NY Times: Sano dealt with huge loss last year.

Tyler Hepner with a very nice article on Sano in the NY Times. Maybe others were aware of this story, but I just saw it today. In November of 2014, Miguel Sano became a father. About a week later, his daughter died due to a heart defect.

The article talks about how he really struggled at times in the second half. Doug Mientkiewicz was very important, talking to him and helping him. He's got a good support group.

Obviously, he came back in June to performing like we knew he could. We talked a lot about how coming back from Tommy John caused his slow start last year in AA but this certainly adds a lot.

It's so important, in my opinion, to remember that we don't know the full story of what's going on it these guys' lives.

We don't really know much about these guys. We may hear or read a lot of second, third and forth hand stuff but what does it really tell us? Not much to my way of thinking.

I mean, it's good to give him space where needed...but where was the MN media on this? I feel like the NY Times shouldn't be the one I learn this from.

This speaks tons about Sano's makeup, leaving his private life at home and not making it a show, like others do.  And kudos to Mientkiewcz for silently helping him through it, while respecting his privacy.

I actually think the TC media deserves kudos for allowing Sano time to grieve and attempt to move past this difficult time in his life without having to worry about an even brighter spotlight than he already had as a baseball player.  When your job is dependent on clicks and eyeballs on your articles this must have been difficult to pass up.

I don't think anyone in the Twin Cities media knew about it. If someone did, I'd be proud of them for not writing it especially if Sano asked them not to. My guess is that no one knew.

It's a story that needs to be told but I'm good with allowing him privacy. I also think it's very impressive that it didn't come out for 18 months. It means a lot of people were able to keep it quiet (Mientkiewicz, Sano, others that were aware of it)

In this day and age, I think there's more to be said for keeping someone's private life private than there is for splashing it all over the front page. This is a terrible loss, but it's none of my business if Sano doesn't want it to be.

Absolutely, remember when we used to be worried he was too much of a show-off or had some kind of attitude issue?

The kid is passionate.  I, for one, love to root for people passionate about life and what they do.  This just further cements me as a Sano fanboy.  I hope, in the future, he's able to have another child and enjoy that thrilling ride as well.

I agree with everything said (when has that happened here), but I'm still surprised that it "broke" via NY instead of MN. They could have given distance but still written a piece between Nov-March. And, if they had known, I believe they would have.

I'm with Seth. I think it was totally under wraps. (Which is fine, it's his personal life.)

Very surprised no one here ( Minnesota) knew or heard about this tragic event.

Thoughts and prayers for him and his family.....
