GP830 Verified Member Posted June 1, 2015 Posted June 1, 2015 Meyer Polanco/Gordon/Santana Turner/Pinto -for- Swihart Thoughts??? Also, we'll throw in Deunsing.
Linus Verified Member Posted June 1, 2015 Posted June 1, 2015 I would not do Meyer or Gordon, some combination of the rest I would do. If Pelfrey continues to pitch well, perhaps he could be added to the mix and save a prospect. I like the general premise, which is the Twins have stocked the cupboard nicely with the exception of catching. I believe that the next starting catcher for the Twins is not in the system right now.
nytwinsfan Provisional Member Posted June 1, 2015 Posted June 1, 2015 Why would Boston trade Swihart? It's not like they have a strong backup or another good catcher in the prospect pipeline? The only reason they would trade him to us is if we ridiculously overpaid, which we wouldn't do.
Kirby_waved_at_me Verified Member Posted June 1, 2015 Posted June 1, 2015 I don't think Swihart being wasted in AAA is any better than Pinto being wasted in AAA. This is Suzuki town. I think if the Twins don't want to bring Pinto up this season, he should probably be traded for someone they will actually play.
DuluthFan Verified Member Posted June 1, 2015 Posted June 1, 2015 The Twins drafted 4 catchers in 2013. If they progress normally through the system they should be up about the time Joe Mauer's contract would be up, approximately 2018/2019. The Twins were planning for life after Mauer as a catcher. Unfortunately the concussion happened. They now have Suzuki signed to play until about the same time as Mauer would have.
kab21 Verified Member Posted June 1, 2015 Posted June 1, 2015 Meyer is currently untradeable due to his current issues and injury history. He definitely isn't frontlining a major trade. These kind of trades are unbelievably rare. This isn't even a Garza for Delmon trade where both had played in the majors a little and team needs/surpluses matched up perfectly. Prospect for prospect trades almost never happen especially when the Red Sox starting catcher is Ryan Hanigan. And then making it a multiple prospect trade for a borderline star prospect make it even rarer. Here's the kind of trade that is conceivable. Berrios/Gordon for Lucroy or Sano for Lucroy.

Agreed on Plawecki, or another target is Susac. I'm not against the idea of trading for a catching prospect, and I do think it is (relatively speaking) an organizational weakness, I just think Plawecki and Susac make sense because their teams have alternatives that are as good or better. Interesting question is what the Giants or Mets would want. Giants could use a 3rd Baseman, but I don't want to trade Plouffe or Sano straight up for Susac (although last year I would have traded Plouffe straight up). We would need something more. The Mets could use a shortstop, so huge bummer there about Santana's (and to a lesser extent) Escobar's play. Anyone know what other positions the Giants or Mets could be looking for upgrades at?
DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted June 1, 2015 Posted June 1, 2015 Meyer- His trade value couldn't be any lower, no team is going to give up an asset for him at this point, nor should the Twins even be shopping him at this point.Polanco/Gordon/Santana- Not sure how you group these three together, Santana has no real trade value, Polanco has minimum and Gordon has quite a bit IMHO.Turner/Pinto- Minimal Value-for-Swihart- Boston aren't going to give up on a 21 catcher who is already in the majors and could hit for a .800 OPS in the future. Duensing- Now you are talking.Thoughts??? Also, we'll throw in Deunsing.
zenser Verified Member Posted June 1, 2015 Posted June 1, 2015 Just saying, but it has been rumored many time on MLB trade rumors that Boston won't include him in a trade for Hamels. I get that money and other prospects are involved but why would they even consider guys like Meyer, Gordon, Pinto, Santana....

Polanco has more trade value than Gordon and probably not that close. They are certainly comparable prospects (more upside for Gordon, more floor Polanco) but Polanco is much closer to mlb ready and that makes a huge difference. He could bring a nice piece back himself, Gordon not so much.

Gordon isn't even a year removed from being the 5th pick in the draft and MLB had him as the #33 prospect prior to this season. Gordon would have much more value then Polanco because of his upside. And that's before we even get into pedigree.
Loosey Verified Member Posted June 1, 2015 Posted June 1, 2015 As a team still in the building mode the as Twins are I am against trading multiple prospects for another prospect. To risky in my mind. Swihart may turn into a superstar, but so might Berrios, Sano, Buxton, Gordon, Polanco, etc. As we have seen with many players, Minor league success doesn't alway translate to major league success. If I trade a prospect, I want a proven commodity in return. That's just my own opinion.
Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted June 1, 2015 Posted June 1, 2015 I have to agree that Gordon has more value. Some scouts raved that his defense is so good that he'd be passable in MLB right out of the draft (obviously, not his bat though). Polanco still has questions around him and he's four years older.
blairpaul715 Verified Member Posted June 2, 2015 Posted June 2, 2015 Boston doesnt trade for prospects, they trade prospects for MLB talent.........they have a ton of prospects now, why would they trade for more , especially when catcher is hard to find.
