On this note, this can't be good for Jose Reyes, who is reportedly being taken to trial.

So it's not enough games to delay his ability to become a FA after this season. Not sure it mattered either way for the Yankees. If he does well this season, they have the money to resign him anyway.

In regards to Reyes, yeah, he's toast.

Man, their bullpen is going to just be awful the first 30 games! :)

On the fantasy baseball side of things, this throws a an interesting twist into where you draft him. Where do you guys draft him? How much do you spend in a $260 auction draft?

He seems happy to accept the ruling. Being able to become a Free Agent must be the kicker for him to not appeal as he said he would. I wonder what would have happened if the suspension had been for 46 or more games and delayed that for a year.

"Today, I accepted a 30-game suspension from Major League Baseball resulting from my actions on Oct. 30, 2015," Chapman said in a prepared statement. "I want to be clear, I did not in any way harm my girlfriend that evening. However, I should have exercised better judgment with respect to my actions, and for that I am sorry. The decision to accept a suspension, as opposed to appealing one, was made after careful consideration. I made this decision in an effort to minimize the distractions that an appeal would cause the Yankees, my new teammates and most importantly, my family. I have learned from this matter, and I look forward to being part of the Yankees' quest for a 28th World Series title. Out of respect for my teammates and my family, I will have no further comment."

Wow, he writes really well considering English is not his native language.

Being serious, I wonder how many members of the Yankees public relations and legal departments were involved in crafting that statement.

How does MLB have the power to suspend him?  I didn't think they had that in the CBA?

I have to admit, I hate sports leagues suspending players for off the field stuff.  That should be between the player and his team.  It seems like the league is more concerned with PR and I don't want baseball to get a Goodell problem.

MLBPA and MLB came to an agreement last year about domestic violence.

It isn't between the players and teams, in any league, because the unions want consistent treatment, and not to have a team acting on its own (since that is more likely to create situations of trying to get out of contracts and stuff).

I think there are some people who think MLB has a duty to be the ethics/morality police. They have a domestic violence policy, and I think 30 games (at more than $2mil lost) is a good starting point for an altercation in which the police filed no charges. A weapon was fired. Yes.

I work for the Coast Guard, and in today's climate, if you get a DUI, the Coast Guard will show you the door. And domestic violence is a career killer too. But I am in a business which requires the public trust, in which judgment matters and you're never "off the clock." If you work at a hardware store, and you get drunk and have an incident in which you fire your gun and the police come and no charges are filed, should the hardware store fire you? Should they suspend you for a couple months? I think no. For the most part I think what happens at home happens at home, especially with the lack of formal charges. MLB is making a statement here, and likely Jose Reyes loses significant time. This is a step in the right direction.
