I'm not sure why there was not a thread dedicated to the promotion of Dean but my real first name is Dean so I should start one I guess...

So, how long does he stay?

What % chance do you give him sticking as a long reliever?

Is it ok to have a first name as a last name or vice versa?

Jimmy Dean thought it was okay. Richard Dean Anderson even thought it was a good middle name.

An effective lefty long reliever is a good thing. Still, right now nobody gets a better than 50% chance.

Dean's chances of staying on the roster until the end of the season are very good.

Dean's chances of staying on the roster through December, less so.

He was good last year, but it seems like that was a fluke.  One has to think he is playing his final months of baseball.  At least he gets to finish his career in the bigs.

I'll agree with this. Not sure we'll see any more Milone, and Dean can be the long reliever for the next two weeks and then it's September, so might as well keep him up.

I like the way the kid pitches and his approach, his stuff just doesn't play up. Not as a starter anyway. Perhaps he can be effective in the bullpen. But with other guys that need a look see why just recycle Dean again?

Isn't it a little funny how Andrew Albers and Pat Dean are basically the exact same pitcher? You can never have too many soft tossing lefties I guess.

Edit: I just saw that Albers was DFA'd yesterday.

Right now, with his stats at Rochester and his limited major league work, I don't see Dean being grabbed by anyone and kept on the 40-man into spring training.

At the most, he will get a minor league contract.

At best, the Twins promoting him again means he will give a greater consideration to sign back with the Twins.

We already have Rogers for long lefty relief.

I don't think Taylor Rogers is a long reliever, despite him being a starter in the minors. I think he's a late inning guy when a couple left handed hitters are due up.

Pat Dean's got a few more mph than Albers ever had. Dean can bring it in the low 90's, which might not seem like much, but it's a crucial extra bit of velocity. Also, I think Dean's repertoire is better than what we saw from Albers, who doesn't appear to have much left. To me Dean looks like a middle to back of the rotation starter on this Twins team. His stuff is decent, his tempo is really good, and he's a tough competitor that doesn't let a couple runs get him down.

While we wait for better starters to emerge from the minors, we might just find Pat Dean quietly being a regular member of the rotation.

Pat Dean has a couple MPH on Albers, but Dean has horrible minor league K numbers, and Albers' minor league numbers are better pretty much across the board.

I doubt Pat Dean is ever a regular starter in an MLB rotation.

For a guy with a 5.36 ERA, I suspect this is more about keeping his self-esteem while he allows more runs, rather than a mark of effectiveness. :)

Also 5.56 ERA at AAA this year, and career ~4.74 ERA at both AA and high-A... Dean's 2015 is looking pretty strongly like a fluke, I must say.

Be ready to give a guy a mulligan for one out of character bad season - don't get too excited over one out of character breakthrough season - always take age and experience into account when looking at minor league numbers. I don't know why these remain esoteric principles in some quarters. :)

Dean has never profiled as better than cup o' coffee major leaguer. Somehow he's being pushed into a greater role than that.

By getting to AAA, Dean probably achieved beyond his physical talent on brains and guile. He's immensely popular with his teammates and with the Rochester fans, and just seems like a guy you want to root for to me. But, yeah, I think we want pitchers with more raw talent holding down the last spot in the rotation or occupying a bullpen spot.
