 10. That is about a 5% chance of getting a good player. The bar of a comp pick in that range isn't a very high bar to clear in a trade.
