Seager's Contract

I just saw that the M's gave Kyle Seager 7 years $100 million! He basically posted Brian Dozier numbers at the same age with GG defense at 3B. Is it just me or is that WAY too much for an above average player? The M's seem determined to inflate the market, does this affect Dozier's contract demands?

I think it means a couple things

1) there is a lot more money in baseball than Twins fans typically think.  I'm not saying the Twins should run out and sign Scherzer but they shouldn't claim that they don't have the payroll to keep players when they get out of the arb years anymore.

2) Locking up young guys through the age 32 (or so) season makes a ton of sense.

3) We are really in a pitching/defense era where Seager's offensive numbers are acceptable to get that kind of deal.  Wow.

Do not want to put that type of money into Dozier and think we have enough options to avoid it. Dozier is above average, he is not elite.  Right now 3rd base seems to be a harder position to fill than second.  Avoid overpaying above average players.  Have no problems paying the elite players, several clubs have money issues at this time by overpaying above average players(Cinni, Cleveland, Detroit) for some.  Red Sox had this issue until they traded a bunch of this type of player and now are working on signing only elite players(Haney Rameriz, Pablo Sandavol, John Lester)  That is the correct way to go.

......that's the reality of the world today. Money is going up and up every year.

I obviously am doing something wrong when it comes time for my annual salary review.  I suppose it would help if I did not check TD during work hours.

After three seasons (and some change) in the big leagues, though, it’s probably time to throw that profile out the window. In 2,200 big league plate appearances, Seager has now launched 70 home runs, or an average of 19 longballs per 600 plate appearances. For comparison, Pablo Sandoval has averaged 20 home runs per 600 plate appearances through his career, and has been the focus of a pretty significant bidding war for his services. The market recognizes Sandoval as a significant offensive force, and is paying him as such; given that, we probably have to recognize Seager as a legitimate asset at the plate as well.

For reference, here are their numbers over the last three years:

Kyle Seager  PA 2,000 BB 8% K 18% ISO .172 BABIP .291 Slash .262/.329/.434/.763 wOBA .335 wRC+ 116

Pablo Sandoval  PA 1,664 BB 8% K 13% ISO .144 BABIP .301 Slash .280/.335/.424/.759 wOBA .330 wRC+ 115

Trevor Plouffe  PA 1569 BB 7.9% K 19.9 ISO .173 BABIP .284 Slash .249/.314/.422/.737 wOBA .322 wRC+ .103

Plouffe in 1933 PAs has hit 62 HRs which averages to 23 HRs per 600.

I think the Twins have 1 more year of control for Dozier and has been less consistent then Seager.  I can see a high dollar extension.  but I don't think the Twins are motivated to do anything at this time.  In 2 years they may look at a 5 year 80 million extension if he continues to produce the numbers he did this year but even then that's a lot for this franchise.

If Plouffe can stay healthy for a couple years he will get a big payday as a 3B, not LF.

As a 2b Dozier is not near as valuable as Saeger, though he could get there as long as he works on his defense.

Uggla or Utley, which one will Dozier become as he ages?

If your annual performance review includes phrases like "can not lay off the slider in the dirt," you may have an answer.

I lean Uggla, Utley was the best in the biz for several years, Uggla was a pretty good hitter that could hit some bombs for a 2B, sounds more like Dozier to me
