Phillies open to trade Hamels

Obviously, his salary - 23.5/y for 4 more seasons - makes him unlikely to become a Twin.  Rumors indicate that the Phillies would not expect the Red Sox to kick in top prospect Swihart (#24 on mlb's rankings) so maybe the Phillies are more concerned about lowering payroll anyway they can.  They have some bad contracts on that team.  I think if the Twins wanted to, they could make a pretty nice package out of prospects and cost controlled MLers.

I'd love to see him come to any of the other AL Central teams, especially if the trade drain them from prospects.  He is not consistent (and every other year or so has been a major source of fan frustration - think Nolasco circa 2014) and here is the cherry on top:

8-13, 4.54 ERA, 1.325 WHIP, .812 Opponent OPS

His career numbers against the AL.   I'd love to see him in a Tigers or White Sox uniform.

Nice evaluation based on 29 out of 274 starts.

I don't know if the Swihart nugget is particularly meaningful -- he's the Red Sox top "prospect" now only because Betts and Bogaerts recently graduated from that status.  If the Phillies were still demanding one of those two and not Swihart, that isn't a lowering of demands at all.

This trade talk about Hamels and speculation that the Phillies will need to cut payroll has been going on forever.  Same with Cliff Lee before he got hurt.  I think the Phillies asking price is still quite high (as it should be) and I have my doubts he will be moved.  Certainly not to a team that has zero interest in ace-level FA options anyway (Twins) -- the ultimate cost in prospects + Hamels contract will probably end up similar.

In 6 out of the last 8 seasons he has been a 130+ ERA pitcher.  Who are you looking at?

/ to pile on to this, a repost of my response the last time this "inconsistent" claim was made:

Last five years:

ERA: 3.06, 2.79, 3.05, 3.60, 2.46

IP: 208, 216, 215, 220, 204

FIP: 3.67, 3.05, 3.30, 3.26, 3.07

What sort of inconsistency were you observing?

On the contrary, I think this is the kind of contract Ryan would love to sign a top talent to, if it were in the FA market.  He swallowed hard and gave Nolasco 4 years.  It's the 6+ year contracts that end any discussions before they start, for him.

Giving up significant talent to obtain this contract is the likely deal-breaker for the Twins unless Amaro really is doing a fire-sale.  But I don't see the contract as an issue whatsoever.  Indeed, the present Hamels contract would end just when some of the young arms might start (collectively) to be expensive.

Somebody is going to miss out on the top pitchers this offseason and ante up the prospects for Hamels.  I would without a doubt trade any one of the Twins pitching prospects for Hamels.

This isn't Vance Worley moving to the AL.  Worley's comparable is Dillon Gee.  Hamels is like a better version of Anibal Sanchez.  Instead of getting much worse as predicted he got better when he moved to the AL.
