Mets get: Clippard and 1 million dollars (wut?)

A's get: Casey Meisner- Minor leaguer, 20 years old, RHP, just got promoted to A+ ball. 3rd round pick a couple years ago, not the worst prospect but nothing special either (7.2 k/9 this year)

Twins could have easily gotten him without giving up anything that would be missed, hopefully they pull the trigger soon on some RP help.

I guarantee the Twins were involved and got outbid on this one.  How could we not have been?  I wonder what the A's wouldn't take...

Casey Meisner was the Mets' ninth-best prospect in Amazin' Avenue's midseason rankings. Meisner has split time this year between the Savannah Sand Gnats and the St. Lucie Mets. He has a 2.35 ERA in 111 innings across the two levels with 7.2 strikeouts per nine innings and just 2.2 walks per nine.

That was a bummer.  Aaron Slegers is a good comparable.  Ryan could had bettered that.  They have so many C+, B- type of prospects that they should be able to part with them right now... I'd give them Hu in a heartbeat, FWIW.

As posted in another thread, the Twins most comparable player may be Gonsalves. Both were early 2013 picks with similar assents. Gonsalves is a LH with a better K-rate. No way would I deal him for Clippard, who will certainly test the FA waters this winter.

I posted this in the other thread.

Gonsalves >>> Meisner

He has outperformed him in the basic stats (ERA) and the peripherals (9.9k/9) (0.2 HR/9) and is a LHP to boot which helps a lot when it comes to valuing a guy this low in the minors.

I don't know who the equivalent would be, but it would be someone "lower" regarded then Gonsalves in this system, especially when adding in the million the A's tossed into the deal.

No way.   Consalves is a top 10 Twins' prospect at this point, plus 2 years younger.

In terms of value that is a spot on comparable and I would give that up to, especially when you consider the 1 million. Siegers has slightly less upside, but has shown results at a higher level. His nice BB/K ratio makes him a better bet to eventually make it  as a bullpen guy or cheap 5th starter option someday.

Yeah, and to your point earlier, the Twins have a ton of C+/B- prospects, it's not going to hurt to get rid of a couple of them.

Here's what Met's fans think.

I think I'd have trouble giving up Hu or Gonsalves, but the fact that we have both of them plus guys like Lewis Thorpe and Berrios and Stewart who appear to be much closer....

Fans always over-rate their own prospects, also what are the Met's concerned about in regards to young pitching? They are the one team in baseball that basically has 5 very good young pitchers currently at the major league level.

The only way I would be against this move as a Mets fan is because it eats up $2 million, and they may not have any more payroll flexibility to add a much needed bat.

I'd also trade Hu in a second for Clippard.

I wonder what the Twins offered, if anything.

Interesting enough Ryan all but guaranteed the 25 would be different on Aug 1. Must have aomethingsomething planned, but Clippard would have been nice. Maybe the As didn't want anything.

Sure.  He signed Micheal Bowden last week, and about to dive head first in the dumpster again.

As do General Managers for the Twins.

I don't see any way to defend not being able to better that offer.

There's a couple days left, but still.

To the poster who disagreed with me that money talks when dealing with OAK--$1MM added to sea seal this deal.  So far, the Twins are a  no-show in the deadline trade market.  I could speculate that the Twins weren't outbid--they didn't bid.  One can hope that the "pieces" that would have netted Clippard were a part of some other "deal" (that obviously hasn't happened!) and thus we are "in limbo".  But, I fear, that is wishful thinking...

Really, any of the A ball arms for Clippard except for probably Burdi and Jay, and the Twins come out ahead. Clippard is solid and bullpen is a huge need for this team right now. I'd love to know what the A's were asking from us. Come on Terry!

Also, TINSTAAPP.

That poster was me, but the money here went from Oakland to the Mets to cover part of Clippard's salary. :)

Gonsalves is almost a year older. They were directly compared in a BP June chat both 20 at the time but Meisner had just turned 20. Gonsalves now 21. Meisner was said to have more upside and more risk. Both started in low A this year and moved to high A after making significant progress.

I don't think the Twins have a better comp in prospect value.

I would normally overreact and freak out that Ryan did nothing yet again, but I am fine with them not making any moves at this point. I don't think this team makes the playoffs with or without bullpen tweaks and a small catching upgrade.

Only Dozier is potentially having a career year. I'm satisfied with incremental win increases at this point because 2016-2020 should hopefully be our window.

FWIW, Law did a writeup and thought the Mets gave up way too much. Maybe not a terrible plan to try and wait out the market.

And yes, it seems Gonsalves is the right comp. I wouldn't give that up for a bullpen rental.

As far as what the A’s got back, Casey Meisner was my sleeper pitching prospect for the Mets this year, and has indeed had a breakout season in Savannah. He would now rank sixth in the Mets’ system....that doesn't justify giving away someone with the trade value of a Meisner for 20 innings of a reliever

Even if we eventually "lost" we'd probably have to wait 4-5 years in order to tell unless [insert B- prospect here] was flipped for more assets.
