Article: Arcia, Hicks might have earned a look

I wonder if Arcia might be sent to the AFL?

Unless there's an injury, I don't think the Twins will bring up Hicks. They need Span to keep playing to keep his trade value high for the offseason. Willingham won't get sat. And Mauer, Doumit and Morneau have the DH spot covered. I could see Arcia coming up and getting some time in RF with Revere but more likely the Twins don't burn an option year on either of them this year.

Arcia is from a country (Venezuela) with their own winter league, and thus is ineligible for the AFL.

This is true, and yet when I went to the AFL 2 years ago, Starlin Castro was playing there... and I think there were a couple others from the Dominican there last year. That said, Arcia most likely will just play for Araqua again this offseason. I would assume that's where they'll send Aaron Hicks for a month or so as well.

Did not know that rule, thanks for clarifying.

Neither will come up before the Rock Cats playoff run ends, whenever that is. And that's good, because as has been noted, they wouldn't get much playing time. I can see Arcia coming up after they're done. Both have been terrific, but because of the current OF set up, unless there is an injury, I wouldn't expect to see either. If we do, that'd be very fun to watch too.

It would be fun to see these guys get a look in September, but I think Parmelee has dibs on any available at bats even if they come in RF. On the other hand, Parmelee has played exactly zero games in the OF at Rochester.

Arcia burns an option yr regardless of whether he comes up or not.....Hicks will not use an option yr as he will never be optioned, only added to 40 man roster. No lose bringin both up, cept service time

I was all set to argue with you on Arcia's option but then I read that "If a player is on the 40-man roster in spring training but optioned to the minors before the season begins, an option is used." I had not known that. Then I think he should get a call up after the AA playoffs.

I would think one of the two will be called up in September... Maybe.

And, that's why you have to read the wording with those spring training (or any) transactions. Arcia was one of 3-4 players added to the 40 man roster last fall. When he or Robertson, etc. were send to minor league camp, the transaction read, "Optioned to..." When someone like Matt Carson or Sam Deduno got sent down, the transaction read, "reassigned to minor league camp."

Both getting called up straight from AA might be a fun final FU to Rochester. I'd like to see both play in AAA as bypassing that level has not been the best choice over the last year for the Twins young players, but it would be a fun middle finger to give to those Yankee fans if the Twins do switch AAA affiliates.

not really, the seasons end at teh same time. If they get called up, they will be there for September... it's quite likely that both will start next season in Rochester.

there's pretty much 0% chance that either get called up considering the financial disincentive due to calling them up.

Neither should be called up before the super 2 cutoff next season.

Both could use a little time at AAA IMO, there is no rush.

But is Rochester the Twins AAA team next year?

I'm not sure it matters... them getting called up is hardly a FU to Rochester... that's my point. Baring a trade, these guys will be playing in AAA next season no matter where it is.

If I knew ahead of time that this would be the one chance to see an OF of Hicks-Span-Revere, I would say call him up. I hope this is possible next year, however . . .

I don't like calling either up, nor do I like sending either to AFL.

Darren Wolfson is hosting a show on 1500espn.com at 6:00 tonight. He had Terry Ryan on as a guest. I didn't listen to it, but Doogie did tweet the following:

Got the sense from talking to Ryan on @1500ESPN that we'll see Hicks & Arcia in September. #mntwins

Maybe this means that it is possible Span will still be traded this year. Hopes he hurries back from the minor injury (if it is minor, note how wrong the Twins medical staff has been this year)

Does calling up Hicks (and putting him on the 40) start his options one year earlier than if he's added in November?

I'm not worried about playing time for these guys, as they don't need to play every day, and nor do any of the current Twin outfielders need to play every day in September.

No, I don't think it does. You don't use the option unless you're sent down. So if he's called up in September but never demoted until next year at spring training, he doesn't use the option.

(Can anyone else confirm that definitively?)

It doesn't use an option, nor should it (hopefully) be an issue with a guy like Hicks anyways.

The real issue is the Super 2 thingy, I'm not sure if the rules have changed, but ideally you wouldn't want him to gain that status since he has the chance to be a special player. Typically I am against holding players back for this, but there are a few guys in the Twins system (Arcia, Hicks, Sano, Gibson??) where it might be warranted.

Well, sure. But a September call-up, followed by what comes next year (over half the year at AAA) should allow for that, and if it doesn't, it won't make that huge of financial difference overall. The real kicker is making sure they end next year with under 1 year of major league time so push back the FA year and keep them under team control. i doubt there's going to be anything negative, accrual-wise, that occurs from a call-up this September.

John, you are correct. An option is only used when a guy is sent down.

As for the super 2... If Hicks were to get called up in Sept, and make the team out of ST next year and never go back down, he will not be a super 2. Even the super 2s, by the way, still have 2+ full years in teh league. He becomes a super 2 if he gets called up in say May and never goes back down, which would make him arb elibible in 2016.

Please state a good reason for not allowing either to play in the AFL with the rest of the top minor league prospects. It would be very rare for Arcia to play there (he'll play in the VWL likely) though.

Of course he wouldn't be super 2 in this situation but he would hit FA a year earlier which imo is worse than super 2. super 2 only costs money while FA means that you completely lose the player one year earlier. You pretty much laid out the worst case scenario with your explanation.
