Thrylos Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2017 Author Posted May 3, 2017 If your post meant not knowing more recent velocities (more recent then March/early April) than I would probably agree that we haven't been given one that I can recall either. I feel like the more recent reports have just said effort level and things like not much improvement, but no specific velocity readings. This one. Of course I knew the 78 in the middle of March. This one had that velocity not increasing a bit since then. And there were no velocity reports for a month and a half... That was the only one back then and nobody bothered to say that it did not get any better.

I *think* someone like Lavelle said he wasn't improving, but my mind could have made it up because I can't find it. But I do agree that there hasn't been velocity reports since that 78 was first reported. I can't find any right now and I don't recall reading any either. Could be wrong and just missing it.
DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2017 Posted May 3, 2017 I honestly don't understand how people don't like Perkins. The guy is a class act, is a Minnesota born and bred guy, got mismanaged by the team, put his head back down, worked his ass off and became one of the best relief pitchers in a franchise that has had a lot of good ones.I admire his resolve and effort to try to come back and help out this club, that is very commendable, the guy could easily just sit out the year and no one would blame him. I hope he makes it back some day, but if not, I am glad he was able to make a healthy living for his efforts (30+ million in his career)I hope he stays close or even with the organization when his playing days are done.Hopefully though, he somehow finds a way to have another couple years of major league pitching.Good luck to Glenn 100% whether for the Twins or another team. I will always be a fan.
Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted May 4, 2017 Posted May 4, 2017 Bert started broadcasting 15-20 years ago. 10 years after retiring. He stumbles. Being on live television for 3-4 hours is an extremely difficult job.I'd have to check but I believe Blyleven started broadcasting over 20 years ago. Not that it changes your point or anything. Edit: 1996 was his first broadcast season so this is his 22nd season.
Thrylos Old-Timey Member Posted May 4, 2017 Author Posted May 4, 2017 I honestly don't understand how people don't like Perkins. The guy is a class act Sure. He sued the Twins when they sent him down for sucking back in the day. And by insisting pitching while hurt in 2015, instead of saying he was hurt at the All Star Break allowing the Twins to get a real replacement, he cost them the 2015 post-season. And if he were such a great guy, he'd retire to save the Twins some $ so they can spend it in improving the club this season. But he won't. Spam is also Minnesota born and bred

Thrylos Old-Timey Member Posted May 4, 2017 Author Posted May 4, 2017 If he retires because of injury, he still gets paid. Sure about that? Are the Mets still paying Cuddyer?
Thrylos Old-Timey Member Posted May 4, 2017 Author Posted May 4, 2017 And here is more on the subject with plenty of quotes from Perkins.
Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted May 4, 2017 Posted May 4, 2017 Sure about that? Are the Mets still paying Cuddyer?Going from old knowledge but almost positive retirement voids a contract.
yarnivek1972 Verified Member Posted May 4, 2017 Posted May 4, 2017 er Sure about that? Are the Mets still paying Cuddyer?Seeing as 2016 was the last year of Cuddyer's contract, no. But, I'm sure they were last year. I bet if you look at transactions from last march, you will see Cuddyer being placed on 60 day DL. Twins paid Puckett when he was forced to retire. He was still under contract through 1997 I believe.
yarnivek1972 Verified Member Posted May 4, 2017 Posted May 4, 2017 Going from old knowledge but almost positive retirement voids a contract.Well, there's garden variety retirement and injury retirement. If Perkins retires while he is on the DL it is pretty clear that it is injury related. Edit: Just looked up transactions for the Mets, he "voluntarily" retired in December of 2015. As I said, that's entirely different.

DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted May 4, 2017 Posted May 4, 2017 No way should Perkins retire, the Twins were able to underpay him his first 5 or so years (as is part of the game). He is only owed 6.5 million anyways, that is a rounding error to the Pohlads. That money isn't going to prevent the Twins from contending, I gurantee that! Also like I said, he is making a consensus effort to pitch again, the guy is 32, which is how old I am. He's not exactly an old man. If he can get healthy, as a RP, he could pitch for several more years.
DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted May 4, 2017 Posted May 4, 2017 That's what I am talking about.... Doing the right thing. ie. voluntarily retirelol ok, so you are asking him to give up 30% of his lifetime earnings for no reason. To an ownership group (and company) that is insanely rich and profitable no matter what. I'd love to see you do the same thing. I certainly wouldn't give up 30% of my lifetime earnings for no good reason. Especially when Perkins was literally hurt on the job! Give me a break, seriously.

Negotiating a player's salary automatically comes with the idea that there is a risk that the guy will become irreparably damaged.
TheLeviathan Old-Timey Member Posted May 4, 2017 Posted May 4, 2017 If nothing else, I appreciate this being posted here. I didn't see much chatter about it until this thread.
Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted May 4, 2017 Posted May 4, 2017 No way in hell should Perkins give up the money owed to him. That's absurd. He provided a ton of value for the Twins AND took a contract under market value. Go and get paid, Glen. I only wish you could still pitch.

I will always be a fan.by all accounts a fantastic guy. In his public statements I have always appreciated his point of view and frequent candor, as well as his apparent ability to analyze situations/data. While I'm management in my career, I think Perk has done really great job speaking up for the players association and what he felt at the time was a bum deal... yet when the reconciliation came, he moved forward with what he and the team thought was best. He had a great stretch of years and it would be awesome if he could get close to them again soon. But I doubt it. I hope I'm wrong. Best of luck to Perkins in his continued rehab and whatever comes next.

Yup! Very great point. Glen was able to separate his business interests and personal feelings, a lot of people (especially early 20's males) have a really tough time doing this."It's not personal Mikey, it's business"
ashbury Verified Member Posted May 6, 2017 Posted May 6, 2017 He's on the DL. I'm not even sure the CBA would allow him to voluntarily retire. Not to pile on, but in this context the player can do what he wants and the DL has precious little to do with that player himself. The DL is for the team. It lets them stash an injured player and add a replacement without having to make a roster move they don't want to have to make. The 60-day DL (the one Glen's on) lets them add another player to the 40-man roster without having to expose any player to waivers to make room. The 10-day DL lets them add someone to their 25-man (active) roster, likewise without having to option someone or designate someone for assignment. There might be some paperwork for the team if it's a multi-year contract remaining for a player with a career-ending injury. And the player is still bound to the team until his existing contract expires, in case he decided to mount a comeback. But if the player under medical advice has decided he is done, he is done. (As has already been discussed, there's no good reason he should forego any money owed to him.)
