Duffey deserves to be demoted

What Trader Rob said Sunday was, Mejia was at 127 innings and they were originally thinking about capping him at 130, but would give him one more start.

Thanks.  It is confusing because Molitor said the day before that the limit was 150 innings:

And even on Tuesday, Molitor told Derek Wetmore that he expected Mejia to make "a few" more starts at AAA:

Perhaps Molitor was confused about the number?  130 does seem like a more logical target, although Mejia's spot will only come up 2-3 times before the end of Rochester's season anyway.  (FWIW, I found the Sunday podcast and Antony said "he may make another start and I'm not sure how much he's going to pitch after that the rest of the season", so he wasn't quite laying down a hard limit at 1 more start yet either.)

How about make him earn the right to pitch out of the pen by getting in done out of the pen in AAA.

He's not entitled. He should be able to fail miserably and his penalty be "moved" to the pen. It's not like he's on a multi-year 50 million dollar contract....make him start earning it and maybe he will step up

The potential reliever angle is another in support of optioning Duffey (preferably some time ago already).  He's already burned his option this year.  If we wait, we will likely have to burn another option on him in 2017 just to try him in the pen, whereas if he got that experience right now, he could potentially make the roster as a reliever next spring and not use an option.

No.

This is exactly what awful seasons are for. Let him sink or swim over 50 starts, if there is even a chance that he can be close to what he was last year.

There is nothing to lose. Plus, as Brandon noted, there is nobody besides Wheeler who is banging on the door.

Why not move him to bullpen?  I have always thought he would end up being a nice reliever.  Give the 7th or 8th and I think with his curve and usually pretty good control on his fastball he would do well out there.

Agree with moving him to the pen.  The issue for any pitcher who has 2 pitches is that both of those pitches need to be "on".  If Duffy doesn't have command of his curve, hitters sit on his fastball and that has proven to be very hitable.  What he really needs to do is develop a third pitch regardless of whether he goes to the pen or stays in the rotation.

We have no one else.  That's the response.

And we're seeing ample evidence of what his role should be next year - reliever.  And hopefully that will free Trevor May from the bondage of stupidity that banished him there.

Wish granted. Now what will we end up with instead? When is Gonsalves supposed to start next? If it's tonight, is he up next?

Duffey has 1 mlb caliber pitch.  If he doesn't have the ability to throw it exactly where he wants it that day, strike or ball, hitters are just going to take it and wait for a belt high 90 mph straight fastball.  I think the pen is his only real option and even there his fastball is really going to have to play up.
