So Julie and I are planning to be at Disney at the time this opens. Betting there will be lots of special events there for this.

Not a lot there? Within another hour or two, 10000000 posts will be on the internet examining why the ships are trailing red smoke, and not blue or green or black.....let alone what "balance" means.

That balance line in the first SW film has really messed up the mythology for me. Is it balance we need, or good we need? What is balance? And no, I'm not going down the rabbit hole of the internet on that today. Not. Happenin'. I hope.

I like the balance argument. It's fun.

But I just refuse to read too much into any trailer with that little action in it. It's a bunch of teasing without much meat on the bone.

Of all things, this is what stood out to me the most:

Because I immediately thought of this:

that poster is so awesome for the curves on Fischer, and the buff Hamel

Yeah, it's pretty funny. I believe that poster was mostly discarded and instead Fox used this poster, which is a lot more accurate regarding the look of the cast.

But that star still stands out to me in the trailer. It's so similar that has to be intentional.

So we have Luke at the original Jedi temple, Rey pouring over an ancient manuscript with a lightsaber symbol, the title "The Last Jedi", Rey's lightsaber combining blue/red, and I think we have the makings of a film that's going to do one of two things:

1. Explore the origins of the Jedi Order and what came before it

2. A shift away from the dogmatic light/dark principles of the prequels Order

True, but I had speculated that's what the film is about before trailer released. It makes sense given the title. I never thought the Jedi would die, I thought the order would likely move on in some capacity.

They already dangled that idea with the Sith/Knights of Ren. It makes sense the Jedi would react similarly.

So the Jedi will be Gandalf the Grey, and not in white?

on a side note, it's always been interesting to me that the stormtroopers are in white, not black....

Gandalf the Many-Colored!

I suspect Stormtroopers are white simply because it films better. It's easy to make a stark profile in white, not so easy in black.

I hope so! That was my favorite of all the films. I'm excited for the movie. The last 2 have been really well done. I'd even like another spin off like rogue one.

I predict Empire Strikes Back with flashier visuals.  Like the first one.

*Ducks*

One big part of the Empire Strikes Back was Luke meeting Yoda and his apprenticeship. That storyline will certainly repeat.

And Rey is going to meet her true parents.

As a serious aside...do true Star Wars fans feel cheated at all yet?  That this entire three-part conclusion is borderline trolling?

Why would I feel cheated? They are entertaining. I would like a bit more originality, but I paid twice, and probably will again on rerelease.... For both. No complaints from me

Fair enough.  I'm just curious, if they suddenly said we're going to continue the Indiana Jones saga and then he went hunting after the same stuff with the same gags and same character archetypes along for the ride....I might feel a bit cheated.  It's essentially not what was promised, but just a remake in many ways.

So I was just curious how people perceived that.  I'm sure, if you're a huge fan, anything new (no matter how derivative or unique it is) is cause for celebration in and of itself.

I admit, I'm easier to please than some. I'm also not tied into CANON like some. So I might not be the best small sample for this question...

I don't mind the same plot bones, but I would hope they throw in a couple twists involving main characters.

I really hope that they go in a fresh direction. I like The Force Awakens but it seemed like I was reading a really long first three chapters of a book where they are character building and the main story is yet to come. This is what was so great about the original (A New Hope). Limited characters and a new storyline. In The Force Awakens there were so many characters because they retained the old characters but introduced an entire new set and they recycled the storyline for the most part.

I was mostly joking comparing the two apprenticeships. This is the route of the Jedi and repeats many times. They have a lot of possibilities of diverging from Ep IV-V-VI.

At some point I have to believe that Kylo Ren either comes back to the Jedi. Probably ending in his heroic death that turns the tide of the entire war.

I understand people being pissed with Force Awakens - I liked it a great deal actually, but it is recycled. That movie was made to re-energize the not so nerdy fan base and to bring in the younger folk.

Ryan Johnson is not like Abrams, and he is not tasked with what Abrams had to do.

I think we have something good to look forward to.

I think if they continue to be artful on the scale of homage, rather than recycling bin, I'm totally game for echoes and callbacks to the original trilogy.  If they do it right, they can build a great foundation for irony within the last film.    I see more intentionality and artfulness than I do cheapness, at least as far as Force Awakens was concerned.
