GOP presidential candidates offer prayers — not solutions on gun control — after San Bernardino massacre

As horrible as it sounds, it's probably a good thing if we continue to see a rapid-fire succession of shootings up into the election season.

America needs to be grabbed by the shoulders and shaken until it snaps out of its delusional state. Other than seeing report after report of dead civilians, I don't know how else it will happen.

I'm all in favor of gun ownership rights but come on, a little temperance is needed here. We need to apply some common sense to this situation.

I didn't realize the Daily News was a leftist rag.

So leftist that they endorsed Romney vs Obama!

He makes good points, but I just can't bring myself to respect the Dalai Lama due to his covering up of rapes/molestation and his misogynistic views and behavior.

Call it "sensationalism" if you will, but the Daily News brings up a great point, THESE politicians have failed to do anything to even try to fix the problem.

you assume that politicians are able to fix this problem.  I'm not so certain this should be taken as fact.

It's going to take A LOT to fix it, however the politicians are the ones who have the ability to at least TRY to make a difference, they have shown indifference time and time again anytime anything even resembling "control" or "background checks" comes up.

Criminal laws never eliminate the kind of behavior it seeks to punish, yet we still have those laws.  The standard shouldn't be 'fixing' the problem, it should be progress towards fixing the problem.

CONSPIRACY!! The left is planning these shootings to get the vote!

No, just kidding. But you have to be careful about saying things like that or you'll get responses like that, and a lot of people would be dead serious. Imagine if you were a politician...

Yup, just look at all the sandy hook thruthers that are out there!

If Democrats want to make this a priority it's really simple.  Make a compramise on another issue and get Paul Ryan to agree with it.  It clearly isn't a priority of Democrats, but up until the point when everyone noticed this was a terrorist issue it seemed like a decent political play.

That's what's absolutely despicable. Reasonable gun control should not require compromise. That should be one of those things that there is near-unanimous support on, but Republicans have their NRA boxers on and no way it'd get out of the House because of that.

My faith in this being solved died after Sandy Hook.  If that didn't get it done, nothing will.

Same here.  As a primary teacher, the very notion of something like that happening to my kiddos or someone like them is horrifying.

And out of that we accomplished nothing other than having some idiots seriously arguing about arming teachers.

It fuels a lot of my opinions on this issue.  We have to win the culture war, it isn't what people want to hear because it doesn't sound like it's a fix.  But we aren't going to win this with legislation, not in the current climate of guns.  (And I hate saying that.  We should keep trying, but if we want legislation with teeth we have to win the battle of ideas)

They have more ability than you or I. That can probably be taken as fact.

I hadn't even heard that.  That's ridiculous.

[Paul Ryan] said part of the discussion surrounding mental health legislation is who should and shouldn't have access to guns, but he signaled that barring gun purchases by people on no-fly terror lists — as President Obama urged Wednesday — is not an option.

So win elections on the issue.   We have differing opinions on the issue, thats reality.  Democrats act like this is a really important issue in their talk, but in action they make it very clear it isn't.

It is reasonable to ban guns from the mentally ill, those on ther no fly list...  The problem is the moment a law like this is on the books the power to put a name on one of those lists is to much.  Another problem criminals will now have a way of finding out who isn't allowed to own guns. I don't need a gun as long as the criminals don't know if I have one, the moment they know I don't have one I need one.

It would be really nice to trust the government but much like black lives matter doesn't trust the cops and tea party groups don't trust the IRS it's not going to work that way.  Better to protect the 2nd ammendment then create the mess that this would cause.

That is not the point. Politics and parties should never, ever inhibit making laws that can better society, but that's not the case in America, sadly. We're faced with bought and paid for politicians, not people who actually care for the betterment of the country. All of these issues we lament - this is where the issue truly lies.

No, that'd be discrimination. So far no law has reached the US Supreme Court on the issue, but states have quickly changed their laws in the face of lawsuits from mentally ill on discrimination. You absolutely cannot assume someone mentally ill is incapable of safely owning and securing a firearm any more than someone who has no illness. Any law identifying a specific illness is just asking to bankrupt the state that passed it.

What biggentleben said...and anyway, I don't think this is a good argument because it wouldn't take the ability to mark someone as mentally ill for the government to take control of our lives. And if you're only concerned about people being unfairly told that they couldn't own a gun because they were mentally ill, I don't know...anyone who wants a gun that badly just might be.
