Albers DFAd, O'Rourke up

Two call ups this week have resulted in a lack of a thread so here is the second one. This one is to discuss O'Rourke and his call up..

I used to see O'Rourke as a potential contributor out of a healthy pen. A guy that could come in at the key moment and get that guy or two out that he specialized in getting out. I looked forward to his call up and imagined his success. Now, With our rotation requiring more from the pen and having already been called up and sent down, there is little luster associated with this move.

Is the luster gone because of misuse his first time up or was it based on guys opinions that watch our (and only our) minor league teams? Is he a diamond in the rough or is this just going to be rough? Does he have a useful role if used well?

Are the other guys that will soon be mentioned in this thread just overhyped by us on TD or do they really have what it takes to be successful bull pen pieces? Should they really have been the ones called up or Are we just looking past O'Rourke, Dean, Wheeler, etc... Based on fools gold of those others that were picked higher in the draft or have received more hype?

I hope for O'Rourke to blow our minds and succeed like we never imagined. I give that hope low odds of success but maybe if used right, he will be a useful 1-2 out guy that could be used 4-5 times a week in the right situations.

Molitor was quoted in the Strib as saying he planned on using O'Rourke for 2+ innings at a time.

This was posted in the 'Albers DFA'd, Pitcher coming up' thread. At the time we didn't know who, but once we did, discussion ensued. I merged yours with that one, and changed the title to reflect the now known O'Rourke call up.

I'll never forget the Nationals game.  Bullpen was spent;  only O'Rourke and [i believe] Tonkin remained.

O'Rourke fought to stay in and pitched 3.2 innings on 1 days rest.

One bad game in Houston killed his stats.  I think he's a good choice.

O'Rourke has completed two innings three times this year. He's gone more than two innings just once (the 3.2 inning stint that HitInAPinch mentioned above).

He's more of a 1-3 batter guy. and yes, he's so good against lefties that he can fill a key role.

That's how he has and SHOULD be used, of course.

Not how Mollie plans to use him though. That could change, of course, but for now:

“After talking with the Triple-A staff, Ryan was the guy they recommended,” manager Paul Molitor said. “He’s been stretched out a little bit more than just being a left-handed specialist. … He’s fresh and I know I can get a couple of innings out of him.”

This is from Star Tribune. Mobile won't let me grab a link address.

Albers should not have been called up.  He was capable in the minors and we knew the Twins were not particularly interested in developing him further.

Last week he was employed.  Now he isn't.  The Twins chewed him up and spit him out again.  Sure, they'll probably sign him again to another minor league deal and he'll put on a smile and do whatever they ask.

Where are you getting this? To my knowledge he was Designated For Assignment. DFA means they intend to place him on a minor league roster, subject to various rules.

He got one or more days of MLB salary. He comes out ahead of just staying at Rochester for the time.

O'Rourke has done a solid job a few times when pressed for additional innings. But his role should be 1-3 batters as a LOOGY. I'm not big on such specialists, but with a 7 man bullpen, there is room for such a specialist.

But Light is an intriguing prospect and should be given a look if he continues to perform at Rochester well. Has Wimmer actually found a niche as a RP? As a former #1 pick who needs to be added or risk losing, the Twins should take a look. Just not sure O'Rourke is the right choice here.

Think I have to disagree on Melotakis. He's had a remarkable year when you see what he's done and remember he's coming back from TJ. I like him and his potential, but I think he's probably close to maxing himself out for this year.

Albers optioned back to Rochester. Apparently the waivers were required because he has a sufficient amount of service time?
