Draft picks signed

I wonder if something has shifted in that the HS kids know going to school for two or three years until their next draft opportunity is a much bigger risk than a college junior going back for only one more season to a place they already dominated.

 

Just spitballing, something certainly changed this year.

Appel already went back and did pretty well (in the draft anyway!), which suggests maybe it's not a new phenomenon.

 

Aiken went back and didn't do as well (although didn't do that poorly in the draft either).

 

I'm far from a draft expert, though!

I didn't say anything about treating him with disregard, or giving him ultimatums.  He was drafted around his projected slot, what's wrong with offering him slot and letting him think about it for a couple days?  The player and agent don't have an automatic right to always ask for and receive a little more, with the justification that the extra amount isn't important enough to sink the deal.

 

Now, I'm guessing it's a nominal amount here, maybe a result of having money left over, but that suggests something about our draft strategy didn't go quite as planned.  (And that doesn't mean it was a bad draft either, it's just interesting to discuss.)

 

I don't think you personally would treat them with disregard. The clock is ticking guys are flying off your board and so you text people and ask "what's your number?" or "would Rooker take...." And you get the amount he's look for. The number is slightly over slot, now you can A, keep going back and forth down to the wire, B, say he might get that elsewhere but lets take him anyway and offer less, C, say pass he wasn't "the guy" anyway, or D, know it's not going to break the bank and say we can work around that, he's the one we want. It's already clear what they did with Lewis (D), Wright ©, and Mckay (A).

In the day one draft thread someone had a source who leaked, around pick 16 IIRC, that their next pick would land with a boom (or something to that effect) -referring to Rooker. I assume the $$ was agreed upon at that point if not earlier.

Big deal. Good for Rooker. Get him signed and see what he can do. All minor league players should be paid more, anyway. Spend the money. Win some baseball games.

No.  Rooker was day 1 as well.  The day 2 story was High Schooler Blayne Enlow who was projected to go as high as late 1st round

Disappointing that hes starting in Elizabethton.  We have high schoolers start there.  He has been playing 3 years at above that level.

Twins fans generally would prefer the team's players do well - I think it's extremely unlikely for the sentiment to be rare.
