Spring Velocity Readings Update page

Today:  Berrios 93-96.  Plunked Travis Harris with a 95 and then after a walk plunked another with a 93. Not a good showing for him, or Santana who got hit around a lot including a homer by Trey Vavra.  Santana sat at 90-94

Moderator Note:

This thread is about ST velocity readings and the OP of this thread has already chimed in asking it remain on that track.  Out of respect for that poster, let's keep the discussion framed around spring training velocity and not let this turn into an argument about Tyler Duffey's worthiness as a starter (or anyone else for that matter).

Nice to see Gibson get a 95, even if it's not his out pitch.

Some of those Perkins fastballs seem a little off, even for spring training. I think of him as a 94-96 guy. I wonder what his readings were last march at this time or if he's purposefully doing something a little different in this last appearance.

YUK! And I don't mean funny "yuk". So much for coming to camp in better shape and ready for the season.

Again, none of this matters until April. Veteran players often have their own agenda in spring. It's about preparation, not production.

It's not a problem until Perkins throws a 91 mph fastball in a regular season game. I'll be somewhat concerned if Perkins can't regularly hit 94 on March 25th. I'll be legitimately worried if he can't hit 94 on April 4th.

I liked what I saw of Landa in the 1 IP he threw for the Twins about 8-9 days ago. I don't have gun #'s but it looked like at least 95. (Not disputing your #'s, just saying my curiosity was piqued. I may have to adopt him actually).

The Radar in the Hammond Stadium scoreboard is notoriously fast.  I have seen Duensing hit 97 there once.   My readings in the back fields are from a handheld gun.

Cutter: 87-89

Change: 81-84

According to this article   http://m.twins.mlb.com/news/article/167965732/minnesota-twins-prospects-at-spring-training "Eades looked very sharp in his first outing the other day. His fastball was up to 97 mph and he was mixing four pitches in a two-inning stint," Radcliff said. "It's the hardest we've seen him throw, and it'll be interesting to see if he can sustain that velocity."

I haven't really expected much from Eades. Definitely not an increase in velocity. Maybe he will surprise us?

Eades used to pitch at the mid 90s the year he was drafted.  Then surprisingly his velocity decreased as a pro.  Now it seems to be back, which is great news.

Nolasco today (Back Fields hand-held radar)

90-92 Fastball

73-77 mph Curveball,

82-84 mph Slider

80-82 mph split finger change

Posted

That curveball was just plain nasty warming up and the slider had a lot of movement on it too.  Not nearly the movement the ball he threw to Palka had in the 2nd though. I retrieved that ball from the back yard of that  medical building.

Story about Perkins from last spring:

http://twinsdaily.com/_/minnesota-twins-news/spring-training-2015/glen-perkins-looking-to-move-on-r3507

In short, his FB was at 91-92 and he was starting to feel his age. He was just coming off his contract extension. He talked about busting out his change up at some point later in his career, but as it happened did not throw it last year.

IF...that is where he sits roughly it does not look like a good mix. The difference from FB to change is way to close to be consistently effective.

Yep. While I'm not concerned right now, if he's throwing 90-92 in early April, that's a big problem going forward. He needs to sit at 93-94 to come anywhere close to replicating his 2014 season.

Talking about Nolasco or Perkins? ;)

Agreed, that's why he just needs to junk that change.  It just has never worked for him.

90-92 Fastball

73-77 mph Curveball,

82-84 mph Slider

80-82 mph split finger change

Here is Nolasco's pitch/velocity chart done by the team:

While Nolasco was on Field 3 pitching the first five innings, Glen Perkins started the game on Field 4.  Perk was economical in his one inning getting a strikeout (all sliders to the kid).

90FB, 88FB, 81SL, 90FB, 90FB, 80SL, 80SL, 81SL (K), 80SL, 92FB

The slider looked real good  and despite the lack of fastball velocity, it had good movement.
