Predict the next trade

you realize free agent relievers don't cost us good players.. don't trade for one when the market is open with a bunch of them

Yep. But you also have to pick/realize who the right guy is, then bid for him against other teams and hope you are the winner. In a trade scenario, you are acquiring the player you want without getting in to a bidding war, and very possibly gaining a lower cost control situation. And in some cases, a younger player than a veteran FA.

FYI, last I heard Span had surgery which will likely cause him to be out past opening day, probably why the Nationals didn't make him a QO.

I knew he had hip surgery, but I didn't realize he would be out that long. That really blows considering he would miss all of spring training. I think i'd still take a look at signing him. The Royals are. Do you want to watch him smash the Twins, while playing for the Royals or some other team? Or would you rather him be a part of the solution here? I think he's a great fit even if he misses a week or 6.

Side benefit to signing span is even if he is out first 6 weeks it pretty much guarantees one or both of Kepler and Buxton break camp with the team. Depending on what else happens with the OF, one of those guys could play every day and hopefully earn a spot for good.

Brewers (Smith; Santana; Roache;) for  (Rogers; Meyers; Polanco; Goodrum; and Walker)

I am afraid the only thing that group of players will get you is the right to give Johan Santana a $138 million contract.

Interesting, although it does seem to fall into the common trap of piling up 40-man roster guys (I count 4 for the Twins, and 3 for the Brewers, assuming Roache and others are protected in advance of Rule 5).  Why the outfielders?  Santana projects as a corner guy, but he might be at the top of the Brewers CF depth chart right now, and Walker and Roache seem to cancel each other out for the most part.  Also, Goodrum is Rule 5 eligible again and will be a minor league free agent next winter, he doesn't really add much to a trade.

I could see Smith alone for part of that package, maybe Polanco + non-40-man prospect like Gonsalves, or Meyer + Rogers + non-40-man prospect, maybe?

I know this is crazy talk - but my gut tells me that TR is saving all his nickels and dimes to go after a front line starter in free agency.  I am not sure he will win the sweepstakes for the likes of Zimmerman, Cueto, Price or Greinke, but something tells me that he will make a play for at least one of them.

I think the Hicks trade signals that he doesn't want to spend big money on position players, which suggests a move in the rotation - again.  I also think they have done the mid-level thing to only a modest impact.  Something tells me that Pohlad is ready to go big with the hope that he can field a playoff team next year.

I messed that trade up :) - I meant Segeura (SS) and not Santana

No problem, you caught it before it was faxed to the league office. :)

With Segura, that would be a very compelling trade from Milwaukee's standpoint.  Actually not so good for the Twins anymore (I really don't care for Segura and would have no idea what to do with him).  Which demonstrates the difficulty of crafting these proposals!

According to Jeremy Nygaard Terry Ryan looked into Carlos Gonzalez during GM meetings. what do you guys think of that?

Expensive, $37 m over the next two years and likely some top 10 prospects to get him. Doesn't sound Terry like.

Even if it's true, the list of people Ryan has looked into but turned out to be too expensive (either by FA price or trade) is about 100 miles long.

Considering he's never traded for or signed a person who was, at the time, an established star in the majors, that line is about zero steps long..

It might not be CarGo (although in a a salary dump type deal I'd be happy with that), but I have to believe Ryan is going to add a starting OFer before opening day.

He's not going to go into the season with his current OF options.

I don't know what to think.  The Twins are not acting like the Twins so they may make a Free Agent Splash.  It would not surprise me if they signed a veteran outfielder on a 1 year deal.  I am thinking Drew Stubbs.  A right-hander with some power and can play center field.  On opening day, he can play center, with Rosario and Arcia on the corners.  Once Buxton is ready, he can platoon with Arcia.  Of course, this presumes Arcia gets things straightened out.  I could also see Raja Davis on a 1 year deal.  He could bat lead-off and the Twins looked into him a couple years ago.

The starter I see getting traded is Milone, because I think they keep Gibson since he still has upside.  Milone is still under team control and you know what you are going to get.  He is decent and left-handed.  We could get a B/B- type prospect or a decent veteran outfielder for him.  I can't think of a good trade partner off the top of my head, maybe to Seattle for Franklin Guiterrez, Atlanta for Markakis, Boston for Jackie Bradley.

The Twins need to, and will I believe, pick up a RH hitting OF to partner with Arcia. Not that that has to be his sole purpose. And they will also pick up a top reliever to join Perk and Jepsen. Now, whether either or both of these are acquired via trade or FA is debatable of course.

I don't know about the big front line pitcher addition, as mentioned. We already need to move someone, probably Nolasco. And if we did sign someone like Zimmermann, we'd have to move someone else. And we already May have the good problem of too many potential starters for 5 spots

I have to add, while Zimmerman is quality, he's not an "ace" by most definitions, and I don't know that he's any better than Hughes or Santana.
