In theory, Mauer is gone after 2018, Santana and Hughes are gone after 2019, though Hughes could end up retiring still and insurance would kick in to help mitigate his contract early. Santiago, Gibson and Perkins could and should all be gone after this season. (Slight chance Gibson would be retained). Guys like Giminez and Belisle don't earn a ton, but could also be gone, freeing up at least a little more payroll.

My entire point being this team has, and will have soon, quite a bit of free payroll to allow them to;

A] Sign at least one quality FA SP. Possibly re-sign Garcia, should he look good. And still have the funds to add a quality RP or two.

B] Still have the finances to hold on to current young players as they begin to, eventually, reach the arbitration years of their careers.

The team could afford to trade Dozier, player replacement wise, if there turns out to be a solid offer for him. Just really not sure what kind of offer Kintzler could bring, but I would consider trading him, but would be happy to bring him back. Keep Santana. We already need more pitching, not less, and we're not getting SP NOW for Santana.

Santana regressed to a #3 In 2018? And? I'd still be more than happy with that.

Bring up Garver.

Keep Santana.

Put out feelers for the others and see.

Sign the best FA SP next off season.

Maybe keep Garcia.

Sign a quality RP or 2.

Keep working in the young RP.

Strongly consider a 1B/DH to work with Mauer and strengthen the lineup.

Belisle has actually been lights out this month, no runs in 10 appearances and 11.2 innings. Could definitely see a team giving him a chance. Might have to wait until August waiver period.

Hughes worked out fine, for almost 2/3 of his original contract. (Don't let the extension fool you into thinking the original contract was bad.)

Nolasco didn't quite work out, of course, but even there he has recovered to post a 90 ERA+ and eat 180-200 IP a year over the last half of his contract. That's what Ervin was doing the year before we signed him.

I'm not saying trade him for just anything, but Ervin isn't entirely irreplaceable. In fact, I suspect he is replaceable enough that we won't get offered much for him in trade.

Was this meant as a defense ot trading Santana and signing a different free agent?

They can move him but won't get much but salary relief.

I would guess Garcia and Kintzler are going by Monday and nothing else.

I would personally keep them and add a cheap rental reliever.

The thing I don't understand with this often stated line of thinking is how do people think it is easy to replace this kind of pitcher in free agency? Seems to me of all the past signings he is the only one who panned out. It would have to be a huge haul for me to be on board.

Depends on the return.  We have a large number of pitchers in AA and AAA who at least need shots to see if they can pitch at this level.  Are you going to wait until they are out of options to find out?.

If we sweep the A's probably nothing will happen, if we lose a couple, Twins will almost certainly sell.  I hope they are able to sell the pieces that bring the highest return.

Weren't you predicting Jake Reed would be up by now?

And now you want to add a Belisle clone?

I thought Reed was going to do better in AAA. Alas.

Well I just think with pitching as scarce as it is it would be tough to give up Santana. The cleanse i would do on the staff is to flush Colon.... sorry couldn't help it

How about Curtiss? They promoted him to AAA too, which implies they may protect him on the 40 man this winter.

And who would you send out for your Belisle clone? Keep in mind they are still running out an 8 man bullpen right now, and Perkins might want a spot soon too...

Who said a Belisle clone? I would aim a little higher than only salary relief in a trade.

But sure, I'd give Curtiss a try at some point.

But Pressly, Busenitz and Boshers (for starters) all strike me as easily replaceable with even a minor upgrade.

I admit, I forgot about Pressly. Wouldn't mind optioning him again. But I'd rather look at Curtiss or maybe even Romero with that spot right now.

Since we've added Busenitz and Hildenberger already, might as well give them as many opportunities as possible.

Boshers is a bit of a weird case. Is he a LOOGY? Would we rather have a bench bat, or Garver?

I can see that... though I'd just go with Garver as the platoon with Mauer at 1B since he'd be $0.5M instead of $5M, and use that extra $4.5M on pitching.

Not to mention I don't want anyoe like Valencia near my young talents.  Horrible attitude, horrible teammate.  It's been stated in all his previous stops.

Going to politely disagree, though your point is well taken. Busentiz has looked good, needs time, and could be a quality piece, perhaps. Pressly has, frankly, been pretty awful. But the arm and potential us there and we've seen results before. Hate to completely give up on him. Like to see someone better than Boshers, but, the guy keeps doing recently when called on.

MOAR: https://www.mlbdailydish.com/2017/7/29/16063678/mlb-trade-rumors-twins-sale

The Twins have definitively decided to sell pieces in advance of Monday’s non-waiver trade deadline, a major-league source confirmed Saturday. Minnesota is expected to make moves over the next 48 hours.

Minnesota has a few assets that will draw interest, including starters Ervin Santana and Jaime Garcia, infielder Brian Dozier and relievers Matt Belisle and Brandon Kintzler. It’s unclear if they’re willing to trade controllable assets, though the pending free agents (Kintzler and Garcia) are definitely available.

The Twins made a buy move last week, acquiring Garcia in a three-player deal with Atlanta. He’s again on the trade market after making one start for Minnesota and will likely draw interest from clubs like the Royals and Yankees who previously pursued him.
