gunnarthor Old-Timey Member Posted June 6, 2016 Posted June 6, 2016 Oliver is (IMHO) better than Stewart and Colbert were at their peaks. http://money.cnn.com/2016/06/06/technology/john-oliver-medical-debt/index.html
Shane Wahl Verified Member Posted June 6, 2016 Posted June 6, 2016 http://money.cnn.com/2016/06/06/technology/john-oliver-medical-debt/index.html Oliver is (IMHO) better than Stewart and Colbert were at their peaks. That is correct.
Shane Wahl Verified Member Posted June 6, 2016 Posted June 6, 2016 I actually didn't see the story until posting.OH MY GOD THAT IS CORRECT. I am amazed by this heroic action (and it is). I know Occupy was doing that with student loans, but I think such collections have to spend much more to get the debt. $60,000 to relieve $15 million?!?!
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted June 6, 2016 Posted June 6, 2016 Interesting.....why don't more criminals do this, and then commit fraud?
TheLeviathan Old-Timey Member Posted June 6, 2016 Posted June 6, 2016 Yeah, Oliver is nothing short of revolutionary. If you aren't watching him, you should start.
ashbury Verified Member Posted June 6, 2016 Posted June 6, 2016 Oliver, Stewart and Colbert straddle a very strange but brilliant line between social satire and performance art, not simply comedy.
Craig Arko Old-Timey Member Posted June 6, 2016 Posted June 6, 2016 Oliver, Stewart and Colbert straddle a very strange but brilliant line between social satire and performance art, not simply comedy.Mark Twain, Will Rogers, and Bernard Shaw come to mind.

diehardtwinsfan Old-Timey Member Posted June 9, 2016 Posted June 9, 2016 Holy crap. I'm going to have to start watching him more. Don't really watch HBO's political stuff, but this might change that. On that note, an interesting debt relief concept might be to fund an organization that does just that. Wonder how that would work.
Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted June 9, 2016 Posted June 9, 2016 Holy crap. I'm going to have to start watching him more. Don't really watch HBO's political stuff, but this might change that.Last Week Tonight is probably the best takedown show on television right now. It doesn't matter whether you're conservative or liberal, Oliver attacks real issues and points out the damaging effects they have on Americans. It's the stuff no one else is talking about most of the time (for-profit universities, drone strikes, debt collection, payday loans, TV evangelism... the list goes on).
TheLeviathan Old-Timey Member Posted June 9, 2016 Posted June 9, 2016 Oliver clearly leans a little left, but it's hard not to in today's world. But he hasn't been shy about taking on anyone of any political persuasion. He's fearless, biting, and his staff clearly does their research. His show is appointment television for me and I can count the shows that have that distinction on one hand.
Badsmerf Verified Member Posted June 9, 2016 Posted June 9, 2016 It's only "common" to lean left because of the zealot social conservatism the gop has adopted in the last 10 years. Many progressive ideas are going to be a lot less partisan inn 20 years.
kab21 Verified Member Posted June 10, 2016 Posted June 10, 2016 This is what is missing from the Daily Show with Trevor Noah. Trevor mostly goes after soft targets that everyone knows about. I enjoy the Trump jokes or things that Trevor points out but they are mostly known. I actually learn about new topics when I watch Oliver.
