Aroldis Chapman?

What are the other incidents you refer to for Chapman? The 2 others that I am aware of have to do with his ex-girlfriend. One was a noise complaint when she was having a party at the house they then were cohabitating and he wasn't in town and the police came, and the other was again involving his ex-girlfriend/mother of child, when she allegedly used a key she wasn't supposed to have after the breakup and "broke in" to the residence she was no longer living in to get clothes and furniture, and it set off alarms. Are you aware of other reported incidents? I cannot comment on the he said she said about a choke with no evidence or marks, but find the gun play alarming, even if it was with him alone in his garage (with lots of others in the house).

He sure is a good pitcher.

From the Miami Herald:

In May 2012, Chapman was arrested outside Columbus, Ohio, for driving with a suspended license after being stopped for going 93 mph, at least the fourth time he was cited for speeding. The next day, news came out that Chapman was sued in civil court by a Cuban American man who claimed Chapman falsely accused him of being involved in human trafficking to curry favor with the Cuban government so he would be reinstated to the national team.

Color me baffled on this one.

Two months ago the guy hit and choked his girlfriend, then proceeded to fire a gun eight times inside a house.  Best case, he fired the gun to scare and threaten her.  Worst case he was firing at her, which is called attempted murder last I checked.

And about half the folks here are disappointed we didn’t trade for him, prior to even knowing which one.

Last time I checked, he has not been convicted of anything.  Has he?   As a matter of fact no charges were even filled because the cops have found conflicting stories when they talked to witnesses.

Nothing like being convicted of a crime he was not even accused of committing...

The story from the papers is here.

The reality is most cases of domestic violence end without any charges. The victim either stays with the person and does not press charges, changes the story, or is too fearful to move forward. Frends of mine that are police officers find this to be the most frustrating thing about their jobs

He also did admit to firing a gun multiple times inside a residence.  The most likely scenario there is he was trying to scare/intimidate his girlfriend by doing so.  Whether charges are filed and he is found guilty is irrelevant in my opinion.

So I can see a situation where he is not found guilty but a team like the Twins wants nothing to do with him.  That is totally fine by me.  At the very least, I don't fault teams for waiting for the MLB investigation and potential punishment to be doled out. Frankly, with the return so low I almost wonder if the Reds know something the Yankees don't.

The police report and the subsequent newspaper reports said that he fired the gun inside a garage.  No mention on whether anyone else was around or whether the garage was attached or detached.

The rest are guesses.

If he actually wanted to kill her, he would have thrown a baseball at her. He is no threat with a gun.

Thank you!

I did not know of these incidents.

On the surface, someone angry at being accused by Chapman of being involved in human trafficking doesn't doesn't raise a flag to me, and neither does the accusation if Chapman knew it to be true. And speeding a bit doesn't really either, as all drivers speed, all the time, whether it is 5 or 10 or 15 mph or more over the limit. It is the drunk (or not drunk according to them but over the limit if tested) drivers that think they are OK to drive and drive the speed limit that are the criminals and way more dangerous.....) Driving on a suspended license..... probably not smart to do in conjunction with speeding, but not really a huge deal. Where are the videos when you need them, eh?  The shooting in the garage is alarming.

It is pretty amazing how well some people can successfully "guess" when someone is lying. It is quite a talent, actually. Children, spouses, co-workers....... sometimes the evidence is in the expressions, micro-expressions, and other behavior, and conclusions correct, regardless whether it meets the "court of law test", which certainly isn't the greatest test, as history has shown.

I cannot make a judgement on the "hitting and choking" his girlfriend accusation, as there was absolutely no physical evidence reported able to be collected to substantiate that claim, and that was immediately after the incident happened. Not all states allow one to shoot a gun inside a house when not in self defense (crazy Florida lets you have a shooting range on residential property!) Shooting the gun, even alone in the garage with the other people around....... that is just nuts and certainly would intimidate me, and I would be leaving immediately if not sooner.

Chapman sure can pitch, and that is not a guess.

Everybody can climb off their high-horse, pull their shorts out of their crack, (relieving the "wedgie") and take a deep breathe--Chapman won't be pitching for the sanctimonious, righteous Twins, but for the "damnYankees".  It serves them right!

I don't expect the Twins to aim as high as a guy like Chapman - not right now, anyway - but I'm dismayed at their inability to get anything of note done about the bullpen to this point.

If the Twins pursue a guy of Chapman's ability, I'd like to see them go big and get a guy who will be here for 2-3 years, not one... And it makes the most sense to do that via free agency.

I'm not in love with the idea of giving up significant farm pieces for a one-year rental of a reliever.

YMMV, obviously.

If he is suspended for more than 40 games he will not become a free agent at end of the season so there is a good possibility the Yankees made a steal of a deal.

Maybe this is a new moneyball niche. Trade for a guy shortly after a domestic incident with shots fired, but before an MLB ruling. You are certainly going to pay less than you otherwise would.

Wrong year for a deal like Chapman. 2016 is the show-me year for a lot of Twins prospects, including some of those fire-ballers in AA and AAA. It's time for Alex Meyer, Nick Burdi, J.T. Chargois and Jake Reed to step up and show they can blow heaters past some major league hitters. This the start of the big harvest, when all our patience as fans should start to pay off.

As fans, we should not expect 2016 to be a big playoff year. But it should be another step forward towards that goal, with more young power arms arriving from the minors. Of course, things never work out that neatly. Guys get hurt, or just don't pan out, or need yet another year to learn how to throw a baseball without hitting the mascot, or hold a runner without having a nervous breakdown, etc.

I wanna see some young power arms in spring training. Some of these guys could be good.

Or the Attica Astros; the Rikers Islanders or the Sing-Sing Wild Wings.

You wonder why the Twins didn't make an offer for Aroldis Chapman?

Nope, never thought for a second they would.

Aroldis Chapman will not face any charges from the Oct. incident. However, he still may face discipline by the MLB with their new rules in place. What have we learned? That this is a guilty until proven innocent world, and the Yankees got an absolute steal of a trade.

I have been beating the "Trade for Chapman" drum for well over a year, the guy is an immense talent and the Yankees got an absolute steal. I understand why the Twins wouldn't want to trade for the guy when the legal issues were still unknown (plus what he did was pretty awful ****) but I have a feeling, even without any legal issues the Twins never would have had interest anyways. BIG trades is not something Ryan has ever really done.

New York is probably a pretty good place for him though, it's pretty much impossible to own a gun here, so at least that problem is immediately solved. Hopefully he can learn from his mistakes and become a better person, it has happened before (see: Brandon Marshall)
