Otto von Ballpark Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2018 Posted October 20, 2018 they are probably the #1 team in the country as far as giving back to the community and spending time with kids and patients at hospitals, I presume today's game was fulfilling the dying wish of some Nebraskan boy.

Badsmerf Verified Member Posted October 21, 2018 Posted October 21, 2018 (edited) There are some issues in dinkytown. The way I see it, they only have 2 marginally winnable games left. If they don't win next week, I might say zero. No amount of motivation can beat actual coaching. A 4 touchdown deficit in the first half is absolutely unacceptable. Getting blown out by a winless team is absolutely unacceptable. I'm not on the fire pj fleck train, but whatever he's doing isn't working. These types of performances are fireable offenses. mngopherguy Provisional Member Posted October 21, 2018 Posted October 21, 2018 Moral victory? Really feel the need to troll fellow Twins fans?
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted October 21, 2018 Posted October 21, 2018 Didn't pay close attention to the game but the big TDs I saw them give up in the first half were filled with fundamental mistakes. Missing tackles and breakdowns in coverage happen far too often. Fleck will have to try out a new DC next season...
TheLeviathan Old-Timey Member Posted October 21, 2018 Posted October 21, 2018 Yeah, there are some serious coaching issues. Coughlin looks like a possible talent on Sunday though, man is he good. Also....the Wildcat needs to go. Running the same option dive to the left every freaking play is just stupid. That's ridiculous.
Otto von Ballpark Old-Timey Member Posted October 21, 2018 Posted October 21, 2018 (edited) Really feel the need to troll fellow Twins fans?Wasn't trying to troll you, sorry. I don't think you were the only one with the moral victory angle last week. I am just hanging out on the lighter side of the discussion, that's all! Tackling was disappointing.
Badsmerf Verified Member Posted October 21, 2018 Posted October 21, 2018 I think all of us on this board want to see the team succeed. There are some of us that are a lot more cynical and skeptical than others.

Also....the Wildcat needs to go. Running the same option dive to the left every freaking play is just stupid. That's ridiculous. I'm not a fan of wildcat either at least outside of the red zone. I did like seeing Johnson in the backfield on passing downs to get him different looks. Coughlin is good, if Alex Reigelsperger can play as well next year as the other rush end (at least in passing situations) that would help a lot. We need to recruit a Coughlin yearly to compete. Hopefully Bargy then will be the next Coughlin.Reigelsperger etc. I still think at the end of the day, dline is the hardest spot to recruit. And I like what I see in the DE's they are recruiting. O.J. Smith was a good DT too, that's painfully obvious without him.

There are some of us that are a lot more cynical and skeptical than others. Skeptical is probably more fair than cynical......kind of have to have different outcomes to change thoughts.... for those saying it is all freshman, do we have to punt on expecting wins next year, because it will be all sophomores?
Mr. Brooks Verified Member Posted October 22, 2018 Posted October 22, 2018 Skeptical is probably more fair than cynical......kind of have to have different outcomes to change thoughts.... for those saying it is all freshman, do we have to punt on expecting wins next year, because it will be all sophomores? That's a myth anyway. 9 of 11 defensive starters are upperclassmen. 1 freshman, 1 sophomore. And, we just got steamrolled by a true freshman QB. But, yeah, some will say we do. I was told I can't expect a Big 10 win for 3 or 4 more years, a couple pages back.

Is improving considered punting, or should we expect a Rose Bowl? Glen Mason had 3 Big Ten wins total in his first two years. Jerry Kill had 4 Big Ten wins total in his first two years. Kirk Ferentz had 3 Big Ten wins his first two years and 4 wins total. Barry Alverez had 2 Big Ten wins total in his first two years. Do I need to continue? None of those coaches had a team as young either. That really shows how poorly Claeys was recruiting.
Mr. Brooks Verified Member Posted October 25, 2018 Posted October 25, 2018 We also read a few pages back that you would be back after the season...What's the point? Be honest, could the level of play sink low enough between now and the end of the season that you'd change your mind? I don't gather that you would, so what difference does it make to you if I wait until after the year to make any judgments?
Mr. Brooks Verified Member Posted October 25, 2018 Posted October 25, 2018 Is improving considered punting, or should we expect a Rose Bowl? That really shows how poorly Claeys was recruiting. So how many Big 10 wins are reasonable to expect next year? I don't think anyone expects a Rose Bowl. How about at least hanging within 10 points in a Big 10 game? That'd at least be a step in the right direction. I think the complete lack of competitiveness in these games is what is causing impatience. People might be more willing to see a light at the end of the tunnel if they were competing, but just not mature enough to know how to seal the deal yet. That's not the case though. They just get clobbered week in and week out, even to other struggling programs and other new coaching staffs. Where is the progress?

Fleck took over an established solid team, and has turned it to **** so far. Maybe Claeys wouldn't have done any better, but coming within a yard of beating Michigan to getting stomped by a 0-6 Nebraska team is notable. Fleck did not inherit a mess like Kill, or Mason. Fleck also has a new stadium, new facilities, a great economy for opportunities post college. The more I think about it, the less excuses he has. The season is not over, so I'm not judging until it is, but... I don't like what I see and neither should anyone else.

LaBombo Verified Member Posted October 25, 2018 Posted October 25, 2018 His style isn't my cup o' tea, but I'm rooting for Fleck and will withhold judgement for another year. That being said, he seems to be on track to follow the recent U of M tradition of hiring a coach whose only job is to make us retroactively appreciate the guy he replaced. Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted October 25, 2018 Posted October 25, 2018 It's not like the program is missing out on another great coach who will turn it around faster. Might as well play this out like every other coach.

Struggling programs? Ohio St., Iowa, Maryland? lol.
mngopherguy Provisional Member Posted October 25, 2018 Posted October 25, 2018 What does any of that have to do with this coach? And, where did anyone here say Rose Bowl? Seriously? OK I guess I'll play along. Maybe it's suggesting that just about every other coach that's been around rebuilding a new program struggles in the first few years? 4 prime examples related directly and indirectly to the U is not enough? Rose Bowl. I was just trying to be as unrealistic as a few other here.
mngopherguy Provisional Member Posted October 26, 2018 Posted October 26, 2018 None of them took over a team that went 5-4 in the big ten, and 9 wins overall the year before. The season is not over, so I'm not judging until it is, but... I don't like what I see and neither should anyone else. Fleck didn't inherit a mess? Then why do we need 53 freshmen on the roster? There's zero depth period. There are 33 upper class men period on the team.Of which 7 are walk on's who never really were in to play. 5 of the 33 are on special teams. 7 are currently unable to play. There's not established team. 33 of 112 are upper class men. It's the opposite. Great economy? So other teams are not in the same economy? Kill and Claey's had the same stadium. Athlete's village just opened lol, and it just put Minnesota on par with rest of the teams in conference. It's not near what Nebraska, Michigan, Penn St., and Ohio St. have.
mngopherguy Provisional Member Posted October 26, 2018 Posted October 26, 2018 It's not like the program is missing out on another great coach who will turn it around faster. Might as well play this out like every other coach. And could you imagine trying to hire a coach when you didn't even let the last guy have his players reach their upper class men years? They wouldn't get a top coach at all, no one would want to deal with a rebuild and delusional "fans".
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted October 26, 2018 Posted October 26, 2018 I'll ask again....can we expect wins next year, or is it "too many sophomores"? I'm asking when we can expect wins, since we can't expect them this year.
Badsmerf Verified Member Posted October 26, 2018 Posted October 26, 2018 I'm not debating this with you until this season is over. You think Fleck took over the same types of programs as Kill and Mason, and that Mason had the same facilities. We obviously don't have the same expectations.
Mr. Brooks Verified Member Posted October 26, 2018 Posted October 26, 2018 The Ohio ST. game was within ten points until 2 minutes left. Struggling programs? Ohio St., Iowa, Maryland? lol.You mean the Ohio St. that got destroyed by a Purdue program whose staff was hired the same year as Fleck, and was maybe the worst program in the country when they took over? And I assume it's just coincidence that you left off Nebraska, who was 0-6 when they played us? You also didn't answer my question. That's my problem. I'm willing to be patient, but nobody will put a concrete expectation on paper. And I suspect they won't do it because they want to continue to defend Fleck no matter what the results are, no matter how long they continue. They can't do that if they commit to an expectation and it's not met.
