Waiver Trade Idea - E Santana

The American League playoff standings make for an interesting waiver wire trade market.  Can it generate the kind of interest and offer the non-roster talent that would make the Twins or you as fantasy Twins GM trade Ervin Santana?

Standings
--- Texas
0.5 Cleveland
1.0 Baltimore
1.0 Toronto
3.5 Boston
3.5 Detroit

I don’t think a team below Detroit in the American League would want to take on Santana.
Every team on that list would want Santana with the possible exception of Cleveland.  Some of those teams might need the Twins to eat some salary.

Detroit is currently first on the list because they are 00.1% behind Boston.  I don’t see Detroit being able to offer the non-roster talent to make the deal, but they would make a claim to keep Santana from getting to one of the other 5 teams named.

So I would wait until one of those teams falls at least 00.1% behind Detroit and hope to make a deal.  Let’s look at Boston, because they need Ervin Santana.

Michael Kopech is not on the BoSox 40-man roster.  He is currently on ranked #93 by Baseball America and #80 by MLB Pipeline.  Would Boston give up Kopech to improve their odds of making the playoffs?  I think Yes.

Is Michael Kopech enough to give up Ervin Santana?
I would want a little more.  How about:
1 of Mauricio Dubon (#12 Sox prospect on MLB Pipeline) or Roniel Roudes (#13) and
1 of Trey Ball (#14), Jake Cosart (#19), Bobby Dalbec (#21), or #23 Josh Pennington

Who says No?

The problem with August waiver wire trades is some other team could put a claim on him with no motivation whatsoever to make a deal for him. All it takes is a team like the Angels or the A's to put a claim on him to ruin this proposal.

I would be SHOCKED if the Red Sox gave up Kopech to get Erv.  I'm guessing they will use him as part of a package to go after a much better pitcher than Ervin this offseason

Ignoring the waiver difficulties, Kopech has some issues - PED ban, fight with teammates, strange mechanics - that probably scare off the Twins.

Well, there is a gentlemen's agreement not to claim a player unless you are blocking a rival, but I suppose Santana might be an edge case as non-contending teams could want to acquire him for 2017-2018.

I've seen it suggested by another poster that when a player goes on waivers, teams could contact the Twins before making a claim.  If a team like Oakland or the Angels talked to the Twins and had no interest in meeting our asking price, they'd probably pass on making a claim, leaving us to negotiate with contenders instead.

Even if an August trade does not happen, this idea should be explored at length in the off-season. I'm still of the belief if the Twins can get under the last 2 years of this contract, that would be ideal.

While certainly an interesting talker, I'm of the opinion at this point to hold onto him until the offseason and pursue a trade partner then.  That will bring any team trying to aggressively improve over the offseason into play.  Considering the fact that he wasn't dealt prior to the deadline, I doubt any team would make a deal for the Twins asking price.  Injuries change things, but I'm not sure dealing him at this point makes a lot of sense from the Twins perspective.

I think ESan is a problem for the next GM. I'd prefer to keep him personally as Gibson/Santana aren't  bad options and the rotation is already going to have it's fair share of new guys in Berrios, May, Duffey, Wheeler, Dean... and then there's Hughes, Milone, and Santiago.  I would guess Hughes starts in the pen and Milone is likely non-tendered.

If you think you can trade Santana for a borderline top 100 prospect then non contending teams are for sure going to claim him also since they can keep for the rest of the season and then trade him for a borderline top 100 prospect.

Santana isn't crazy valuable in the trade market but many teams (even non contending teams) would prefer to take Santana and the 2/25+M left on his contract rather than go after comparable FA's that are looking for 3-4+ years.

You do know the August waiver is revocable.

[sorry.  Had a tough day at work and misread your post. Your saying Santana wouldn't make it thru.  I get it. I misread some of the teams between the Twins and the BoSox.]

Ask the moon for Santana.  He knows how to pitch and get guys out.  The 3 k's tonight with guys on 2nd and 3rd showed that.  If the offer isn't right...we can revoke.  I don't see Detroit having enough left in their farm system to get us to trade Santana in division.

Seeing as Santana is under contract in 2017, even non-playoff teams might claim him. The Yankees could do it simply to prevent their division rivals having him next year.

If he gets traded, I think it has to be this off season.
